Alas I’m not a regular TVOS reader (or perhaps I’d read this and forgotten- an age thing). And I agree it’s a well written and informative piece. Nonetheless it does not detract from the interview the other night and hearing first hand Billy’s account. |

You would have to be at least 60 years old to have any knowledge of Billy’s “penalty winning ability” which was on a par with Francis Lee’s. My impression was that Billy fully relished that interview as did I. Well done I say for letting us see it. |

Disagree totally. I’ve waited 50 years to find out why Rudd left. That interview was the one of the best and most revealing I’ve heard in that time, and that, surely, is the aim of an interview. Also it would have been most remiss of the interviewer not mention the remarkable fact that Billy played in every Rochdale game from making his debut to leaving. |

Memorable though the goal against Coventry was, when I hear his name I instantly think of his 30 yarder that flew in off the inside of the post at the Pearl St. end in the promotion encounter against Halifax near the end of the season in front of 13,000 plus. He scored 16 goals from left wing that in 68/69 - a remarkable record. He was a decent cricketer too and had a season with Rochdale. |

Plus Man Utd v Man City after. A great afternoon for all football lovers in prospect. For those unsure, you may know Rochdale Sports Club as Rochdale Cricket Club. |

Yes. They played in maroon and white shirts with short sleeves. It was freezing and not a pair of gloves in sight - other than the keepers')! I seem to remember that Colin Whitaker went to Oldham in exchange for Peter Phoenix. I'm not sure that there was any money involved. |

Not forgetting Rochdale CC qualifying for the top division of the Lancashire League in a must win game on the final day of the season. |

I also remember him resisting a total shelling at Burnley on the day we won with 9 men. It is impossible to imagine a better keeping display than that. |

I remember the day clearly. It was a Friday afternoon in June in the days before Radio 5 Live and Radio 2 had regular sports news bulletins on the half hour. The announcer began the 2,30 bulletin with the words, ''and news from the Football League Meeting at.... Rochdale have been re-elected to the Football League'. The voting system allowed 1st and 2nd Division Clubs a vote each. 3rd and 4th Division clubs each had 4 votes between them. As has been mentioned 2 clubs failed to vote. Luton failed to turn up in time but in Grimsby's case it was because, having been promoted from the 3rd division at the end of the season, they didn't realise that they now had an individual vote. Altrincham reckoned that both clubs had said they would support them, but who knows? Bob Stokoe actually did us few favours in the build up to the meeting, claiming that Rochdale was unmanageable. |

The original lights consisted of 3 rows of 5 on 2 telegraph poles in each corner of the ground. Later in the mid sixties, I think a couple of spotlights were put on single poles behind each goal. It looks like you can just see the top of one of these at the Pearl St end. If so, I reckon this would discount 1965. |

And the FA Cup Final. Extra time and penalties meant that Sky went straight to Wembley almost immediately Ben Muirhead's pen hit the net. |

I remember the game. The shirts were red with narrow white stripes, similar to an away shirt worn by Man City later in the decade. The shirts were also short sleeved and as you can see from the picture the pitch was snowbound and it was perishingly cold. Wisely, our men wore their usual white shirts under the red ones and the sleeves from these are what you can see. It was the winter of 'The Big Freeze', lasting from Boxing Day until early March and I would guess that no more than 6 or 8 games across the country took place that day. Biffos won 5-1, I recall, after a goalless first half. I reckon the Dale player in the picture is Ronnie Cairns. |

This is exactly what is happening. The manager wants to use the lacrosse pitches and he insists that they are maintained to the standard he requires. The Football Club is not charged any rent but in exchange for using them (quite often, as it happens) they maintain them. The alternative for the club would probably involve travelling and a lot more expense. I guess that a van for the groundsman would be useful for him for transporting any equipment and thus would benefit the Football Club |
