Ashes thread 17:11 - Jul 15 with 108748 views | johnhoop | Now that the World Cup’s done and dusted we can turn our attention to the next major event. For me the most interesting questions about team selection are; 1) Do we open with Jason Roy? For me it’s a no brainer. I know all the arguments against- he doesn’t even open for Surrey, he struggles against the moving ball etc- but I feel that he’s in such good form and the alternatives are so mediocre that it would be silly not to. If he does come off he could give us control of the game in the first couple of hours. Him and Rory Burns for me. 2) Now that Jofra Archer has to have a place in the side, who are the other two quick bowlers going to be. If fit I guess Anderson has to play and I would give the third spot to Woakes but this means no place for Stuart Broad and the 90 mph+ Mark Wood. 3) Which spinner to go with - Ali or Rashid? Ali’s batting form seems to have dipped but it’s still not an easy decision to make. Any thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken I believe there's 3 South Africans and 1 Pakistani in the current Australian cricket team. It's nothing new. Australia’s first-ever Test XI, who played England at the MCG in 1877, featured six players who were born overseas. They were the English-born quartet of Charles Bannerman, John Hodges, Tom Kendall and William Midwinter, along with Tom Horan (Ireland) and Bransby Cooper (India).

The way that the Aussies were farting around and cocking it up, with some assistance from the umpires, I wonder how many we actually could have chased down had we needed to? Leach hadn't got going by the time it was over - he was just warming up. Old Trafford will be crazy - I just hope that the weather in early September gives us a chance. Can't see us making too many changes as we need to win the game or at least not lose it, which is pretty much the same thing these days, weather permitting. Anderson or Curran for Woakes is an obvious change - the batting will be a problem whoever we pick, but the same goes for Oz. I'd go for the one change and shuffle the batting order. Stokes will end up at 3 or 4 at this rate.

That's the most amazing century and finish to a game I've ever seen and that's what everyone outside Australia will be talking about and indeed the more fair minded within. I doubt we'll ever see the like again. Its one thing doing what Stokes did if building a big lead and well on top, but to play the way he did given the circumstances was unbelievable. To hang in the evening before virtually without scoring under huge pressure because that is what was required at the time. To then hit that many sixes over a spread field designed to stop him doing exactly that when he needed to attack. Some of those shots were ridiculous and he deserved every ounce of luck he got and more. He totally rattled the Aussies who love to brag about how mentally tough they think they are. They are just as vulnerable to pressure as anyone else. If test cricket was always that good there would be no problem promoting the game. Unfortunately it isn't.

Fair point but as far as I'm concerned there are 11 Brits in the England team and 11 Aussies in the Australia team. I mean: Joffra Archer has a British dad, Ben Stokes has a New Zealand dad - they can't both be foreign can they? As for place of birth - my mum was born in the Punjab, my older brothers in Hong Kong, I was born (gulp) south of the river - are we different nationalities? It's modern world, people move around, marry into other nations, it's all good. I imagine all these guys have a bit of love for all their backgrounds but so long as sport is played between countries they have to choose just one - let 'em.

On a point of order, it's the England and Wales cricket team, so Archer and Stokes are technically speaking as Welsh as they are English, surely, if they are claiming Britishness? If the Welsh were to win the Rugby World Cup then they could claim to have won two World Cups in one year, as of course could England. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Does that mean you’d persist with Roy opening the batting?. As you can see from the post I made at the start of this thread I was all in favour of bringing him into the Test team after the world cup but I don’t see how they can persist with the experiment any longer after three test matches with a top score of 28 and an average in single figures. It’s a shame because on the harder, quicker wickets of Australia and probably South Africa it might well have worked so I’d hate to see them give up on him altogether but if we are to regain the Ashes I think we need a different opener, with Roy dropping down the order or missing out altogether. Who this should be I don’t really know but the selections are so conservative that I wouldn’t be surprised if they name an unchanged team anyway.

If there was pitch to suit Roy, then OT is it. I'd be tempted to stick with him, not sure what the options are in any case.

I wouldn't open with him no, but I'd probably keep him. As Alec Stewart said on the debate the other day, it's down to his mental state. If he's shot then you have to drop him - same might be true of Buttler even. However, if they're all OK then I'd drop him down and either open with Denly or Bairstow. It seems unfair to throw a rookie to the lions at this stage - these guys can f*cking bowl at us and this is no place to learn the ropes of test cricket.

I’ve heard the Aussies are crying like spoilt brats over losing that test. I’ve lived in Australia when I was on a working holiday back in the day. Bloody hell, do they whinge when things don’t go their way. I’ll say one thing, if the boot was on the other foot, and Australia needed 359 to win, and 79 off the final wicket, and Steve Smith did a Ben Stokes, we’d obviously be gutted, but we’d give Steve Smith and his team credit. We wouldn’t be crying about dodgy umpires. You never know, it might be your turn next.

Australians or even naturalised Australians are fine ones to be moaning about dodgy or biased umpires. Six test matches England played in 1970/71 in the Ashes series and didn't get a single LBW decision. In spite of this, we managed to win the series. This still rankles with Bob Willis 48 years later as he brought it up on one of the Ashes Debate programmes during the last test.

Slight over-reaction there, Snipper. Is there something you're feeling defensive about? Now, has the third umpire been replaced, too?

So there’s no whinging about the umpires at all? They gave bad decisions to both sides. Tim Paine is a weak link in your side. He doesn’t offer much at all. Alex Carey who kept wicket in the World Cup would add so much more imo. He’s a major threat with the bat too. Is there a clamour over there to get Steve Smith back as captain?

Main commentary about umpires is how generally hopeless they’ve been (for both sides) and ruining the game for both sides. There’s disappointment for sure but we have no one to blame but ourselves for losing from the position we were in. Good on Ben Stokes, it was a great feat of concentration and determination. Only 1-1 and still anyone’s series and yes, we’re happy to get Smithy back but there’s a lot of worry here that he’s still not right and is potentially putting himself at risk.

Well he’ll certainly have a lot of short pitched deliveries to deal with. We should be stronger in the bowling department if Jimmy Anderson comes back. It’ll weaken our batting lineup though, but you lot have worked out that Woakes doesn’t like the short ball, so maybe not. Hopefully these next two will be as exciting.

There's different types of Aussies when it comes to cricket but all seem to share this absolute desperation to beat England. It seems ingrained from childhood. Even my very mild mannered and lovely in laws won't talk about it if England are going well but its the first topic of conversation if the Aussies are winning. Its just not as important to us and that's partly because it still a bit exclusive there. Only read an article yesterday about how can they harness the Stokes moment and get more kids playing the game. The Aussie media love to portray England as a cricket obsessed nation in despair when they are winning but the UK's sporting passion largely resides with football and most have only a passing interest in cricket, if that. One country has a cricket ground that holds 100,000, the other a largest capacity of 30,000, that about suns it up. I was shocked how much they care about the ashes when I first came to live here. I'd never really thought of it as any different to playing any other country before I emigrated. Back then they were utterly dominant too so 2005 was hugely enjoyable in ending that period. The subsequent wins have also been good, especially when we tonked them in 2010/11 (3 innings defeats for Australia at home and a declaration in the drawn game at 517/1 I think it was - even the worst England sides never managed that) down here, but 2005 was the one for me. You only have to look at some of the replies every time the barmy army posts on facebook etc to see a reasonable chunk of them are bitter, racist bogans wracked with reverse snobbery and lack of basic grammar skills. I've been to matches here and some of the racist comments you hear are embarrassing. Not only England but India, Sri Lanka etc all cop it. We have the same type of people of course but they are to be found screaming about brexit or football instead. The barmy army are full of original and witty banter whereas these morons are very much the "oi, oi, oi" and "you are a w@nker" level of chanting inventiveness. The majority are fine and its the usual banter. When you explain to them that the English just don't have the same interest on the whole they are shocked because they are led to believe we are for more into it than the reality. Its still likely Aus will retain the urn as they only need one win from two games and Smith the immovable will be back. Stokes though has already provided the highlight of the series and of any series I have seen.
