I met Jamie Mackie two years ago in Sorrento, just after he’d retired. He spent ages chatting to me even though I’d approached him to wish him good luck whilst he was having lunch with his wife and another couple. His mate was an also ex-pro, who looked familiar but I have no idea who he was and didn’t want to ask! He was pleasant too. Mackie was a top, top guy and sent a couple of bottles of Peroni over to my table for me and my other half which was much needed in that heat! It was clear that Rangers meant a lot to him. My other half was a bit annoyed if left her handbag unattended at the table whilst I went and sat with them though! |

I think Jon Dahl Tomasson would be a great appointment for us. He’s played in some great teams with legends of the game in Italy (he won the league, cup and champions League with AC Milan), Germany, Spain, Holland (winning trophies there too) and a very brief spell with Newcastle United, which although didn’t go well, he was only 18 years old at the time and to be fair Newcastle were in a bit of a state! I think he may have been Les Ferdinand’s replacement or bought with the Les’s transfer fee when he went to Tottenham. He’s been managed by some good managers himself at those clubs. Wikipedia, although not always accurate, says he won some youth awards when playing in Holland so he knows what it takes to establish himself at a young age. I would have thought he’d be the ideal person for a young player to learn from. As a coach / manager, he’s got Champions League experience with Malmo and has won the Swedish League with them after a period where they hadn’t won it in a few seasons. Look at what Graham Potter has done after coming from the a successful period in Sweden... I was listening to a podcast today where Tomasson was interviewed by a European football journalist called Graham Hunter and he comes across really well, full of energy, ambitious, adaptable and youth-focused (which is the route we’re taking as a club according to Nedum Onouha). Of note, he talked about the mentality of young players abroad and how they question everything and how he’s dealt with that as a manager - football in England seems to be going down this route too. He’s probably of an age where both younger players and those with experience will know who he is and will probably have good links to the European market. He speaks a few languages which I would have thought is important when trying to get players in from abroad. He was interested in the Hibs manager’s job before Lee Johnson was appointed yesterday so surely he’d come to us! The only thing is having listened to that podcast, I don’t see him being easily controlled by Les - something that might not work in his favour… |

Good morning guys, first time poster here. I’ve been a long-term reader and although haven’t posted before, I wanted to share this. I’m on holiday at the moment in Sorrento and on our first day here, we settle down at a bar on the beach. I look to my left and I see who I thought, looked like Jamie Mackie, with his wife and another couple, clinking glasses, a few tables away. I wouldn’t usually bother someone famous or recognisable but he’s a Rangers legend and has just retired, so I wanted to at least wish him well. Either that, or I’d be embarrassing myself in front of a few strangers. Turns out, there really is only one Jamie Mackie and I ended up having a 20 minute chat with him about all things Rangers and his plans for the future. I went back to my table where a few minutes later, the waitress brought over two beers, pointed at his table and said it was from them. I looked over at his table to nod and mouth a thanks and he’s already looking across with a thumbs up. Before I left, I went over again to say thanks (for the beers and for his services to Rangers) and ended up chatting for another 10 minutes. He couldn’t have been more friendly and genuine and seemed touched by the fact I’d come over. I didn’t ask anything controversial about his time at the club but he mentioned that he’s still good friends with Barton, Derry, Taarabt, Hill, Hall and Helguson. He also said Taarabt was a nutcase (which we all knew!) I mentioned that I was a season ticket holder and asked if he would come back to Rangers in some capacity and he said that now that he’s retired he’ll be there every week watching the team and that out of all the clubs he played for, Rangers mean the most to him. His friends and wife were also very welcoming and talkative. His mate was also an ex-pro called Jamal - he used to play for Crystal Palace and Swansea (where he played with Angel Rangel) and now looks after a couple of Rangers players, I presume, as an agent. I might be coming across as a bit of a “fanboy” with this post but at a time like this where the news seems to be about negative stories, I thought I’d share a positive one. |
