Think it is a case of the manager finding the right fit for the players at his disposal and the skills they possess. If you think about it Ronald looked better playing in front of Naughton on the right last season when Key was injured and as he did yesterday on the left, sometimes good skillful players with different style of play don't compliment each other, Naughton's experience allows him to be more adaptable to different players.
Both Key and Ronald have good points but with a bit more experience they may end up being a better fit with help of coaching.

I think much of the improvement is players finally bedding in and getting used to Championship football. TBH I had my doubts that some ever would.

Yes but there is also a case of where they bed in, in the past Ntcham was asked to play out wide left or right similar Piroe was tried out wide in the end Piroe played up top Ntcham in the middle but with ball winners around them to get the ball to them both, helps if the ball winners have a level of skill that releases them into space quicker.
Who would have thought of putting Pearl-Harris out on the right and swapping Ronald to the left, we have seen Key and Ronald struggle to bed in together and small glimpses of what Pearl-Harris is capable of yesterday got the best out of players.
Sometimes the coaches make good descions sometimes they are forced on them through injuries and omissions of players that the manager would think are key to the success of the team. Other managers will see how we play and adapt to suit but if we are force to change then it makes the job of opposing managers harder to counter.
Sometimes managers get it awfully wrong, yesterday ours got it right I'm happy with that.

That’s it. Blame the manager when we lose and then find excuses to criticise him when we win. Keep an open mind instead of stubbornly sticking to an agenda. That way you can enjoy the pleasure of our wins too

Why make that point. Dr W made an excellent point about why it’s taken so long to start playing this style and most if not all would agree. LW has underperformed as a coach until now in my mind but has shown he can get a tune out of the squad he has at his disposal.

No need for the snarky comments.

Without being snarky, I genuinely can’t believe people think he’s underperformed.

We’ve got the weakest squad we’ve had for years with next to no goal threat and he’s got us to tenth. Put an average championship striker, let alone a Piroe, in this squad andwe’d more than likely be top six.

Cabango and Darling haven’t just become a fearsome centre back partnership, neither of them were near the level they are currently playing at before this season.

I dread to think where this squad would be under Martin or Duff.

Pathetic innit
We get a good win and what we see is this crap aimed at an individual poster .
Win and me are hardly chums and he wouldn’t join me in a textile free sauna evening but he makes good points and in this regard he is bang on the money
We have faffed abolitionist too long . It’s why we had a pitiful crowd last night
Pointless having a go at the likes of me for not travelling 500 miles round trip to see games ,far more aposite to comment on just why thisands have literally walked away this season.
It’s mainly due to the football.
It’s getting better so they can return now
Last night however, setting off fireworks and munching on a baked potato was more entertaining

I am beginning to feel for Williams ,a bit .

I think he might have seen the Light

To be fair the William's he has tried to use his experienced players in a relatively inexperienced team when need , small changes and the introduction of players where he think were needed for the most part keeping us on the front foot in games, the question of strength in depth gets raised because of some of the substitutions made but they have not been as shambolic as Martin's, although he did try and give players a chance, yesterday he brought players on like for like and while we were still under pressure we coped with it well. Changes have been tried in a sensible way.

Neddy's been an arse for 20+ years. He ain't gonna change now.

You're right of course. If this squad is capable of the performances we've seen in the last couple of weeks with the kind of tactical changes people have been asking for then it certainly should have been capable of more during September and October. As hard as people will always try to pretend otherwise, Williams has to bear responsibility for that.

The maddest thing is that we've been here before. We spent months listening to people claiming that our poor performances were nothing to do with the manager at the time and all down to the squad, even when that obviously wasn't the case. Same here to a certain extent, although nowhere near as bad of course. Williams has much less to work with than Russy did, but he could be working with it more effectively.

It IS down to the manager as to how the team is set up and we have been gruesome to watch, whether live or via a stream .
This is a mediocre league and last night saw us hold a previously free scoring Watford to nil . We could ,again, have won by more and saved the anxiety we seem to invite late in games.
I am hoping Williams has learned now and that the local based fans return . They cannot be accused of lack of effort now.
It’s looking much better .

A manager getting the best out of the squad doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the level they should always have been playing at and anything before is a failure.

Taking that logic to an extreme to illustrate the point, Leicester winning the league when they did shouldn’t have been a surprise because that’s the level those players were capable of playing at.

I’ve said it on other posts, I seriously doubt Martin or Duff would have got performances like last night out of this team or have them at 19 points in 14 games. Can probably add Coopet to that too.

Leicester’s case was an anomaly along the lines of ‘give a monkey a pen…’

I do take issue with your opinion on we couldn’t do better before. Ok, players fitting in, match fitness etc, do take time but the fact that a great deal of us have been screaming for a particular style of play which eventually was adopted does hint on it being possible earlier than this.

Martin was the same. He stubbornly kept plugging away with his style but change, eventually, and we picked up points. Only for him to revert to type.

I hope we keep this style going. It’s exciting now in comparison and add a two footed goal scoring AM or no.10 and we could stay top 10 or possibly better.

Yes, it was an extreme example. That wasn’t what you would usually from that group of players. To say ‘well that’s the standard they should always have been playing at’ after two wins and good performances is disingenuous and unrealistic.

By that token, Martins squad should have romped the league based on their 10 game run. Realistically, we know that neither that, nor the streak where we seemed to lose every week for months was their true level.

We are still playing with a #9 who looks fit now and puts the effort in, but is a step behind and rarely touches the ball in threatening areas. That makes the job much harder.

The 8,000 who turned up last night created a positive atmosphere to which the team responded. Without the "Grimes only passes sideways" gang missing, without the "this is the weakest squad we have had in over a 100 years," back at home on their sofas made a big difference. The food concourses were empty because the 8k came to watch a game of football, not moan about the food and everyting elses around them. It would probably be a good thing if we played the rest of the season in front of poor crowds. Poor but positive,

As you’ve said before, they will come back with winning football. More will come back with winning football that is good to watch.

Not in the numbers we used to have though, it’s very easy to watch every game at home these days.

It’s habit isn’t it
Must confess if I were living back home, I really would see going to a game live as a better option to wat high at home, which, let’s face it,is a poor substitute .
Right now,it’s not worth a 500 mile round trip as getting older and having family left to stay with doesn’t help .
We’ve had some air BnBs in the Marina, and near the ground that weren’t that good.

Bottom line though,as you know,I have serious beef with some fellow fans and my missus refuses point blank to either go to a game of even visit Swansea anymore

Forum poison lingers

It’s not cheap and it is a choice. I know people who have given it up through cost, but probably would have found the money if it was their only way of watching us.

Results will attract the floating crowd though.

And there lies the biggest problem in attracting supporters through the turnstiles, you can pick up the remote and watch your favourite team from your armchair. How many who used to go now only watch us live on the TV, if this facility was not available and had to go to the ground, attendances would be far far higher. The trend of live coverage will never be reversed, clubs are happy with the Sky money particularly the new contract this season with increased revenue, it's now about how clubs like ours adapt. It's nearly time for season ticket prices, the club have to be really inventive with next seasons pricing. In my opinion good football alone will not be enough to bring the crowds back, football supporters have got lazy and out of the habit of going to matches. Good football will help but alone will not be enough.

We've been a dull team to watch for most of the last five years. Results haven't been great, and games have too often been tedious. It's not a recipe to draw in the floating support, and those with kids will think twice about paying to bring them along as we all know how bored they can get.

If we want crowds to increase, results need to improve and so does the entertainment on offer. Shots, dribbles and goals excite crowds. Possession stats do not.

A real conundrum. When the CE and his team saw the revenue figures for the catering outlets last night their eyes must have watered. Let's try and build on this positivity. The number of negative posters on here who completely wrote off Peart-Harris and Bianchi is a fine example; there is no way you could watch those two last night and not be impressed. Our goalie was superb last night, Key is beginning to look like the bargain of the decade. So many positive performances. Kyle struggled at times, Vipo is beyond poor and powder puff weak - a big girl's blouse when anything physical is needed. Start with Bianchi up front and good things are possible. And an up arrow for Liam who put in a hell of shift last night.

The amount of people I know who used to think nothing of turning up every week to watch us play Kidderminster and Gillingham, but now pick and choose or just don’t go at all is staggering.

It’s not as if the football now is worse than it was 20/30 years ago.

I agree with others. Winning, attractive football will draw people back, but agree with you, some will still prefer to watch from their front room and put the money towards a holiday or whatever instead.

I don’t think it comes close to attending games, but I can understand it.

Can’t argue with that. One of the games I really enjoyed was the year after relegation where we lost 2-3 to Ipswich. It was to me a cracker even though we lost and I couldn’t wait for the following games.
Now I’m totally indifferent not only to the product but also to the arrogance of the club regarding pricing. I can’t remember the guys name…someone to do with ticket sales, finance etc… a few years ago but his attitude was pay the money for a season ticket and consider yourself lucky we let you have one!
I invested in Sky Sports instead. Enjoyed the match last night and wish the team well.
