A sad indictment on what the Premieship has become.
Saints seemed to set their stool out to not loose too badly. A number player who represent the city (but would not have even heard of it before they signed) and who get payed more than twice the national average wage every week stood an watched while the majority of people in atrtendance sat and watched even more highly played players run rings round them.
The referee booked 6 saints players despite virtually no physicality to ensure that the more highly valued assest where protected.

I though the ref got both pen decisions right. He (in retrospect) didn't but I'm getting sick of "there was contact" therefore it was a pen. What has become of the game!
At the other end, if that was hand ball we will have to take charging the ball down out of the game as well as tackling.
Actually suspend players that "go looking for a pen" and sort out the shambles of the offside rule and we might have a decent game once more! |

Match didn't really get started did it.
I genuinely think that we would have performed better without Jan Bednarek. I'm not saying another player...basically we would have been better if he got sent off and we where playing with 10 men. There is obviously a chance that he will develop, but on that showing we have just thrown £6m (plus wages) down the drain
McQueen had a good go, Austin ran around a lot and It was sad but encouraging to see Stephens as frustrated with our negativity as everyone else.

"It’s not a penalty for me, Bobby Madley’s gone looking for trouble in the last minute and he’s found it and to add insult to injury he’s booked Fonte for the incident too.
It’s just a really soft penalty to give and Southampton also have every right to feel aggrieved that they weren’t awarded a foul on Shane Long just before the penalty was given. The other issue is Laurent Koscielny was lying on the floor for a long period before the decision, referees aren’t doctors and you could say Madley should have stopped the game to allow Koscielny to receive treatment on the pitch." |

Stand out players for me where Soares and Long, Yoshida had a good game but I still didn't feel confident that he was on the same wave length as the rest of the team. I thought VW was playing badly before he was sent off, Romeu looks a lot better IMO. However Payet was a cheat in my view, conning the ref is cheating in my book and if i could have 3 football wishes at the top would be retrospective reviews to ensure that cheating receives a ban of some kind |

Unsure about Caulker, got a good goal looked a threat and seemed solid. But kep t launching the ball forward. I hope that wasnt his instructions and that he can develope into a player that can make and recieve a simple pass. If he can he willbe class if not he will limit the rest of the team.
Sadio Mané, Oriol Romeu looked class and I have rated Yoshida quite highly because he was out of possition but very solid. He has a good understanding with Fonte and nothing looked like troubling the pair of them down the right. He was completly toothless going forward, but then he IS a CB
