Swansea City v Stoke City : Match day thread on 18:34 - Oct 5 by Just_Dave | Oli is a piano carrier not a piano player. A grafter and great attitude but not match winner. Liked the look of Vip today. We need a creative no 10 to get the best out of him. Also don't think we need Grimes playing as a 3rd Centre back, not at home. |

Frustrating first half when we had enough chances to take the lead. I thought Grimes had a good game today.

For me he's a closer. He's the player to bring on on about 70-75 minutes to make tiring opposing defenders work even harder.

Yeah you're right, he'd probably be much more effective in that role. Now just need a creative starting no 10

Swansea City v Stoke City : Match day thread on 18:16 - Oct 5 by Treforys_Jack | Very encouraged by what I saw of Vipotik today, need to work out how they get the best of him. Thought he looked a bit Piroesque at times when he had the ball. |
We just need to be a lot more mobile, a lot quicker around him and give the poor sod some service to work with. I think he's better suited to playing as a lone forward than Piroe was, but lacks the ability to create his own openings in the same way. For me JP was always better sitting behind Obafemi than he was playing ahead of Paterson.

I know this has been done to death Lifey but I can't help but feel Grimes holds us back so much. He's a cracking pro, he really is but I think he stunts any forward momentum we have. He's been here 10yrs and not 1 club has made a serious attempt to lure him away, that for me says it all.

He is, quite possibly, the most frustrating player in Swansea City history. Capable of being great when the mood takes him, but oh so often an absolute hindrance when it doesn't, which happens to be most of the time. As you say, the lack of interest from anywhere else in nearly ten years should tell everyone where his reputation in the game actually stands, but there are still plenty of people who simply won't have it.

Great player for me, but slows it down when he gets the ball. No on the pitch visible leadership.

Swansea City v Stoke City : Match day thread on 21:20 - Oct 5 with 1141 views | onehunglow | Grimes first thought or action is to stop play ,side foot it two yards or backwards Even chasing the game, this madness kills momentum He’s a very good pro but not a “ great” player in anyway whatsoever . He is not fit to lace the boots of the players who were club greats and they are great because of their deeds on the pitch . Their legacy is a glow when their name is mentioned Grimes is not a great tackler ,passer, defender, attacker tactician, leader and the most insipid of recent times That he is seen as great staggers me . He is the root of all that holds us back. Literally . He’s still with us when many have attracted other clubs and off they’ve popped .

Perhaps we should be blaming the person who has continually played people out of position instead of the players themselves. It's not Abdulai's fault any more than it would be Eom's fault if Lukey decided to play him in central defence.

He doesn’t want to go. On big money, and his family are from, and to extent, are settled in Swansea. He has twins on the way, if they are not already here.

If we don't at least halve the salary he's on come next contract negotiation then someone somewhere would have screwed up. We are vastly overpaying him considering his actual contribution on the pitch.

Yes he was playing out of his natural/best position, but that is no excuse when we have five in the box, he has the space to cross and lays the ball back 20 yds and our whole team have to pull back as they push up.
Swansea City v Stoke City : Match day thread on 21:45 - Oct 5 with 1037 views | SullutaCreturned | Time for my contribution I guess. Vip had no decent service, not one decent cross then we bring Cullen and Bianchini on and the latter delivers a few good crosses that Cullen can't get anywhere near. For me that shows the subs were bad, wrong. Same problems today as before, we were looking good up until the oppo box then we lost all pace, showed little creativity;constantly recycling the ball, passing 20 yards back, work forward then rinse and repeat. Stoke did defend quite well at times tjough. Still we had a few decent chances and should have done better. Darling and Cabango today showed again why we need (well our owners need) to bite the bullet and give them an acceptable deal. If we lose them both for nothing it would be criminal. The ref was a proper "homer" today, we haven't seen it often down here and we didn't take advantage and he gave us many chances. Grimes, he did ok for the most part but still dropped in between the CB's too much and still slowed down play too much as well. Why Futlon instead of Allen? Is Allen really fit and if yes, why not use our best midfielder? If Allen is that unfit or incapable then get rid. We cannot afford passengers which brings me to Abdullai. He is not a winger and never will be, it's square pegs in round holes and it needs to stop. Abdullai has no pace, he has little ability to beat a man or make a telling pass. If Cooper is limited at least he fizzes, Abdullai simmers at best.

I still thought he had a good game today. For some to say he is not a passer of the ball is ludicrous.

It is an excuse. I feel sorry for the kid. He's being hung out to dry on a regular basis. Blamed for his coach's tactical inadequacies. Do I think he's a good player in general? I have no idea. I've not seen him in his proper position enough to form an opinion. Is he obviously not a winger? Yes. You would have to ask Luke Williams why he keeps playing him there despite all the evidence suggesting that it's a catastrophically stupid thing to do.

One of the things that you can say with absolute certainly about Matt Grimes is that he's a passer of the ball.

I think it was Steve cooper who wanted him and Fulton on big contracts. Grimes contract expires in just under three years. He’s going nowhere. We’ve made him a multi millionaire. As I said he’s settled. I think he will be in Kyle Naughton territory (32 ish) when his next contract will be discussed.

I guess we can offer thanks to the Ponty Goblin then. Fulton is probably overpaid too, but as people rarely queue up to declare him one of the best midfielders in the division despite all the evidence to the contrary I am prepared to cut him more slack.
