A Pretty Big Wake Up Call... 17:56 - Nov 26 with 6234 views | _ | It will be interesting to see what transpires after that chastising defeat against Norwich. I wasn't confident but I didn't expect to be out of it after half hour. I know there are some on here that feel Potter is above criticism and whilst I love what he's doing overall and we're more than heading in the right direction after a difficult period, I still wonder as to some of his decisions. Grimes at left back was cruelly exposed on Saturday and I feel it's an experiment that needs nipping in the bud or worse will still to come. For their first goal he's on the ball in space near the touch line. He's got Rodon alongside him pointing to go back to Mulder. He ignores this and chips an aimless ball upfield. It's won in the air and ends up with one of theirs facing our goal. It took 6 seconds from the point Grimes chipped it upfield to when Pukki receives it bearing down on the right hand side of our goal. Grimes does not have the instinct to look along the back four and keep in shape. He was caught somewhat ballwatching while it ended up past him and them scoring. The third goal. How the fack we got caught so out of shape from a long punt down field from their centre half I don't know. You had a shape as follows.... --------------------------------- VdH ---------------------- Rodon ----------------------------- Grimes With Grimes going up for the challenge. This is our left back!! Why VdH and Rodon had gone on wanders I don't know and why Grimes had hooked so far over, again, no idea. But this left a gaping hole down our left and once the ball was flicked down, it was an easy pass to someone with all the room in the world. Connor, hopefully can stop playing the Billy big bollocks now his contract is signed as he was painfully slow to get back to our far post for that third goal (and was roasted for their fourth) but the damage was done with the nonexistent shape or lack of organisation. The first half was down to Potter. I'm not going to apportion too much blame on Celina, although it was a big, big error that compounded a poor shift from our gaffer. I really didn't think left back was a position we needed to mess around with and I hope we can get Olsson playing regularly there and see Grimes moved back to midfield. At least give him a consistent run of games there. I haven't read Potters comments after the game so don't know if he's held his hands up or put it down to a steep learning curve. But for me, it was another example of needless tinkering. A caveat for the faint of heart. I'm not slagging our manager off I don't want him to fail and I'm not criticising him for the sake of it. I'm just saying it as I saw it on Saturday. Let's hope he can sort this out and we learn in time for the Baggies.

A Pretty Big Wake Up Call... on 00:03 - Nov 27 by _ | I've just watched the game back and I have to agree. They were more than clinical but they had the chance to be on the back of our mistakes. Grimes really stood out second half in midfield. Olsson was solid and offered more than a threat going forward so they have to be in those positions Wednesday. Bony was rusty as but that will come with him and watching it back his fitness seemed remarkably good. Mcburnie spread some great cross field balls and James was dangerous here and there although he does need to measure his crosses on times. He can be a bit guilty of getting across no matter what, although we've had a goal or two from this already. Side I wouldn't object to for West Brom: -------------------- Mulder ------------------- Naughton -- VdH ---- Rodon --- Olsson ---------- Grimes -------- Fulton ----------- James ---------- Celina ------- McBurnie ------------------ W. Bony ------------------ Give Bony more minutes from the start with Mcburnie playing off him down the left coming in. I think that can work. Roberts to rest it out and bring him back down to earth a bit. Keep a solid back five with the old guard full backs although I wouldn't be surprised to see Nordvelt or Carter Vickers in. James was a little bit hit and miss on Saturday but I'd play him again, just, and Celina needs to make up for his mistake. He should play at 10. Options from the bench: Fer, Roberts, McKay and hopefully Montero. This side will also keep an element of continuity - which we could do with. |
James is better on the left and hasn't looked at all happy on the right. I'd be more tempted to play McKay on the right and sacrifice Celina (to start with) and have McBurnie and Bony up front. Too many times we get forward and there's nobody in the box, McBurnie goes chasing the ball....and here's the thing, I love the work rate but he can't go missing from the striker position when he's the only striker on the pitch, working hard is great but positional discipline is needed. So maybe having two strikers on will solve that. It'll give Wilf a chance to get minutes in and we can switch him out for Celina and go back to 4231 if needs be.

A Pretty Big Wake Up Call... on 08:09 - Nov 27 by Thornburyswan | You are correct on the ages but Nauts, VDH & Fer aside they lack real tough match experience & match craft - we looked ok until we gifted them the first two goals & apart from a reasonable 15/20 mins around HT we never looked capable of getting back into the game. Suspect the Norwich side is no older, may even be younger, but they looked well organised & confident and grew strongly into the game after the own goal. |
But that's what goals and confidence does to you. See our QPR game for that If you're going to literally gift wrap 3 goals for the opposition expect them to play with a certain aplomb. Apart from the glaring errors there wasn't a lot in the game

Got to agree, we gifted them a two goal start, the drop in our confidence and the huge boost to them was obvious. We didn't start to badly having 65% possession at half time and finished with more possession, more shots and more corners. It was Norwich's killer instinct that made the difference, they took their chances whereas all too often we don't. Scoring is a concern for us, we need to find our touch.

I would say we gifted them the 3rd goal too by our failure to clear our collective head in the aftermath of the kick-in-the bollux horror show of their 2nd goal. The first goal was completely against the run of play and I think it was only the 3rd time Norwich had been in our half while in possession of the ball. It was still a pretty even game until the disastrous 2nd goal and our players were clearly shell-shocked at what they'd just seen and took far too long to clear their heads during which time Norwich scored their 3rd and although the remaining 53 minutes of the game effectively finished 1-1, we never really got back to anywhere near the way we had played for the first 16 minutes.

That first goal came, after the Norwich manager called over one of his players and must have told him for the team to play more of the long ball out of defence. As they were putting to much pressure on themselves by playing the short game in their third of the pitch Within 3-4 minutes of that instruction the ball was in the back of the Swansea net Very impressed that a manager saw what was creating problems and did something about it straight away Something that’s still lacking in Swansea

You are illegally streaming 3pm games - and effectively 'robbing' from Swansea City. And bragging about it... Asoro is struggling - I knew you would delight in this. The difference - I hope the 19yr old kid settles down & turns out to be a good player for us. Either way £2m is no huge gamble. I have no idea what the feck you are on about regarding Wigan.

A Pretty Big Wake Up Call... on 21:30 - Nov 26 by _ | And as for the squad competing this season. We have and we will. We'll be in the mix come the end and should be in the top 6 now. We let ourselves down Saturday and there's also a big argument Potter isn't utilising our best squad. Dyer and Routs could still do a job especially after a few games but they're not getting a look in. Meanwhile we play a right back in right midfield, a centre mid at left back and we change the goalkeeper for no real obvious reason. There must be some method to his madness but on occasion it just looks, well, what it is really, mad. You've leapt on this conclusion early doors that we're not going for gold this season and you want to make excuses at every possible junction to express that view. We'll see how it pans out. |
Dyer and Routledge are not wanted here, he said so himself to one of the guys on this site that they are trying to move him on. We are playing a central midfielder at left back because Ollson is struggling with his fitness, and Grimes has played well there on the whole apart from Saturday. Jordi isn’t ready at the moment by the looks. Potter explained why he changed the keeper, you said he was lying, but when he said he chose to get rid of Fede, you preached about him being honest in the press because it suited your stance on sticking up for the club. We’re not going for gold this season, the yanks said as much when they said it would be a “long road back”. It’s not my conclusion, it’s what they have said. [Post edited 27 Nov 2018 16:59]

I said Potter was lying? Did I? I must have missed that. I'm not sure what you're talking about to be honest. I think Potter is, let's say, diplomatic, in the press conferences but it's been clear who his number 1 was. With regards being honest about Fede, it's a completely different kettle of fish. He doesn't have to be diplomatic here, he can say it as it is as he's not going to care about knocking an ex player's cconfidence. Dyer and Routs are both solid, honest professionals and whilst we're paying them we should be unitising them. The fact we aren't is pretty pathetic. With Olsson. I don't think it's struggling with his fitness so much, I think it's as much tactical as anything else. Olsson has picked up a knock here and there, Villa wasn't it? But he's been fit plenty of times when Grimes has played there. And with regards to Grimes playing well there, yes, I guess so, he's not exactly set the world alight there though and I don't think he's played a part in too many goals or assists from that position. There's been no tangible difference going forward with Grimes or Olsson there. But he's been missed in the centre I feel.

He’s basically said he agrees and it’s because Phil has banned people. To be honest, I don’t care why it’s better or who posts and who doesn’t. I just like threads that get into the nitty gritty of how the team is playing, what’s going well, what’s not and what changes people would make for the next game etc.

And we're steadily rousing. Saturday was a microcosm of our season so far. Glimpses of confident progressive possession based - on-brand, especially the totally dominant first 15mins. I thought: we're going to smash this today. Then some blunders etc. 2nd half similar story after a clever rejig. Cant wait for tomorrow's instalment on this journey of learning, development and enjoyment. Genuinely intriguing stuff

But by playing Dyer and Routs he would be leaving out players who are in the long term plans here. James, Mackay, Asoro even Celina for that matter if Routs covers at 10. I don't see the problem with having them on the bench, but maybe it is part due to appearance bonuses etc? We have no idea. I said previously Grimes was played there as he is better on the ball than Ollson and left and right backs are very important when trying to play a possession based game. It did work, but he seems to have been found out big time now though, so I agree, it's probably time to knock it on the head. I haven't been impressed with Ollson for a while though, and I'm hoping this Jordi can follow up his promising debut for the u23s, not sure if he's played any more minutes, but if so would be interested to hear off someone like Jasper on how he did (or anyone else who watches the u23s for that matter). Agree with you but we struggle to work the opposition goalkeeper so until Potter improves that we will always be at risk of a mistake/opposition goals regardless of our possession stats. Our final third strategy looks too haphazard to me - Socks put's a shift in but gets easily drawn wide & so far no-one else appears to make a run into the box to offer a threat so we end up playing backwards/sideways giving the opposition plenty of time to re-set. We had, unusually for us, a definite height advantage on Saturday particularly at set pieces with VDH, Rodon, Fer & Fulton joining Bony but our delivery was poor.
