30 loyal souls on the CUSA bus got an unexpected bonus at Oxford (A40 services). We ran into former U’s goalkeeper, Shamal George, now with Wycombe. Sadly, on crutches for eight weeks due to injury.

With Bloomfield going to Luton, Wycombe dressing room expecting change. He loved his time at Col U and was as delighted as we to share pleasant conversation. Nice lad, head in the clouds…..literally!

Their supporters will be laughing all the way home

The quarter final was there but we threw it away.

RC must spend some of the war chest on two strikers.

It is the old story
No striker once LT is off

And let's sort out the ST saga this week so we can bring in two strikers

I see where you're coming from, but the problem tonight was about the catastrophic goalkeeping errors, not the lack of strikers. Winning teams start with solid defence and sound goalkeeping. With that in place, one goal would have been enough to see us through.

I'm a bit of a Col U newbie, so people on this forum know a lot more about the Club than me. But I listened to a 5 minute interview with DC on BBC Essex, and it seemed clear that a couple more players are going to depart before we do any (probably fairly shit) loan deals. I'm thinking that this is not a Club where the owner has any ambition beyond mediocrity.

I was going to put a long blurb about the history of Col U under Cowling's ownership.

However, mediocrity would be more than welcome and Col U right now!

Better finishing (i.e. another striker or two) and we would have been out of sight at half-time. Undone by two goalkeeping blunders, albeit Macey should never have been put in that position for the first one. However, despite going out of our last cup competition, this was nowhere near as abject as the previous two defeats, so that's something at least. I didn't hear any attendance stats announced, but I reckon there must have been 150-200 of the Faithful there tonight - cracking effort for a cold Tuesday evening, and great to see you as always Noah.

Agree it wasn't quite as bad, so that's a small crumb of comfort I suppose. I thought that the error from Macey was one of the worst howlers I've seen over the last year or so. He did make a fine save in the second half but it will be a match he'll want to forget.

Macey's post-match interview was a hard watch, but to be fair he did it and took responsibility, not that he could have done anything else. Need to move on and concentrate on Bromley.

I wonder if he lost concentration for the corner? Maybe he'd started to think about the shoot-out?

We've literally just had a run of seven matches without conceding a goal and only eight teams in the division have conceded less goals. Does that not suggest that we've got a solid defence and a sound goalkeeper? Macey made two big errors against Cheltenham, I'm not disputing that, but let's not lose sight of the bigger picture here. For me, we were the better side last night and didn't deserve to lose. We're very close to being a good team at this level, we just have to stick with it.

Yes, well said Wessex, a terrific and loyal support for the time of year and level of the tournament.

An unfortunate and undeserved result. We've now lost two last minute games with an abject performance sandwiched between. I hope we're not in danger of undoing the fragile confidence growing from the little run of draws, clean sheets and a couple of wins which was a hint of better times.
A win at Bromley and something at Harrogate would be the tonic.

Sadly unless the Tovide situation is resolved quickly there will be no more additions to our team.

I have always given Hops the benefit of the doubt but sadly as soon as LT went off the goal threat disappeared too.

There must be a case for either JK Gordon or Oscar Thorn playing up top.

As good as LT is he cannot play every game and so we either refuse to sell Tovide and he plays Saturday or give Thorn and Gordon free rein.

Two strikers are required as a priority.

Whatever people's views of the Vertu Motors Trophy the opportunity to play in the quarter finals was gifted to a poor Cheltenham side.

I don't blame Macey. After all during our 11 game unbeaten run he kept 7 consecutive clean sheets and last night made one great save.

We outplayed the Robins and gifted them the game.

I am so disappointed because we needed that trophy distraction but we threw it away.

Bromley will be difficult at best.
I expect three points against the Sulpherites though.

The run without conceding can't be denied, but we've shipped 8 goals in the last 4 games so I would argue that's a worry. Combined with the fact that we don't convert nearly enough chances, it's left us potentially in another scrap at the bottom of the league. Maybe we do need a forward or two but who knows where they're going to come from.

I’d say easily 150 to 200. A great effort by those not in the CUSA bus. We got home circa 01-00, so the 19-00 kick off offered benefits, notwithstanding that we “lost” three fans for about 15 minutes that initially couldn’t find their way back to the bus.

The game itself; frankly, kamikaze errors by the better team has cost the club over £40,000 in lost prize-money. I never expected us to get to Wembley with teams like Birmingham in our way, but I did hope for a confidence boosting money spinning run. Poor Matt Macey had a mare. Shi5 happens.

Now on to a sell out Bromley….

But you're only picking the last four games because it helps with your narrative it's also 9 goals conceded in the last 13 matches. You can pretty much make stats say whatever you want them to. Also amongst those nine goals was a debatable penalty and two goalkeeping errors, it's not like we're suddenly gifting the opposition chance after chance. I don't think we've suddenly become a team that can't defend, the goals conceded over the course of the season suggest that we're better than average when it comes to defending. And we definitely need a forward or two and I expect them to arrive in this transfer window.

The match report suggested Macey was fouled for the second goal, but the highlights don't suggest that. I still think he's a better keeper than Goodman (although Goodman seems to have improved) and overall he's had a good campaign so far. But when you make not one but two absolute howlers you can expect to feel the heat, as that's the lot of a keeper. Terrific second half save but only the blunders will be remembered.

I forgot to mention that the support could be clearly heard on the Sky coverage, much more than their miserable lot.

The report on the CTFC website says 111 U’s fans in attendance, but I’m certain it was more than that. I bought my ticket on the night, and the QR code wouldn’t scan so the turnstile operator had to let me in manually. I reckon their system was only counting scanned codes.

Wessex - at a loss regarding your comment 'Macey should never have been put in that position for the first one'

The back pass was fine and placed him in no danger if

A) he had kicked at first attempt without trying to control it

B) his unnecessary need to control ball and which led to mis-control

Any way these things happen and he will learn from them.

Absolutely it was Macey's error, not disputing that, and yes he should have cleared it first time. My point was we should have been playing out from that position, not passing back to him to invite more pressure. However, it is a measure of the man that he came out immediately post-match and acknowledged his mistakes that cost us the game.
