Next 4 games
at 13:50 25 Dec 2023

Home and away against Fylde who are second bottom, then Home against Kiddie who are bottom and home again against mid table Wealdstone after a 2 week rest

Not much danger of us finishing in the bottom 4 so this is a golden opportunity to build some momentum for a run at the play - offs. I know there are no guaranteed wins, but you can’t ask for a better run of fixtures. Should be targeting 8-10 points from those games.

women's rugby World Cup final
at 08:33 12 Nov 2022

England women lost by just 3 points after being down to 14 due to a red card after just 18 minutes. They had won their previous 30 games but unfortunately that card was the difference as they were 14-0 up at the time

Very enjoyable game not short of effort skill and some strong tackling. At the whistle England had a line out just 5 meters out & lost it

They are going to be gutted with that loss, but a great performance with only 14 players for most of the game

Obviously turned into an absolute disaster but if it had come off teams like the Dale would have seen less money & it would have potentially seen the end of lower level football leagues ( or seen them become part time)

For anyone interested this is the first episode of a 3 part podcast to discuss it. Part 2 on Wednesday & the last episode will be a couple of days after

Lions Tour
at 20:39 23 Jul 2021

A second rugby related post

Although there won't be any fans there which is a great pity, I am really looking forward to the game tomorrow. Would have the lions as marginal favourites on paper because of SAs lack of games, but the Boks will step it up for sure. Looks like the Lions might try to play an expansive game, & SA will stick with their proven method of several decades, & try to muscle us out of it.

Close series to call but I think we have to win tomorrow because I think the Boks will get better each game

Frank Worthington Passes Away

Not COVID related, passed away after a long illness

A great entertainer who loved football. Isn't mentioned on the BBC site, but just to keep playing, he continued to drop down leagues & i think even played for a few non league teams into his 40's

Unfortunately played at a time where being a skillful entertaining player almost guaranteed you would get less England caps

Easy Fundraising site

Probably should have posted this a long time ago but does anyone else seem to have a problem with the site. For almost 2 years, it doesn't seem to give the donation, even when it clearly seems to have kicked in. Says I have hardly donated anything for 2 years. I deleted & reloaded but still nothing. A pity because when I did my year backpacking just before COVID I put over 10,000 GBP through bookings.com and flights that qualified ( Bookings .com offer 3 or 4%). Probably over 400GBP lost

Love him or hate him, reaching a world record of 770 "proper goals" is really astonishing in today's football. Gives Trump a run for his money on Narcissism, but you cant deny what he has done on the pitch across multiple top leagues & Portugal

Hagler passes away
at 04:40 14 Mar 2021

Died age 66. One of the best & most exciting to watch. When he was around with Hearns, Leonard & Duran were around it was a golden time for Middleweight boxing. Hearns was my favourite but Hagler sparked him out in 3 rounds when looking like being knocked out himself. Think he first got the title by beating our own Minter although could be imagining it

RIP one of the best

Football to return 29th March
at 13:49 22 Feb 2021

Full details not yet revealed but it would be just in time for the Easter games

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/56151863

Ipswich, Accie, Blackpool & Doncaster the 4 home games + 5 away assuming no more postponements

A 4 match ticket book might not be a bad way to try to get things moving if all this goes ahead ?

Next 8 Games
at 08:25 27 Jan 2021

Between now and the end of February ( Based on this boards fixture list) we have 8 games, 4 at home & 4 away

7 of the 8 teams are in the bottom half, with Charlton at home the only exception. March is a very tough month where we play the top 3 & Sunderland so we could be at a make or break period now as we either gain or lose ground with teams around us. Although it has been said before, IMO we need

1. Continue the attacking intent but whoever is in defence needs to get back to basics especially if we are leading ( those last gasp goals in the last 30 seconds of our last 2 games were entirely manageable). Nothing wrong with row Z or their corner flag at times

2. 2 players needed if possible, LB & Tough midfielder.

3. I don't believe in bringing in players we have to pay for just to cover a month of injuries as we will end up paying to have players to sit on the bench. Also as shown under the last 2 years of Hill, spending more doesn't guarantee a higher finish. However we should really be tapping the loan market as we have a track record of giving loanees some game time

4. As a result of my view on point 3, we have to hope for a spell of good luck regarding injuries. All clubs get them but it seems to be our entire attack or entire defence. Just as our attack gets going every experienced/tough CH is out. Earlier every forward seemed to be out I think we have the players to both defend and attack, they are just not on the pitch at the same time

I'm still optimistic of survival, but that is based on injured players starting to come back ( or some loans/signings). Less than 12 points in the next 8 games will have me changing that view

india all out for 36
at 11:09 19 Dec 2020

They actually had a first innings lead, with the headline yesterday talking about building a substantial total today. The second worse score since the 2nd world war. Not a single player made it to double figures. Aussies knocked the total off to win comfortably by 9 wickets

Meant to be a game between numbers 1 & 2 in the world championship, & both still likely to qualify for the final, but that's a demoralizing loss for India

watching live sport
at 16:01 13 Dec 2020

I'm overseas at the moment and today went to watch a cricket match, the first live sport I've seen since early February. Actually felt strange at first but it was brilliant just sat outside on a terrace with a beer in hand watching a 45 over a side match. Whenever the first Dale game is open I can guarantee it will feel different and will be memorable after such a long time for anyone who attends. Gutted I won't be there but Hopefully a lot of people on this board will enjoy that first experience after such a long time whatever the result. With a bit of luck it will be the Gillingham game so I'll enjoy seeing you all on I-follow. Can't wait to see fans in the ground

NFL also starts this week
at 08:35 13 Sep 2020

For those that are interested, the NFL starts this week ( The Chiefs won the Thursday night opener). I'm predicting an 8-8 season for my team the Browns & reckon this is the season where Mayfield proves he is not just all hype, or shows he's not a genuine starter. Needs to focus on the game rather than earning money from adverts and shooting his mouth off as though he's the biggest star in the game. I fear he will show he's not what he was cracked up to be

KC looked very good in their opener with the new running back ( Edwards-Helaire) already adding to an amazing team. Baring injuries it's hard to see past them for the Super Bowl although anything can happen once it reaches the knockout/play off stages

Will the Ravens get stronger? Who else will challenge? Should be a good season. Interesting that 6 teams are allowing fans ( 22% of capacity allowed) & the rest will start in empty stadia. Wonder if any fan asked to put his mask on will brandish a gun and defend his rights not to !!! I also wonder what name the Washington team will choose ( unless it's already happened)

No FA cup replays next year
at 12:27 13 Aug 2020

Interesting decision. Small clubs holding big teams to a draw will lose out on a money spinning replay ( Spurs & Newcastle for us recently). Probably the right decision but I imagine some premier teams may argue for it to be permanent due to the large number of fixtures they already have.

Prize money also been halved which is another blow for smaller clubs, hopefully only for 1 season

Dave Greenfield passed away
at 19:06 4 May 2020

One for the older punk lovers of this board, but the Strangers were one of my all time favorites. Dave Greenfield was the keyboard player which was unusual for a punk band but made them stand out from the crowd. Some brilliant solos, especially in No More Heroe, but many more. Saw them a few times including the Nice & Sleazy tour which was "quite innovative" for the time

I think it was 1977 that my mum asked me what album I wanted for Christmas and I asked for Rattus Norvegicus. I ended up getting Abba because my mum reckoned a band with a name like that couldn't be good & wasn't Abba so much nicer !!

I know he has been mentioned on another thread, but I reckon he's worth one of his own. Just passed 18m GBP, with 6m raised in the last 24 hours. Also not just the money, but when he is interviewed what a thoroughly nice man, bringing a genuine spirit lifting mood. Sharp as a tack too for a 99 year old

Not usually one for awards, gongs etc but if ever someone deserved some recognition, this guy is it. Would be great to get something on his 100th birthday ( at the end of the month?)

PS4
at 19:15 7 Apr 2020

Like many of us I'm getting very bored stuck at home & my daughter ( who lives in Norway) suggests I get a PS4 so I can play some of the games against her. They seem quite expensive new & I am sure I would only use a handful of games ( I think super Mario on the little Nintendo handset was the last time I was any good at any of these). The one she is suggesting I start with is Fortnight. Anyone who is into gaming may be able to advise me on:-

1) There seem to be some on E-Bay second hand for about 150 - 200 quid with 1 or 2 handsets. Are these high risk & do PS4s break down after a few years.

2) Can you play a specific game against specific people in another country & do both people have to buy the game

3) Is weekend easy? I imagine if it has levels then after a week I'll still be on level 1

4) Any other games to recommend for 1 or 2 players. I usually like those where there are a few levels and an end point ( like Super Mario but I couldn't see it on PS4.). I also don't mind things like a race ( car, bike etc) where it has laps & a finish line, A game where you use as few of the buttons as possible would suit me best. I'm not interested in buying accessories e.g a gun or steering wheel

Basically assume I know nothing & won't get much better!!

Cheers

Books to read
at 21:20 5 Apr 2020

Someone already started a thread on films, Netflix etc. I am trying to mix up my time between watching TV & Reading. I usually buy detective novels but only so many you can read. I have just bought on Kindle my first spy novels ( all 8 of the George Smiley Novels by John Le Carre). Just read the first one and it seems OK

I was going to buy the 150 years Wisden anthology ( came out 7 years ago). However it is 45 quid, so I was wondering if anyone has bought it and what they think/ Any other good books people might want to suggest for each other?

By the way thanks for whoever recommended Narcos. I had never even heard of it but I just subscribed to Netflix and am really enjoying it. I did the Escobar & City tour last year in Medallin so it's good to see a few of the areas & some of the storylines I saw there
