Summer Transfers 10:49 - May 30 with 138453 viewsderbyhoop

There's always lots of speculation, 90% generated by agents. Might be good to have 1 thread.

I don't understand the speculation that has linked us with Adam Matthews from Sunderland, Adam Maher from AZ Alkmaar and Liam Kelly from Livingstone.
Matthews is a RB where we have Furlong, Rangel and Kakay
Maher is a midfielder where, even if Freeman goes, we're not short of options.
Kelly is a keeper. We have Lumley, Ingram and Dieng, unless the latter goes to Glasgow Rangers.

Why are after loaning young players from other clubs , i thought we were trying to develop our own youngsters!

They wouldn't be loans Jon.

We do need another left back as we can't go into the season with only Manning.

If Dieng is going, which appears likely, we also need a goalkeeper as lumley needs competition.

£50k for two players is not exactly an excessive amount!

McIntyre endorsing this story on Twitter. Not sure GK is a problem unless Lumley's headed out, which I guess would be a success for the club if its for decent money. Obviously we need a full back, don't know a lot about Wallace personally. I don't have an issue with either of the players particularly, but the fact they've both worked with Warburton before is a bit of an issue for me- is this evidence the club is STILL just going with the whims of whichever manager we happened to have appointed at that time? Is it just coincidence and these were Les/Penrice picks? Who knows.

Read up a bit on both players. Lee Wallace is obviously not a spring chicken but is very experienced and is still a fans favorite at Rangers, so hopefully another Hill, Dunne, Nelson type. I think that we will have Dieng go to Rangers and Ingram didn't impress, so we need competition for Joe.

i think you'd struggle to find a manager who wouldn't bring in a player or two he's had before. That's pretty standard anywhere. Bit harsh to call it a 'whim' (if it happens). Les has always said they'll always look at players a manager wants, and of course it's possible we have looked at these players. Les and Ramsey were at at least one Rangers game last year so may well have seen Wallace.

Bare bones.

But whats the deal with this Wallace? 8 league appearances in 2 seasons doesn't sound promising. Is the bloke knackered or do they just not like him?

They just don't like him, I'd guess (from Wikipedia):

In September 2017, Wallace sustained a double hernia injury during a match against Partick Thistle.[29] Initially ruled out for a few months, he did not play again in the 2017—18 season.[30] Following a 4—0 defeat by Celtic in the 2017—18 Scottish Cup semi-finals, Wallace and teammate Kenny Miller were suspended by Rangers due to an alleged altercation with manager Graeme Murty.[31] After an internal investigation Wallace was fined four weeks' wages by Rangers, the maximum amount permitted.[32]
Wallace returned to the Rangers squad for pre-season activities in June 2018.[30] New manager Steven Gerrard said that he hoped the dispute would be resolved, and that Wallace would fully recover from his long-term injury.[30] At the outset of the campaign, he was replaced as club captain by James Tavernier.[33] In early September, he was not included in the Rangers squad for the 2018—19 UEFA Europa League group stage;[34] two days later, it was announced that he and Kenny Miller had won an appeal at a SPFL tribunal against the disciplinary action taken against them five months earlier, with the expectation they would make a financial claim against the club for the fines imposed.[35][36] He would go on to make 3 substitute appearances in the 2018—19 season, getting a great reception from the Rangers supporters.

He had a bad injury and then him and Kenny Miller had a fall out with Murty. But the Rangers fans seem to back the players in whatever happened and they love Wallace. He has been sought by several Championship sides.

The harshness comes as a kneejerk result of the sweeping narratives retrospectively imposed on last season's events. When McClaren wanted Martin and Thorne and experience in the side it was all a classic QPR dinosaur shambles letting a manager gone rogue dictate strategy and invalidate the DoF structure. Norwich came 1st being all continental so there's your proof - meanwhile Sheff Utd finish 2nd doing the exact opposite with Wilder running the whole show. There's no de facto right or wrong way to do things, it's just a question of minimising risk.

im not rly impressed with us signing a 31 yr old fullback whose hardly played for the last two years

having said that, in the last two years, we've lost and will lose players like onouha, smithies, freeman, bidwell, mackie, perch, etc who were experienced pros who brought stability and leadership to the dressing room.

who are our experienced leaders next year on the pitch? mass (who seems pretty quiet), leistner (whose first language isnt english), scowen (whose a maniac)...? maybe rangel and smith, but im not sure how much playing time they'll get

we do need some experienced heads to guide the likes of eze bright smyth chair manning etc.... im happy bringing in players who have played at a high level and won things... but im not sure this is the one

This sounds very plausible, so its either

a) lazy journalism or
b) lazy recruitment

Of course, they could happen and could be great signings, but its probably a).

Wallace could be a shrewd addition or he could be a past it crock. Rangers fans seem not to know either themselves, though with hardly a bad word to say about him.

Kelly is difficult. Some rave reviews around but I don't really believe in having keepers in direct competition around, especially at his and Lumley's age. I don't think Lumley's earned himself a move anywhere just yet, and it's hard to imagine Kelly signing without some first team assurances. He may well be a bargain - but it will be a false one if it ends up hampering Lumley's development. We've seen first hand that managing several keepers with potential is full of pitfalls and doesn't quite work out the way you imagine with a smooth production line one after another. This is one where a DoF earns his corn seeing the bigger picture.

so recruitment is only good if you sign a player you haven't heard of before, rather than just using the knowledge you've built up from working in the game? Any knowledge you do have should be ignored, because that's lazy?

Re. Wallace, how shrewd will depend on the contract type. Free transfer on a sensible wage on a 12 month contract with an option for the club to extend by a year would make it a risk well worth taking.

Guess we'll see, if anything materializes.

Lest we forget that Paddy Kenny hadn't played for a year either.

If there's a good player out there who you can purchase at a cut price (£50k in this case) then you get him.
If the scouts feel he's better than Ingram, Dieng and The Pole then it's a no brainer for me

Like I said, if it happens they might be great signings. We all remember Warnock bringing in hill and Derry. But I do think it could be called lazy recruitment.
I'd love us to have a system in place, with a dof and scouts identifying both the squad's needs and possible targets, then following their progress over a number of seasons and monitoring their availability. That's how to do it. And how we say we're doing it.
But if we're still in fact letting the latest new manager open the contacts on his phone and say 'I know a couple of lads who could do a job for us', then I'd say that was lazy. And a bigger gamble than we need take.
Might work? Of course it might. Using the latest manager's knowledge and experience? Sure, it sounds OK. But its still a quick fix and more likely to cause long-term grief than doing it the right way. That's how we ended up with a squad full of ex-managers' picks.

It sounds like Kelly, if he signs, won't cost a fortune. Neither in transfer fees nor wages.
Wallace is an option in a position where we are desperately short.

The concerns are:-
with Kelly, what happens to Lumley, Ingram and Dieng? We don't need 4 keepers of a broadly similar age. Which ones will be shipped out?
With Wallace - he is 31, had serious injury and hasn't played much in the last 2 seasons. Are we bringing in a crock or a Clint Hill?

Or -perhaps the new manager has sat down with Les etc and discussed possible signings and agreed on a few names that might be decent for the squad next season?

I’m happy that we appear to be looking in Scotland there are some gems, I wouldn’t mind us taking a punt on rob lees son Olly and jake mulraney from hearts

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

We made contact with Wallace two weeks ago. Don't think he's good enough to be 1st choice Championship full-back anymore, but a decent enough squad player as wages will be minimal

I would be sticking with Lumley as first choice GK, developing him over the next few seasons. However - given the financial position of the Club - if we can get say £1.5m+ for Lumley and replace him with Kelly for £50k then it's something we probably have to do.

Not really getting the negativity toaward signing Kelly. Hes a year younger than Lumley and is pretty much availble on a free (£50k). Perhaps the club think he has more potential and will be worth more than Lumley in the future. If we were signing a 35 year old to take jis place I'd understand the comments but thats not the case.

Kenny was off a drugs ban, Wallace has had fitness issues beyond whatever the politics keeping him out of the team were. To what extent is you would pray what our medical team will assess.

As to your second point, the squad is littered with potential and if buts and maybes that have rarely been consistently developed in a coherent system. Squad bloat can be counter-productive. Slightly different for keepers perhaps but as I say we've been down this route before with Ingram - and if Kelly's now better than him one might argue that that's partly of our own doing.

Signing an experienced keeper explicitly as backup (and possibly as additional coach) with Lumley as undisputed #1 makes more sense to me at this point. Better to develop one properly than muddle two.

Rangel is 37 this November, and a lot of people wanted him re signed this summer, so Wallace is just a kid in comparison. Dieng and Ingram are never going to make it at this club and for their own sakes need to go.
