As someone who doesn't really follow football finances, can I ask why it is that we have so little money? There are 21 professional teams in our division, and we have the 6th highest average attendance. Obviously ticket prices vary, but I imagine we are top 10 in terms of gate receipts. We receive parachute payments this season, and (based on our small squad size) have reduced the wage budget a lot. So what's the big difference between us and someone like Gateshead, off the pitch? Are our L2 players like EEL and Hendo earning so much that the parachute payments don't cover them? Do the other professional clubs (especially those with smaller fanbases) have rich owners subsidising them? I've seen the odd comment suggesting we may need to drop down a division to be sustainable, and I'm trying to understand why that is. Apologies if this has been asked and answered before. |

It seems to be the exact same issues every week. Faffing around at the back. Individual errors. A complete inability to defend set pieces and crosses in general. It's even the same players making errors most of the time! Surely something has to change? I'm not sure what we can afford, but if nothing changes then we're certs to go down. |

There's an interview with Matheson's dad here, which suggests Luke will be staying here at least for the short term: https://www.pinkun.com/norwich-city/rochdale-defender-is-a-norwich-city-fan-1-63 Pasting the key parts here: "If you can plan Luke's career then he'd stay two years at Rochdale, then - hindsight's a wonderful thing isn't it - then, yeah, you'd love him to play for Norwich in the Premier League. "But it's whether it's the right move at the right time, you can't plan, and Rochdale fans obviously want him to stay here and they will want him to stay for the next 10 years because that's their club. "But that would be great if he turned out for Norwich, having never been there, but whether that's the right move one day then who knows? It's who else comes knocking isn't it - Real Madrid, Barcelona, you never know?!" [Post edited 27 Oct 2019 20:05]

| Forum Thread | Rochdale Academy - Who is Next? at 12:24 13 Sep 2019
Whilst it wasn't the greatest Rochdale performance I've ever seen, the Man City U21 game did at least give us a chance to see some of the academy lads play. It's fair to say that Matheson and Morley have established themselves as first team regulars at this point, but any thoughts on who will be the next to establish themselves? I think we have five academy products on pro contracts but yet to break into the team: Brad Wade, Matty Gillam, Fabio Tavares, Harrison Hopper and Lewis Bradley. There are also the younger players to consider, such as Phillips, Clarkson and Thomas. Wade is currently on loan at Barrow, and is unlikely to see first team football this season. Gillam has had chances in the first team but has struggled, and at 21 you'd imagine that this could be his last season to break through. I thought Tavares looked skilful Vs City if a touch lightweight, whilst Hopper and Bradley showed some neat touches but struggled to really impose themselves on the game (which is to be expected at their age). I think there's a fair chance of Tavares or Gillam getting some league football off the bench this season, as we seem a bit short on attacking depth. I'm just curious about which academy players other fans believe could be the next off our production belt, particularly the opinions of those who follow the academy closely. |
