Tactics, Squad, Mistakes 11:21 - Nov 25 with 1328 viewsDorsetIan

We've lost so many points this season because of avoidable mistakes - yesterday, big time.

And you hear people say that there is nothing RM can do about individual errors on the pitch.

But RM is trying to get a team of limited quality to play like Man City.

Amazingly, they do still seem to be trying to do this - some effort after getting so little reward so far this season. They'd be forgiven for being demoralised but I don't see that.

But I do see players trying so hard to be better than they are. They are all playing on their limits and trying to do things that perhaps naturally they wouldn't be doing.

And when do we make mistakes? When we're pushing it. When we're tired, or trying to do things to quickly, or when we're trying to do something that we're just not quite good enough to do.

These mistakes are the inevitable result of a squad that is overreaching. And that's on RM.

Yes, the "individual errors" argument makes sense when it's about McCarthy letting Salah put the ball into an empty net, but generally it's garbage. As you say, most of the errors come about because we're trying to do things we shouldn't and that's RM's fault.

Why does RM persist like this? I'm still unsure whether it's because he is totally stupid or totally arrogant. I think it's probably both.

Even with AM's errors, we have to ask the question of who was involved in giving him another contract, despite all the evidence we've seen. I don't think any of the fans were surprised to see him fvcking up again, but RM and Ankersen seem to want to pay him a lot of money to play for us.

"But RM is trying to get a team of limited quality to play like Man City."

Nowadays, nobody in his right mind would try to get his team to play like Man City without Rodri, and as we never had Rodri, it was never going to be successful here - and I don't call finishing 9 points off the automatic promotion places in the Championship particularly "successful" for a newly relegated team.

But the truth is we never really did try to play like Man City. Apart from the fact we passed a lot and had a lot of possession, our styles were always very different. Man City's possession was mainly in the opposition's half; ours is mainly in our own half. They boxed the opposition into their penalty area whereas we let the opposition box us into our own penalty area- so, in effect, it's exactly the opposite. There was one chink of light yesterday though - and I don't know whether it was because Martin is learning at last or whether it's because the players are ignoring his orders - and that was the counterattacking goal we scored.

The reason we play in different halves is just because City are better at it than we are. If we were good enough at tippy tappy to get over the half way line then we would.

RM really does try to copy City. It's everything from the Pep quote on his office wall, to the inverted full backs, to the false 9s. What he's TRYING to do is almost exactly the same - except that RM's version is a dumbed down version, almost a cliched version of what Pep does. As you say without the likes of Rodri or De Bruyne or Haaland it's never going to work.

The only reason we scored the counter attacking goal was because AM dropped the ball. If he hadn't we wouldn't have moved it up the pitch so quickly.

It's an old style anyway that's been well and truly found out this season. Successful modern coaches are not going to use it, apart from, in limited spells during games, for players to take a breather or run the clock down.

Every tactic has its day until every man and his dog works out how to defeat it.

I wasn't really making a point about City. I was just my shorthand for RM's style.

I guess the point is that we're trying to play to a style that is a massive stretch for us, rather than actually playing to our strengths. And that makes mistakes far more likely.

Playing with the hand that you're dealt is a pretty good guide to most things in life.

You're right. Russell Martin does think he's copying Man City's style, but, in reality, he isn't. It isn't just about possession percentages; it's more to do with where your players are on the pitch. Key to it all is a central midfielder who controls the centre of the pitch, sprays passes forward from there and closes down any attempts by the opposition to break out. We don't have anyone doing that and neither do City now that Rodri's injured. The nearest we ever had to someone like that was probably Schneiderlin. Wanyama could also control the centre and close down opposition attacks, but he couldn't do the passing as well.

You're also right that we simply don't have the personnel for that style of football.

Idon’t see anything “pressured”about Mccarthy’s mistakes. I once played in goal for the cubs and we got beat 9-0. But I would never have taken completely the wrong angle when coming out to Salah, not rolled the ball to Fernandez when clearly, the best he could do was pass it back again. Whatever happened to throwing the ball out? Much more accurate than kicking, and a site less risky than tippy tippy all fall down.

Stupid possession football is costing Man City again. A fairly poor Feyenoord side has come back from 3-0 down by picking off the errors in City's passing game.

City's winless run extends to 6 games. They've conceded at least 2 goals in every game since they beat us.

Passing around at the back = goals in the bank for the opposition. Nobody, apart from Saints, is going to play that style of football any more.

When we played City away Dirk, City were not that special and I think a Brighton or a Bournemouth would have got something. On Sunday when we played Liverpool and we went ahead I believe most other teams in the PL even in the bottom half would not have lost it.

teams cant score in there own half so if youre going to make mistakes dont do it in youre own penalty area, what ever happened to just turning the other side round, nothing wrong in winning sh+tty.

If Archer hadn’t of fúcked around with the penalty against a woeful Man United side we’d of gone on to win that game.
If we could mark properly at corners we’d of had 4 more points from the Ipswich and Leicester games.

It’s all ifs and buts.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.
