Best game for us so far. Overall thought we looked more solid in midfield with Morgan and Madsen performing well. No storming through the middle we have been used to at home.

If they are good enough , then 23 years old is definitely OK to have as a first choice midfielder.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t be first choice. I just think at 23 and he’s had now 6 games in England, it would be good to give him the odd game of rotation. But with our injury list that isn’t possible.

Varane as I said earlier was getting better each game, a few more games like that and he's established.

Morgan still needs to improve his tackling, but the rest is there. He plays a little like Wilkins. Field is still ahead of him when everyone is back, in my view. You need dogged players in the middle for the champ, as it's brutal.

Varane was a class above, so he won the midfield battles for us on his own. They also played it down our left a lot, and apart from one time, Field was rock solid.

Colback and Fox won't be here next season. They get injured too often. Varane has now shown he can replace Colback. We just need a replacement for Fox, or Field may end up there permanently.

Ashby did better; remember he's playing out of position. Saito needs to start ahead of Madsen so Chair can roam free. Madsen was better, but he was still behind the play too often. He's got the skills, just not the engine. You saw what engines were needed with Varane charging forward and tracking back all the time.

zzzzzzzzzz

Agree with the plaudits for Varane. And suddenly, no one is talking about Colback any more.

Really enjoyed Varane's performance today - we have definitely seen hints of it to date but he is rapid over a few yards and already accustomed to the physicality.

Am really excited by Morgan if he can play like this at 18. Very early days but hope we get to see what he is like after 50 games, 100 games and so on as Clive has spoken about masterfully about with other youngsters in the team.

Hope to god we can get that first win of the season on Tuesday night!

Best performance of the season by some distance, Varane MOTM, Morgan super impressive and making a huge difference but also Madsen especially first half was excellent and played a number of killer passes that opened them up (Smyth fell over his feet on at least 3 occasions) as well as moving the ball quickly the way those 3 interchanged . I thought Field did better at LCB than anyone other JCS has done this season. Celar continues disappoint for me, a half decent striker and we win that game.

Superb performance today, as someone said earlier, since his suspension, he’s come back a different player. Looking a very astute signing. Certainly got great fitness levels, he was everywhere today and involved in so much of our good passages of play. Certainly adds the bite we need in midfield. Foe me Saito should be on the left, Ashby did ok, but he isn’t ready to play every week, Celar just doesn’t look like he’s anywhere near good enough, still early days, granted, but, he just doesn’t seem to have any awareness or confidence. Frey is first choice when fit. 2 good points in the last 2 games, although, we missed a good opportunity today to win?

Very happy with Varane's progress. Quite ironic the Bellingham brother got sent off while the Varane brother stayed on and played well, considering our position.

Morgan has a huge amount of potential too though. You'd expect a kid of that age to play with energy but he seemed to have a decent head on his shoulders, not waste passes (until tired at the end admittedly), time his runs and tackles. Thought he gave us a lot of what we've been sorely missing.

Varane looka a little like Patrick Vierra when he plays, though obviously not in that class.

Wins the ball, strong in the tackle, drives forward, can pick a pass, competes in the air. Really impressive today, bossed the midfield. Hopefully can add a few goals from central midfield which we have lacked for years.
Morgan complemented him well.

Going a bit OTT with Varane's performance yesterday. It was much better than we have seen but still has a little more to do before I give him some of the comments that I read. My level of expectancy must be higher than most!!!

What I do like about him is the fact that he tackles and gets physical which is what we do not do enough of.

Well done to him yesterday.

You have a point, gazza. We're delighted with Varane's performance because our CM has been so soft for a long time. Now he's coming up to speed he's plugging the gaps and showing the steel we've desperately needed. It's no wonder we're going a bit OTT.

Totally agree mate , if ya good enough age has nothing to do with it . The VaM combination looks good.

The bit in the first half where he waited for Patrick Roberts to turn back inside Ashby before smashing him and taking the ball…. Worth the entrance money alone.

Totally agree, Madson had a great first half. Great touch, lovely weighted balls into space. Needs to play further forward as not remotely combative.

Have to say I prefer Field in that back three role than in midfield. He is really poor when receiving the ball facing our keeper. Far more progressive when playing out from the back.

After that performance, hope springs, but our attacking threat is the big worry.
