Welcome To Nigel Adkins Monday, 13th Sep 2010 08:39 Saints have at last appointed a new manager. The arguments will mabe rage for a few weeks yet as to why it took so long to bring Adkins to the Club and the chaos that surrounded the whole sorry situation, but in the meantime he now has to step in and get off to a flying start. Promotion is still very much on the cards, however Saints dont have too much time to play with if they are to get themselves into the race. So is Nigel Adkins the right man for the job ? I would say that dream appointments in the vein of Martin O'Neill apart he is as qualified to take ths football club up than any of the other candidates mentioned. He has of course done it before not once but twice with Scunthorpe and his sides have a reputation for open attacking football so from that point of view he has all the qualifications needed, when you add to the equation his ability to bring through youngsters. The only worry is that this is a completely different scenario than he is used to at Scunthorpe, although he had a spell as player manager with Bangor City in Wales, after he left them he became Scunthorpes physio and held that position for a number of years before being promoted to first team boss in 2006, it was a brave appointment at the time, although he was taking over a side that was already heading for promotion but he repaid that by keeping the team on course and taking the iron up. The following season they went straight back down, but they earned a reputation for playing the game in the right manner and the following season came straight back up again and last term he achieved what many considered a very hard task, by keeping them there, it was onoly a matter of time before a bigger club with respect to Scunthorpe came calling. The onle reservations that Saints fans may have will be his ability to work with higher profile players, after all at Scunthorpe he took them to promotion last time with the on loan Joseph Mills a regular in his team, whilst that has to be something to praise him for, it shows the type of player that he has had to work with, whilst now he will have to deal with big egos as well as different sets of problems, a wide selection choice being one of them. But if he can make the transition to dealing with our squad of superstars, well in League 1 terms anyway, then he could be a great success here, returning to his one connection with the Club Joseph Mills, it would be fair to say Mills is much maligned by Saints supporters, his problem is he was seen as one of Rupert Lowe's youth experiments under Jan Poortvliet and because of this the supporters have never given him a fair crack of the whip, however if Adkins could turn him one into a player capable of getting a team out of League 1 then he can surely do it again nad this has to be good for the squad as at the moment too many of them are not playing to their potential and a clean slate can only be good for them. So good luck to Nigel Adkins, its getting to the point where we change manager so often I should have a template story where i just need to change the name, lets hope that this apointment is different.
