Congratulations France, and well done Croatia for reaching the final 18:02 - Jul 15 with 8151 viewsLeonWasGod

It would have been very easy for a country of a few million to just roll over in bitterness and then blame their failure on larger neighbours. Or to borrow players from their larger neighbours and try to claim them as their own.

But they d Iared to believe, took matters into their own hands rather than play the victim and deserved to reach the final.

I'm amazed that the VAR people in their secluded room thought that it was a penalty, even in slow mo - which they must have done to alert the ref. They should also watch the footage at full speed (for handballs only).

The VAR people left it all to the ref.. but you are correct.. there's no clarification on how this system is supposed to work.

It's like the government's road to hell initative.

Anyone got any ideas why VAR wasn't used to pick up Pogba being offside for the first goal?

It was an own goal and Vida was goal side of him.

Ref got the penalty correct.
Free kick was a bit of a dive but he was caught after the ball had gone.
In the premier league we'd have had both those decisions against us 99 times out of 100.

All too often slo-mo makes an event look worse than it was. From the studio feed (BBC) we saw more and better feeds of the action. The feeds that the ref saw were unflattering at best and corrupt at worst.

In the end though the French were (very) marginally better (counter-attack) but was that a result of getting the decisions?

Disclaimer. As soon as the Germans wobbled I said to the wife that this World Cup was nailed on French (she agreed - Northbank girl) but I suspect that this same feeling was FIFA's and they carried that thought through to the decision making.

It's the interpretation of rules..

The ref can interpret whatever he sees fit.

The ball was half a yard from contact at 70 miles per hour.

How can the ref "interpret" deliberate hand ball.

But this is what football has been like for years.

If it hits the hand.. it's either hand ball or not.

The same with the dubious "clear goal scoring opportunity" bollocks.. ah f*ck this I'm going to rant on my own over meaningless bollocks

That was some sloppy final..France's first 2 goals were..unnecessary. Clumsiness from the Croats. Some might say controversial referee decisions etc but imo it was a penalty. Most of penalties aren't deliberate and that's one of them.

Hugo Lloris's mistake in the 2nd goal wow..if his team wasn't already winning by 3 goals he should have sought asylum in Russia and never came home.

Sloppy, Anti-climactic and predictable (France were favourite to win the WC from the start)

Feel bad for the Croatians but they've done great. They should raise their heads with pride really. The French clearly weren't better. Nor worse for that matter. But Croatia deserved to win it.

Great WC. It'll be missed.

It was a "great" World Cup... maybe not a constant football-fest but full of action, drama, and "weaker" nations giving it a go,

To those slagging off VAR...it's the first contact with the enemy (fans), give it time to develop and then decide.

The ref got the penalty decision correct live but it was something that looked terrible on replay.

You cannot tell me that was DELIBERATE handling of the ball when Perisic isnt even expecting to make contact with the ball. It only happened because Umtiti wiffed on the ball. And dont give me this "arm in an unnatural position" bullsh!t - he was jumping right next to Umtiti and using his arms for balance. You cannot expect defenders to always have both arms behind their back! Its a different game if it stays 1-1.

Twitter says ... you know about ‘claiming players as your own’, even countries of circa 60 million do it.

‘Kane's father was born in Ireland. Dier grew up in Portugal. Sterling was born in Jamaica. Lingard's grandparents came from Saint Vincent. Alli's father is from Nigeria’....
They represent England. UKIP don't.’

Suck it up .....😂

If they are eligible, then the countries will pick them.
Nothing wrong with that, they are fecking eligible after all.

I'm still struggling to understand how Vinnie Jones played for Wales.

However he did learn the anthem. Something that they all should do.

I agree. Perhaps now all these silly female feature writers in the Sunday supplements will leave football alone for a while. Let it go back to the back pages where it is understood. England were deficient - glaringly obviously so. If England had had a player like Modric, Couthino, Hazard, de Bruyne, etc etc, instead of having a huge hole where the midfield should be, then all this vainglorious whining about "It's coming home" might have had some substance. As a last resort they could have taken Wiltshire and Shelvey - not perfect but at least they have some creativity. As it was, they showed they are nowhere near yet being a World Cup contender.

Congratulations to France! Hugely talented young team that will win many more titles I'm sure. But huge commiserations to Croatia - absolutely brilliant display. You can hold your heads high. Luka Modric is a little gem of a player. Always available to take and make pass, never wastes the ball, tidies up bad ball and links the whole team together, brilliant close control and superb acceleration when required. Anyway Rakitic, Peritic and all the other 'itches'! in the Croatia team showed real class and quality. This is a country of 4m people - just 1m bigger than Wales. Outstanding.

They tried to take Wiltshire but couldn’t find a big enough plane.

Thing is though, when the VAR people say to the ref "you might want to have another look", what they're really saying is "we think you got it wrong". And that puts a lot of pressure on the ref to go against however many VAR people there are.

My first world cup as a kid was Argentina 78.

It was brilliant, England hadn't qualified, so all the talk and punditry was about the football.

I remember before Italy's first game Mick Channon saying they would be negative and boring. Then watching Rossi, causio, bettega, scirea and antognoni play platini's France off the park with outstanding attacking football.

Feel for Luka Modric. His life hasn't been easy. Having to escape the Serbs at a young age. Some of his family members were in fact executed for speaking up against the oppression. He lived in terrible poverty until he was able to make something out of himself. Best Midfielder since Zidane. Seems like a great, humble human being as well.

Exactly. When the free kick's taken, Pogba looks like he's in an offside position (by a chest, I reckon). The only question is whether he got involved in the play. He certainly challenged for the ball.

If VAR cannot see this fairly obvious case of offside in a World Cup final, then it's clearly got a long way to go! By the way, Pogba attempts to reach the ball, and is directly in line with the keeper.

England fans must be delighted with France winning the world cup

The closest neighbours for many Englishmen and a country that once conquered them and imposed their laws and customs on them. They must have all been cheering for France. Why wouldn't they?
