This whole thing stinks of Cowling and his obsession with the youth team. I'm delighted he is investing so heavily but he is also very short sited in my opinion. Humes is ideal for Cowling as he knows the youth team players and will be delighted to play them no matter what as they are his kids. I have no problem with kids, but are they what we need at the moment? Plus Joe was giving them plenty of playing time. If you replace JD replace him with someone who has experience don't always take the "we'll promote you on the same money as now and if you keep us up I'll give you a pay rise" bullsh!t. This whole thing is a total and utter disgrace and Cowling has gone to far. Yes its his money, but this is not a recuitment company where you can keep promoting the office administrator and hope they come good as the HR manager. FFS Cowling I'm furious absolutely furious. Time to begin a self imposed exile! PS I wish Humes all the best |

I'm sorry but I totally disagree with you regarding this statement "There is little wrong with Joe Dunne's tactics" I could not fathom out our formation on Saturday. We normally play with width but there was none. When he made the triple substitution he should have changed the formation back to what we have been playing. I rate Marcus Bean but he is no way a man to play out wide. But then again I'm pretty sure he wanted the full backs to fill the gaps on the wings, but it just didn't work. |

How many times have we complained about missing signing a lower league player that was on our door step? I'm pleased we've done this, and hopefully the punt will pay off. Does this mean the summer signings have now finished? |
| Forum Reply | How many games in your lifetime? at 09:26 4 Jul 2014
For some reason I can't quite you Daniel but this statement intrigues me, especially the fact you state "I've barely missed a home league game". You've always maintained you've never missed a home league game. Play-off semi finals? But in answer to your question I've worked out that its circa 385 league games, circa 50 cup games, circa 140 away games and circa 20 ground hopping games. To be honest the majority have been painful to watch! |
| Forum Thread | Vacant Positions at 11:36 24 Jun 2014
With Cousins heading off to pastures new this got me thinking about the vacant positions we currently have. I think the list is currently RB LB GK - reserve CB - reserve (as we've no idea if Josh Sick Note will be offered a deal) ST - reserve I can see where a couple of youth players could step up. But I'm not yet sure Tosin is the man to be first choice RB and of course we also need backup to the 1st choice LB! I also think Bonne could well be the man to be the back up striker to Jabo. As the budget has been cut, what do we think? Will JD throw the youngsters into the melting pot or is there enough cash in the coffers to make some senior signings? I know we're 'waiting on players' but this is a line I have head countless times of the seasons. The other thing concerns me is injuries, with all these positions needing injuries it doesn't leave much scope if we're hit like we were last year. DRS |

I think there are a number of players that Lambert never gave a game to who proved him wrong. Loved all by all except Lambert was Johnny Jackson who rightly plays in the championshp. I can also think of Boothroyd not fancying David Fox who went on to play in the premier league but never got a game for us in his second season. I liked these players but the managers didn't, which was a shame and I'm glad they proved them both wrong. Thinking of another, Perkins. Never really rated him that highly and he went on to play in the championship after we let him leave. |

At the start of the season he looked like a decent player. By the end of the season I thought he was dredful. Not disappointed in the slightest that he has left. |

I have no idea how long he has left on his current contract in Greece. I do know that it is not a question of money for him, he just wants to come back and play a couple of seasons here. |

A friend of mine who has been very close with Lua Lua for a long time has told me he intends to come back to Colchester this summer. He has maintained for a long time that he wants to finish his career at colu and it seems as though that may be happening this summer. I'm not sure whether he's still got it, but if he has a fraction of what he did have I'd be very excited to see him back in a colu shirt! |

Have to say, its great to have these pieces back. Enjoy reading what happened to our former players. Shall we start a list of players that we would like to know where they ended up? I recently saw Perry Groves in Twisters absolutely smashed, he must still be looking for a bar to buy in town and will invite Steve Whitton along! |

It's funny how we all see a different game. I thought he was always caught out of position, had no first touch, no final ball, couldn't really tackle and there was always a mistake in him and some games where he looked positively non-league! I'm thinking of Southend away one year in particular... He was a cult hero as he was an absolute beast and had the strength of an ox, but honestly I couldn't believe our luck when some PAID MONEY for him! In Sears we have a 20 goal a season man, but only if he is given the chance to play upfront alongside Jabo. Unfortunately I'm not sure this will be the case. Oh to play 4-4-2! |

Elokobi has to be one of the worst players I've ever seen wear a col utd shirt, heaven knows how he managed to play at a higher level. I'm not sure we'll have the budget to bring in any one new. We need a front man but then again so does every club, the chances are they have a bigger budget than us! |

I have to say Wessex that I disagree a little with your comment about John Ward and Col U. I actually thought he did quite a good job. However, when I say did a good job I'm measuring him in that context with the style of football he brought to the club. Before Ward came along the football was dreadful, absolutely terrible. But John Ward to his credit changed the system and also started to get us to play football. I used to like watching the football that John Ward played, apart from the season he departed obviously. I didn't think he was a bad manager at all for us. |

Terrible idea. I've no idea why they think it would be a good idea to combine the conference and L2 in order to bump up where these teams would play. We've been a club that has benefited from loan players in the past, as has any other lower league team. We would kiss goodbye to finding any loan talent if this comes into force. |

This is a real shame. A right back who wouldn't let you down, and who was clearly missed in some of the games at home i.e Tranmere. Not sure who'll we'll get in, but I just hope that Tosin isn't seen as the replacement as he is not a RB in my eyes. A player with talent, but not a RB. |

Seems like a nice bloke, but good riddance I say. I'll never forget when we were playing away to Doncaster or someone like that, when at half time he came into the concourse to say hello to his wife and kids! What sort of pro footballer does that? Clearly he wasn't interested. He had a great career that relied on pace. Unfortunately by the time he got to us he had the turning circle of an oil tanker and the pace of an old cart horse. How he thinks he'll play for another 2 or 3 seasons is beyond me. Perhaps he'll end up at Witham Town or a similar level. |
| Forum Thread | Cowling, The Budget and Youth at 19:23 29 Apr 2014
I've just seen an article on the BBC about an interview RC gave to late kick off. Personally there were a few things in that interview that surprised. It came across that RC wouldn't have been to bothered if we'd have been relegated. He states it would be bad but nothing too much to worry about. Personally as a fan, I'm not sure I'm too happy with being relegated and watching my team play in a lower division. But what I find most surprising by this is how for years Cowling has been banging the drum that not enough people go and watch Colchester. I'm not sure playing in a lower division would do much to ease his moaning. I was also gobsmacked when I saw that the youth development budget is £1M! Wow, this to me seems like a serious sum of money. I think it is fantastic that such investment is being made, but is this too much of a gamble? The playing budget is being cut again for next season, so we're bound to be a struggling league 1 team next season. Will top young talent want to come and join us? The facilities and academy may be very good, but surely the first team has to show some ambition? The other thing that strikes me is that this does seem like a gamble. He hints how top talent can be pinched away for nothing based on our current status, which is a very valid point. But is this what Cowling is after? Is he trying to pump so much money in to the youth development budget that eventually we will grow a huge talent that can be sold for big bucks like a Southampton? This seems the case to me, but it also seems like a huge gamble. At the end of the day its not my money, but I'm not sure its one I would take. I'm not being negative about the fact we're developing youth, I think it is great. But I also think it is such a massive gamble. These players need to be good enough to play in our 1st team to ensure league 1 survival and the only way we'll know is by playing them. Some have done great and show enormous potential (Gilbey, Wright & Bonne) while there are others I'm not just sure on. In my eyes this is a big gamble and I just hope RC gets it right. |

I find it interesting how former managers are interested in him, yet he rarely plays for us. I know he had a bad injury, but if he's never going to play for us then let's take the money and get in Kevin Watson MKII |
