Lagoon officially binned 18:09 - Jun 25 with 15448 views | Jonathans_coat | Well there’s another kick in the nads for Swansea. Another broken manifesto promise. Just waiting for them to pull out of the “city deal” now. They’ll announce the cull of the firstborn next week, just after the plague of locusts they’ve got planned! By the way, waiting until the day of the Heathrow 3rd runway debate, to try to bury it under “bigger news” is so brazen it’s f*****g disgraceful. Shows exactly what they think of us.

We've had decades of this downhill sh#t ever since Thatcher arrived on the scene onto the present day! Anyone with common sense must be seriously worried for their children's, grandchildren's and great grandchildren's future(s). Wales is turning into an economic backwater with infrastructure belonging to the last century! Outside of the public sector there is next to little or nothing at all for a country declining at a rate fuelled by neglect/economic sabotage/regional bias that should be labelled as 'Project-New-Albania'. F#ck what will Wales be like in another twenty years time? It's frightening!

I fear with no rail electrification to Swansea that Brit Nats parties like Labour and the Conservatives will try and take Neath off the mainline to speed up travel between Paddington/Cardiff to Swansea.

Cardiff is / are doing very well. The rest of Wales isn't, the only people to blame are those elected to Cardiff "bay". Any money coming to Wales is being spent within 50 square miles of the Senedd and unless the entire system changes we'd better get used to it. Get rid of the Welsh Government and everyone involved in it.

So, on the back of no electrification and no lagoon somehow the Welsh government is still to blame. Christ, some thinking skills training is needed by some on this board.
Lagoon officially binned on 23:27 - Jun 27 with 2590 views | BytholWyn | To give some sort of idea of the opportunity that the UK government has declined to take consider this quote from the Wikipedia article on the Danish wind industry: The Danish wind turbine industry is the world's largest. Around 90% of the national output is exported, and Danish companies accounted for 38% of the world turbine market in 2003, when the industry employed some 20,000 people and had a turnover of around 3 billion euro. This is in spite of the fact that the UKs wind energy resource is greater than Denmark's. The reason the Danes are in such a dominant position is because they were early adopters of the technology and stole a march on competitors. That is the position we could be in Wales in relation to tidal power had the lagoon gone ahead. Typical short-term thinking from the Tories. No vision, just the same old politics of expediency geared to winning the next election. How the electorate (especially in Wales) can be so dumb as to buy into this time after time beggars belief.

What's the point in having a vote of no confidence in Cairns at the WAG, he's not a member there! Another cosmetic exercise from Plaid

It’s not wind power that is being proposed here though. I was reading yesterday that tidal power could be up to nine times more expensive to produce than wind power. Very expensive to construct with huge maintenance costs.

Wind power was very expensive at the outset - and it's only now that it's becoming so efficient that they're getting to the point where they need no subsidy: https://windeurope.org/newsroom/press-releases/worlds-first-offshore-wind-farm-w Looking at things in the short-term the competition with wind power is one of the factors that count against the lagoon. But the big picture here is that Wales and UK could be leading the world in a new technology and be reaping the benefits down the line, as the Danes are doing now e.g. the World's biggest, Danish built wind farm off the North Wales coast https://www.dailypost.co.uk/business/business-news/worlds-biggest-wind-turbines- It's quite ironic that as we're careering towards a hard Brexit, that the advocates of that madness aren't citing the opportunity to make the UK a world leader in tidal power.

WG offered funding and previously gave the ago on company money, despite the WG environment body not being able to grant a marine licence because the scheme was flawed from day one. That's either stupidity or a political game. If tidal power had realistic potential I think a multinational would have got behind the scheme, not Mark Shorrock the smoothie maker.

Well said. It's all about people knowing the price of everything and value of nothing. Short-term thinking at it's finest. Without wanting to politicise this, I presume there's an element of Tory anti-environmentalism going on here too. We went through this exact same thing with the biofuels industry. The UK was at the forefront globally at the back end of the 00s, but lack of clarity on government policy from the Coalition onwards effectively stalled the industry here and saw our promising, growing companies move to the US. I believe our position as a leader in wind power has slipped too. And now we're in danger of the same thing happening for tidal. It's no good Brexiters' repeating the mantra of 'Global Britain' as long as we lack the policy and regulatory frameworks that allow emerging industries to flourish. We could get this right, of course, but evidence so far is to the contrary. Certainly for these elements of the environmental sector.

Wind power need a product, large numbers of turbines, Blades and the mounting pillars. Other than a small number of turbines, what exactly is this tidal power industry going to support? Concrete, fancy drawings, guesswork on environmental impact in a unique geographical area? One of these companies is £17M in debt already and they’ve physically done nothing, what’s this IP they talk of? Idiots wanting their piece of the picnic, even when the sandwiches have turds as fillings

‘Short term thinking at its finest’ As a political Luddite, would I be naive to assume that political parties don’t look much further afield than the next election? Short-term pain for long-term gain is no use to someone whose job depends on public votes, especially in the current economic climate. Or am I being too disingenuous and simplistic?

Lagoon officially binned on 15:16 - Sep 26 with 1863 views | DwightYorkeSuperstar | It's been nearly 3 months. Have any other cities stepped forward to offer their coastline for this project? I do not believe they have, but why could that be? Perhaps because no other city and its people are gullible and desperate enough to sacrifice their city's only redeeming quality just because someone made some nice looking pictures on photoshop and made a bunch of promises with no evidence to prove they could be met.
