You can. It is called a contract of employment. If players - and agents - have the benefit of sitting out contracts then Clubs should have the same. Morally do you stand in the way of someone getting such a large wage rise? Probably not. But we're a business and this should have waited until the Summer.

And say then, Done loose's form or gets a bad injury, i know it's all if's and but's, but what's done is done, just get on with the rest of the season and see what pans out.

It would be a different story if he wasn't bagging every game and winning, and we weren't doing shit and losing them all. Just need 3 points to stop the rot

I can't believe the same old tired arguments are being regurgitated as to why the club shouldn't have sold Done.

Either you get the principle of bringing in players to improve them and allow them to move on when they receive an offer that's too good for them - not the club - to turn down, or you don't.

Refuse players permission to leave and the players with ambition will stop coming here.

There's a limit though. Selling him at the end of the season still ticks the boxes of being a club that improves and sells. If you sell at the drop of a hat then you get taken advantage of. It may also make the club look unambitious, which will hardly attract players.

I hope Done gets a hat-trick next week if we get four.

The 1st may happen. The 2nd wont.We will lose to Sheff Utd next Tues I'm afraid. Matt Done will score. Deep down we all know this will happen.

Hardly a drop of a hat, though?

Only a few days before the sale went through, KH was keen to emphasise that no players would be leaving but when it happened, he was quite magnanimous about it, understanding that it was a chance that might not come Done's way again. All this "end of season" stuff is just wishful thinking.

KH himself - the manager who used to implode when we sold players such as Murray and ALF - can see the logic and take the longer-term view.

That's why it's no drop of a hat, because that implies lack of planning and vision. For the first time in our history, that's exactly what we've got. If it makes a few fans disgruntled in the short-term, that's their lookout.

Maybe that contract of employment had a clause that said he could talk to other clubs if certain conditions were met.

I'm sure that's been the case with some of our other sales in recent years.

And you can forget sell on fees. If the Blades go up and he is still banging them in, why would they want to sell one of their top strikers? Unless they offloaded him to the Wendies for a pound down and a penny a week, to help them in their promotion push.

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

Ah! So THAT'S why Hill's been so openly encouraging of our best players being sold to better themselves. I thought it may have something to do with him personally trousering over £100k in the last 8 months as a result. I really should stop being so cynical.

Whilst seeing both sides of the argument,as a thought on how far our club has come in recent years I can remember a time when fans would be because of the quality of player we had at the club hoping and praying that someone would come in and take a player off your hands because they were to a man pretty c**p in comparison to the current squad

Whether he gets 0.1% of the deal or all the lot, it is never solely Keith Hill's decision to sell a player, so the cynicism is wasted.

Whether we care to admit it or not, Matt Done has bettered himself both professionally and financially by moving to Bramall Lane.

He's moved on and so should we.

I wouldn't. He is in scorching form and any "gentleman's agreement" will be negated by Nigel Clough being a prize nob! Unless such an agreement was made at a higher level I can't see any way he won't line up against us

Why? Alf did, Lambert did and both scored goals to help beat us. They are going for promotion and he's just won them their last 2 games.

Tutte never played last season against us. (not that we'd be particularly worried about him). I know that was a Hill and Flicker thing, but gut feeling says that Clough will honour the same agreement with Hill. Could be wrong.

I am sick to death already of that figure £450k being spouted about. I agree 442, that unless someone can prove it then it is meaningless, yet it seems to be "gospel". If it was that figure then I am sure most would agree it was too low in the circumstances when we didn't have to sell and we needed him for our pop at the Championship. If it was agreed to keep it "undisclosed" then we can't really say any more, but it leaves many frustrated. But in principle the club should reveal the guaranteed sum. We know there are add-ons to that sum which then makes it an "undisclosed" fee ie. one you can't say what the final figure will be. If the guaranteed fee is "low" in most peoples eyes ,being very subjective, then the club would want to keep shut.

I just wish the club would reveal all so that we can make our own minds up, hopefully making us feel a little better, but it won't happen.

You can be as sick as you want pal, but I bet its around that figure and not the stupid astonomical figures that some deluded mongs ascertain too!
We gave this player away......and had no contingency to cover his release.
