Building for next season 23:21 - Mar 26 with 7132 viewsShun

Does anybody have a list of the contract status of the whole squad? Chaff’s usually good for one!

I think we have the following under contract for next season:

Ferguson
Nevett
Gilmour
East
Uchegbulam
Mitchell

I suspect Nevett will be sold in the summer so we have a decent centre midfield pairing and not much else. Hopefully a bit of financial certainty and a decent budget will allow for earlier and better recruitment.

Of the players out of contract I would be looking to sign Heyes (if only!) and maybe Rodney and John if the terms were reasonable.

Sinclair started the season really well, but has struggled to retain form after his first injury layoff, which then became a second long term injury. Gordon is steady and again if terms are reasonable that is a decent shout.

It worries me that because we have been offering 2 year contracts, we have got into this situation where there is a huge clear out at the end of each season. Somehow we need to break this cycle but it would require some 3 year deals because I suspect players are forcing our hand and demanding minimum 2 year deals.
Maybe if our finances improve, we could be offering players that prove themselves a 3rd season at the end of their 1st season...indeed we dont know if this is happening right now, but the financial problems will no doubt have unsettled a number of possible resignings. Tricky times....

This is my input;

Contracted for next season:

George Nevett (Expires 2026) - expected to be sold
Harvey Gilmour
Jesurun Uchegbulam
Kairo Mitchell
Kyle Ferguson
Ryan East

Out of contract from July:

Cameron John - a new contract (depending on money)
Adam Clayton - a new contract, he has the experience, but his age is a factor
Brad Kelly (not sure if he has an option of another year) - a new 1 year contract
Devante Rodney - new contract
Ethan Ebanks-Landell - new contract
Ian Henderson - his age is a factor, but I would give a new contract
Jimmy Keohane - a new contract (he can operate in a number of positions)
Kyron Gordon - I expect him to be offered a contract
Max Taylor - freed
Tyrese Sinclair - a new contract, but he could get better offers elsewhere
Michael Afuye (option for another year) - free transfer

Loans to return to parent clubs:

Cian Hayes (Fleetwood) - I would like him to sign, but I would expect him to get better offers.
Jacob Chapman (Huddersfield) - if he is a free transfer, offer him a contract
Tiernan Brooks (Notts County) -
D'Mani Mellor (Wycombe) - I would not be surprised, if he signs for the Dale in the summer.
Finlay Armstrong (Fleetwood) - If he is a free transfer, I would sign him.
Sam Mather (Manchester United) - season long loan (if possible)
Sam Murray (Manchester United) -
Dan Sassi - If he is free, would McNulty sign him?

If the finances are good enough and based on the predictions above, we will need to sign a GK, possibly 2 CD's, a winger and a striker.

I think looking at that, I'd be offering contracts to Keohane and possibly Gordon and letting the rest go. I'd also be trying to get Uchegbulam off the books.

EEL hasn't redeemed himself from last season for me, I'd expect him to be better than he's been playing at this level. As much as I like Rodney and feel for him, in a brutal world we can't be carrying a player who might miss over half the season again, as good as he can be. Clayton has been okay when he's played but I feel there might be better and cheaper options, same with Sinclair.

Hayes won't be coming back, a move higher up the pyramid for him.

I'm not expecting to go up next season, but I'd like to think going into the season after we won't see as much change to the squad as we've seen for the past 5/6 years.

I’d be offering contracts to the following:

Keohane - really underrated player, and his versatility is so important. Doesn’t seem to be getting worse with age, either.
EEL - I think he’s done well this year but I imagine he’s one of the highest earners. If we can come to a compromise I’d like him to stay.
Sinclair - still an excellent option at this level.
Rodney - tough one. Brilliant when fit, but can we have faith that his illness is behind him? If he proves his health I imagine he’ll have offers from league clubs, but I’d hope he’d show us the same loyalty we’ve shown him this season.

I think Mellor’s out of contract in summer and, like ND said, I can imagine him ending up here. I’d definitely be willing to give him a chance on a 1-year deal.

None of the other loan players I’d be looking to keep (Hayes excepted, of course).

Would try and get rid of Jez. Offers nowhere near enough.

Offer deals:

Rodney - Even with his illness/injuries. Still a massive threat when fit.
John
EEL - Only 31. Not easy to replace with similar experience.
Jimmy K
Sinclair

I think Jim will keep Kyron Gordon but I'm struggling to see why so far.

I’d be looking to keep Gordon, he’s solved a problem position for us and allowed us to get more out Jimmy. For someone who had played little football he slotted in really well.

Anyone got any info on potential talent in the Academy?

Even one player catching the First Team would be a good do in these trying times.

Good that the new owners intend to develop this source.

I agree with a lot of the above.
Sadly I think that this may be Clayton's last season. That's a shame because he contributed a great deal before his injury but only seems to be a bit player since his return.
And he's presumably on a decent wage.
I wonder if he could be a recruit to the coaching set-up if he's got his badges and also sign him as a squad player? He's obviously on the same wavelength as BJ and has a wealth of experience.
SAJ has to be offered another contract although is he another one still on FL money?
It would be nice to think that EEL and Cameron John could be persuaded to stay but money could well be the stumbling block. Even if a FL club didn't come in for them there are other non-league teams with far bigger budgets.
There's a big decision to made about the goalkeeping position as well.
Sign another loan player with Kelly as back-up? Sign someone permanently?
Give Kelly a go as a cheaper option?

From Below i would keep Clayton if fit and Rodney and Sinclair if they accepted wages inside what will be a new budget and considerably less money.

Only two others Keohane and Gordon to be offered new deals.

The club needs a shake up off and on the pitch lets have a summer bringing in quite a few new faces and see where we go from there.

Hendo is a debate on his own... If he can be found a role as player / striker coach and is generally a positive influence then that would be a huge decision for Big Jim.

Adam Clayton
Brad Kelly (not sure if he has an option of another year)
Devante Rodney
Cameron John
Ethan Ebanks-Landell
Ian Henderson
Jimmy Keohane
Kyron Gordon
Max Taylor
Tyrese Sinclair
Michael Afuye (option for another year)

A couple of points that haven't been mentioned.

1. I think Tyrese Sinclair is still young enough that, if he's offered a new deal on the same or better terms than thus season, we would be entitled to a fee under the Bosman rules if he decides to move elsewhere.

2. Whilst the step up from the level he played at last season proved to be a bit much for Michael Afuye this season, he seems to be doing reasonably well at Guiseley on loan and may be worth looking at again. From what I saw early this season he couldn't be faulted for effort and application, even if he wasn't then ready for Conference National level.
