Southampton Linked With Another Raid On Rangers
Friday, 23rd Dec 2022 08:57

Just as one rumour emerges of a Saints raid on one half of the Old Firm it appears that we are busy bee's in Glasgow and we are also looking at a player who plies his trade with Celtic's Auld Enemy Rangers.

If we don't land one winger from Glasgow in Liel Abada from Celtic, we may get another in Ryan Kent from Rangers.

Kent who joined the Gers from Liverpool in 2019 for around £6 million is entering the last 6 months of his contract and could be available at a cut price cost.

The 25 year old is valued at around £15 million, but with his deal expiring in the summer of 2023, Rangers might have to cut their losses and accept a lower fee.

Saints of course have signed Steven Davis from Rangers and also at the start of this season Joe Aribo.

He has considerable experience having played for Coventry, Barnsley, SC Frieburg and Bristol Rovers before joining Rangers in the summer of 2019 after spending the previous season on loan.

So will Saints go for either winger and if so who would represent the best chance of success in the Premier League.

Abada has youth on his side, but lacks experience outside of the SPL, so is more about potential, he also has a better scoring ratio than Kent, but the Rangers man has more assists.

We won't be playing 5 at the back then! Not with 6 wingers on the pitch!!!

I suppose you could call Mbappé a winger of sorts. Maybe we should go for him to complete our collection!

Difficult to make comparisons, but you have made a good case for both of them (Nick).
Of course stats. only show part of the picture and many players contribute more to a team than merely getting on the scoresheet.
Clearly we need an improvement " up top " and those of us who are "a bit longer in the tooth", long to see the next Beattie, Lambert or Pelle to appear on the scene. Someone with some extra height, and weight who knows which way are kicking after HT. Since Ings left we have been dependent on Ché Adams' occasional bursts of form, but we've lacked a " big goalscorer " to brag about for the last 3-4 seasons, and for all their efforts; Elyounoussi and Adam A. haven't found the net so regularly either.

For all their potential and/or ability both these guys may get good reviews but we still lack " someone " to be in the box at the right time - and complete the job properly.

Players who do well for Rangers and Celtic, fair enough.
But...is the Scottish Premier league of a similar standard to the English Premier league or more akin to the Championship?
