In a way I'm glad they did that. I too have been intrigued to see what happens when all the 'star' false-9/false-10 etc players are bunged on at once with no out-and-out striker and it doesn't work because there's too many of them.

You need a balanced & varied team, not a group of, albeit highly talented, individuals all playing the same.
The commentators did my nut in. Constantly going on about England having an 'abundance of talent' and each time they opened their gob Greece piled forward and almost scored. This happened a number of times. STFU.

I'm not getting misty eyed over Southgate who certainly has many limitations. It's just that the common narrative that we murder teams with our attacking talent if only we'd have a go means you leave yourselves more open to opponents who play smart.

I listened to the first half of the ROI game; the commentators were drooling. Its his third game in a meaningless game and frankly, if he can't experiment in such circumstances, then when can he?
I suspect he and we have learned a lot from last night. And while gung-ho at the top level is always easy to pick off, its about: the balance; playing to your strenghts; and the ability to adapt when it's not working.
GS did well. However, you felt he was both too cautious and lacking in the adaptability department. LC, third game FFS, experimented, got it wrong. So, let's see what he's learned before we get all sacky.
His and whoever is manager's problems are: bundles of attacking options which need to be harnessed within the confines of international football; we don't have a Pirlo or a left-back; and ridiculous expectation.
Not playing Watkins from the off however, baffling. |

Possibly Dave, but he has a tendency to try and do it all himself rather than a quick , easy pass sometimes. Plus all the rolling around, gobbing off to anyone who dares tackle him and general histrionics to wake the crowd up. I’m in the camp (possibly of one) to see what the team looks like without him skewing the formation and generally trying to do it all.
But accept I’m in a large minority.

The tactics/formation thing looks like it’s a great distraction from the fact that all the talent in that team were dreadful. I’ve seen reports giving most of them 6’s and 7’s when in truth there were mostly performances that looked like 3’s and 4’s at best. It’s clear you can’t play Foden and Bellingham together as they want to occupy the same position on the pitch which inevitably leads to Foden having to drift out wider where he is ineffective. England sort of have the same thing as QPR do - you become a better, more crucial part of the puzzle the longer you're not playing/not part of it. I would try and 'turn' a couple of Scandi types, give them English citizenship, pick them for their new national team, BUT don't tell them, or their teammates what they are supposed to be doing. The "glorified friendlies" line boils my piss. It's up there with "it's the taking part that counts". I'll wager that many saw the World Cup as inconsequential when it first began but now it's one the greatest and coveted tournaments on earth.
