Peter who ....... ?

For those who don't know who Judge Peter Murphy is:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24119519

Yes, I am about to open a can of controversy, discussion & racist abuse.

As a practicing Muslim, I believe I have just about as much right as anyone else to comment on this issue, as if it doesn't already affect us, it soon will.
I am extremely grateful to this country for accepting our asylum back in 1980, as surely today none of my family would still be alive today otherwise. But, I also understand that although some parts of my culture are welcomed here, not all are. Nor should they be. I am grateful that I can eat Halal meat freely, as well as serving it freely in my restaurant. I don't expect that there is only Halal meat sold here and accept that some establishments will sell meats that I cannot eat, such as pig meat. This is fine, i don't eat there and don't tell you not to eat there.
Just as I am allowed to pray daily as I wish, celebrate my religion & its festivals freely without too much trouble generally. Occasionally, I have seen graffiti or heard racist comments made, but I tend to ignore these.
And my children can choose to have school lunches including vegetarian, Halal or just take their own food in without having to eat food that they don't want to.
Just as my wife and other female members of my family can choose to dress at they like including wearing jeans, high heels & a head or face covering. But this also means that if there are places that we go where head-wear including the nijab cannot be worn, then either she wouldn't wear one or we wouldn't go. Just to be clear, I don't ask or demand any fashion wear from my wife at all, but I know some Muslim men who do. The idea that any religion, including Islam, can be above the Civil Laws of the country, are crazy to me. Maybe in other countries (Saudi, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc), the laws are different, but we live in England and have to follow English laws. So if the law says that a woman cannot wear a nijab in court, then she must obey this. And it is a good thing that finally a judge has got the spine & balls to come out & say so, instead of making the majority conform to the minority. We should all celebrate all the festivals of this country, and not cancel Christmas because it might offend Muslims; this is such bull$hit, I find it embarrassing.

Rubbish Dylan. Few are opposed to things which enhance our culture, like a decent Ruby Murray, or out on the lash for St Patricks night. The problem in this case is it is a fundamental element of Law within the confines of a court. A judge and Jury need to be able to see a defendents reaction to cross examination to determine whether a witness or defendent is reliable on the Stand. Alternatively we go backwards and use lie detectors and dispense with the elements of UK Law developed over centuries and return to the Stone Age.
What isn't acceptable is those that seek to ban the Burka etc completely as the French have done. It's akin to making non-muslim women go out naked, nice idea for us blokes but not very comfortable for the muslim woman and that should be respected. I think the Judge found a sound and respectful balance.
.

Nice rant, which I basically agree with, but totally irrelevant to this particular post.

I was responding to a post. Read the post I was responding to and then read my response.

The post I was responding too was having a go at people for sticking to their culture when they come to England and saying that people should adapt to our culture and not try and hang on to their own. That is what I was responding to. You should read before your start shouting. That is the problem, when people just start yelling (figuratively, of course).

I stated previously on this thread that I thought the judge did a really good job of balancing the rights of the individual (to their cultural and religious beliefs) with the needs of society as a whole. Basically, my previous post is very similar to the one you just yelled at me in your post.

I'm against any religion what-so-ever, why should religion, tell you, what to eat, what to wear or how to live your life.

Imo, religion is man made, so why would I listen to someone who wants total control over my thoughts.

Its a form of mind control, nothing more nothing less.

It all needs a fundamental change. Some sort of external stimulus to shake everything up and gain a true quality of perspective -an old idea - like a message from the stars,or a visit perhaps.Man's Inhumanity To Man will have to be addressed at last.

Exiled dictator- what you have written is profound and a great post. I am Jewish origin but often ill at ease with Orthodox Jews who separate themselves from British liberal societies values. I also take people as they come and have friends from many communities in the UK. A lot of racism comes from fear of the unknown. I was given a tour of a mosque in Leyton and had a cup of coffee with a couple of the guys there who gave me a brief introduction to Islam. A lot of religious ideas are very complex and unfortunately the tabloid press tries to sensationalise stories in regards to Islam.

I recommend Tom Holland "In the Shadow of the sword" Deals with the fall of the Roman empire and the different religions.

(I drew the conclusion they are mostly the same thing. So did some bloke in the 6/7th Century and the Christians,Jews, Zoroastrians and Muslins made him public enemy number one... funny that. I forget his name think it began with M but apparently he got quite a following before being eradicated)

[24:31]
And tell the believing women to subdue their eyes, and maintain their chastity. They shall not reveal any parts of their bodies, except that which is necessary. They shall cover their chests, and shall not relax this code in the presence of other than their husbands, their fathers, the fathers of their husbands, their sons, the sons of their husbands, their brothers, the sons of their brothers, the sons of their sisters, other women, the male servants or employees whose sexual drive has been nullified, or the children who have not reached puberty. They shall not strike their feet when they walk in order to shake and reveal certain details of their bodies. All of you shall repent to GOD, O you believers, that you may succeed.
From that great manual of how to live a successful lifestyle in the Middle East the Quaran tells us this....Their Courts or Scholars, all men, came up with the Burka as a result. Women are chattels and an Arab saying tells us "Our women are our precious Jewels, why display them to thieves"
This is mind and cultural control, everything most citizens of the UK abhor, it continues many millenia of male muslim abuse of women, it is one element of a sharp sword where we see Muslim men using western culturally acceptable tools, like alcohol and drugs to manipulate white british girls and on the other dominate their own women by the use of "religion" and cultural bullying.
We should be doing everything to free Muslim women from this male hegemony whilst protecting our own transparent open values and rights.
It's plainly lunacy that any person should be given the advantage of anonymity in a court as a result of wearing a Burka....how so for Robin Hood and his band of quasi freedom fighters or Batman and Robin.
This is no more a matter of religiosity than a question of dress sense. There are accepted conventions of behaviour in every country, attempting to live a life outside those conventions comes at a cost.
Fundamentalist believers need to look for some fresh air to clean out the stench of bigotry from the way they live their lives, the freedoms given by our western democracies have been hard fought and won.
I for one, believe the French approach to protecting and celebrating their culture is admirable but as an Island Nation created from a hotchpotch of races, Britain needs to allow all the benefits of all the good stuff from different cultures to flow through our lives, Diversity, choice, intellect, colour and of course culture. However, where specific cultural behaviours introduce or further contributions to social unrest and inequality our government and courts should step in.
Not by assisting the negatives but by blowing the fresh wind of common sense into the debate...this is plainly common-sense.

I recommend 'Selected Works of Enver Hoxha: Volume I' which talks of the State Atheism imposed in Albania.
