England v Greece 20:17 - Oct 10 with 10304 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | Watching this. Bizarrely Carsley seems to have done a Marti, trying to get as many attacking players on the pitch at anyone time. Massive holes in midfield, Greeks hitting on the counter. Looks eerily familiar.
England v Greece on 10:53 - Oct 11 with 1887 views | Juzzie | In a way I'm glad they did that. I too have been intrigued to see what happens when all the 'star' false-9/false-10 etc players are bunged on at once with no out-and-out striker and it doesn't work because there's too many of them. Now we know. You need a balanced & varied team, not a group of, albeit highly talented, individuals all playing the same. The commentators did my nut in. Constantly going on about England having an 'abundance of talent' and each time they opened their gob Greece piled forward and almost scored. This happened a number of times. STFU. Greece deserved that regardless of our own failings. Five times they had the ball in the net and another cleared off the line. You don't do that by not being forward thinking. The ones disallowed for offside were close calls too, one or two may have been given in the pre-VAR days.

England v Greece on 08:12 - Oct 11 by Ned_Kennedys | Last night wasn’t ‘handbrake off’ was it when there was no centre forward picked and the team selection and tactics looked like they were set up by a 5 year old. Laughable that some are getting all misty eyed for Southgate. |
I'm not getting misty eyed over Southgate who certainly has many limitations. It's just that the common narrative that we murder teams with our attacking talent if only we'd have a go means you leave yourselves more open to opponents who play smart. Whoever gets the job long term has many puzzles to solve but a huge talent pool.

England v Greece on 08:38 - Oct 11 by PlanetHonneywood | I listened to the first half of the ROI game; the commentators were drooling. Its his third game in a meaningless game and frankly, if he can't experiment in such circumstances, then when can he? I suspect he and we have learned a lot from last night. And while gung-ho at the top level is always easy to pick off, its about: the balance; playing to your strenghts; and the ability to adapt when it's not working. GS did well. However, you felt he was both too cautious and lacking in the adaptability department. LC, third game FFS, experimented, got it wrong. So, let's see what he's learned before we get all sacky. His and whoever is manager's problems are: bundles of attacking options which need to be harnessed within the confines of international football; we don't have a Pirlo or a left-back; and ridiculous expectation. Not playing Watkins from the off however, baffling. |
Two major tournament finals out of the last three, one of which definitely should have been won, even more talent to choose from now. I don't think the expectations are that ridiculous, even if they may have been in the past. Agree beating a poor Ireland team is nothing to write home about and last night was a sobering reminder that it won't be easy to make another final, let alone win it.
England v Greece on 11:47 - Oct 11 with 1652 views | themodfather | PICKFORD IS CRAP he has to go, we jokingly call him CLEAN SHEET as he never keeps one, why the obsession with England with goalies from struggling teams??? how were some of the team? some seem to play a handful of prem games yet walk into the team! lewis, colwill, makuele? mainoo..... also starting with no striker, very poor choice. Foden is the Invisible man . greece did their job and cut us up, 3 disallowed? good job the nations league is not a big trophy.

he was rubbish last night and set the tone for the night with some stupid early errors but he's Englands best keeper by miles, no one even close to him

Fail to win this group and get promoted and it will be the same for the Euros although you have to go some not to qualify for that

I thought he was alright last night though, the only one of our attacking players who did anything

Possibly Dave, but he has a tendency to try and do it all himself rather than a quick , easy pass sometimes. Plus all the rolling around, gobbing off to anyone who dares tackle him and general histrionics to wake the crowd up. I’m in the camp (possibly of one) to see what the team looks like without him skewing the formation and generally trying to do it all. But accept I’m in a large minority. Plus I’m very anti-messiah figures (after Stanley there can be no other) | | | | Login to get fewer ads

he can be greedy at times and try and do everything but you look at the impact he makes on games compared to likes of Foden who let games drift by for England, he's done well and is still very young.
England v Greece on 12:32 - Oct 11 with 1522 views | Lanhoop | The tactics/formation thing looks like it’s a great distraction from the fact that all the talent in that team were dreadful. I’ve seen reports giving most of them 6’s and 7’s when in truth there were mostly performances that looked like 3’s and 4’s at best. Hopefully the poor fans who are heading to Helsinki this weekend get to see something a lot better from them. It couldn’t be worse, could it?

There we can agree, Foden looks lost. Maybe it’s just the hype I can’t stand, he’s clearly an exceptional talent and can affect games loke few others but I’d like a bit more humility. Win something with England and then you can be Jesus, not before

It’s clear you can’t play Foden and Bellingham together as they want to occupy the same position on the pitch which inevitably leads to Foden having to drift out wider where he is ineffective. No idea if any manager can resolve that conundrum without following Ancelotti’s lead and forcing Bellingham deeper
England v Greece on 13:03 - Oct 11 with 1424 views | PlanetHonneywood | I think for the next game, I'd play Kane or Watkins as a false 9, with inverted wing-backs, two overted central midfielders in the 6 and the 8, go three at the back with Pickford as the sweeper/rush goalie for the first hour, naturally a 10, with the wide midfielders as reconverted inside liberos. As per the new diktat of Kim Jong Nourry....I wouldn't even announce my starting XI until after the game, if at all.

Surely the obvious solution is to just not play Foden.

Somewhat tenuously linked to this, acknowledging that Scholes is one of the least charismatic humans ever, he did say something interesting the other week on The Overlap when they asked him about Gerrard - Lampard and people always saying it didn’t work and Scholes should play in the middle and then we would win everything, being that he absolutely hated playing in the middle for England and wanted to be out on the left….

England sort of have the same thing as QPR do - you become a better, more crucial part of the puzzle the longer you're not playing/not part of it. We'd obviously definitely have swept the board with Scholes in the middle, just like all will be right with the world again when Colback is back.

I would try and 'turn' a couple of Scandi types, give them English citizenship, pick them for their new national team, BUT don't tell them, or their teammates what they are supposed to be doing. What I would say to the other players is, if they try to pass to you in your own half, just stand there. [Post edited 11 Oct 18:59]

The "glorified friendlies" line boils my piss. It's up there with "it's the taking part that counts". I'll wager that many saw the World Cup as inconsequential when it first began but now it's one the greatest and coveted tournaments on earth. All competitions should be taken seriously in order to build a winning mentality. Little wonder England have won nothing for 58 years.
