Chair finally in the middle long term? 22:53 - Feb 4 with 4891 viewsJevlar

A lot of positives tonight but one thing that feels like it’s been in the making forever is Illy playing in the Number 10 behind the striker role.

Bar getting a goal (which his first half display deserved) he had a great game. Anyone else feel he now needs to play there permanently and let Saito/Kolli take up the left wing berth?

I don’t know well the link works but you should be able see Chair’s heat map and shot map for the game.

A knock-on of having Chair in the middle is that it enables Saito to track back and support Paal on defence, which he did really well in the first half (not so well in the second when he gave away the pen!) Still that's something Chair never seemed comfortable with, consequently Paal seemed a better player last night than in recent matches.

Didn’t feel like long ago people wanted chair dropped. Two games ago to be exact

With Dunne the king of the castle and Ilias Chair playing at ten I am stunned we haven't had ParkRoyal riding in here like King Julien in Madagascar.

In short, YES. We play best when running through Chair, who is still our best player, and having him in the middle is the way to achieve that. He can drift from side to side, linking up with both full back / winger combinations (as he did brilliantly for the move that led to the Paal free kick and opening goal), and offer himself as an option in the final third. Both Smyth and Saito staying wide gives him and Morgan more space centrally, and I trust that S&S work hard enough both ways to not make the lack of another DM as much of a liability.

The downside is out of possession and figuring how to stop quick transitions. I was a little surprised Chair essentially took the Field role when we didn't have the ball - dropping deeper alongside Field who took the 'Varane' position, and Morgan was still being the one to press, but Marti addressed it himself in the post-match - there's still stuff to work on to find a better balance. The upside of being more threatening - especially if/when we regain possession high - is well worth the balance risk, IMO.

Also, as Brian mentioned, this only worked at all due to the work rate of Chair and Morgan, so we need to find ways to rotate them effectively and be quick to adjust if teams are exploiting the change too much.

I thought - guessed, really - that that was because being on the right Morgan was closer to Beck (he's got the Devil's Haircut) and he was a real danger man, so Morgan could press him quickly while Chair dropped quickly to left-centre mid to stop the overload from the cross-field ball.

Very possibly. My assumption is that Morgan is just the better presser of the ball and has the legs to hurry and harass the person in possession, in the same way Amos used to do.

The reason I was surprised is that the last time we played 2 of the 3 'usual' midfielders was at Norwich away, in that case it was Morgan and Field alongside each other, with one going and the other sitting. This time it was less a 4231 and more the usual formation. I guess it's Marti trying to keep the same defensive shape and a level of consistency, but swapping Chair for Field (positionally) meaning we have more conviction when we have the ball.

Altogether it's a really interesting (and imo welcome) change, and with more options available post injury / transfer window at CB and attacking midfield, I wonder if this is a step towards a more expansive Marti style of play...

To clear up any confusion, we set up virtually every game as 4 2 3 1. Usually with F & V as the 2, but Morgan played there on Tues in lieu of Varane. The modern game obviously sees variation during the match. Field pushing on at times, Paal temporarily slipping into midfield at times etc

Id say it changes as they move up the pitch, one of the stats sites called it 4-1-4-1, others call it 4-2-3-1 when defending deep its 4-5-1 they all 4-3-3 variants to be fair and we are very fluid. Chair was starting deeper than he would have done playing that role under other managers or even at the start of the season. Pushing furthest forward for the press when the keeper has the ball,

Madsen actually has more minutes played and 2 goals (he even has penalty map FFS !), so read into the stats whatever you like.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?
