I’ve been pretty non plussed about the Copa Mundial this year which is unusual as I’ve always loved it. Perhaps FIFA have contributed to my overall “fcuk it” view to the modern game, I’ve never felt so remote from a tournament Inger-Lund have been in. Part of me hopes it lives up to the scam it is with Russia being awarded 317 penalties in the group stages, empty stadiums with Escape To Victory dubbed crowd cheering noises all capped off with a plucky squad of kids winning it so rhino nose becomes Sir Gareth
Current questions for those buzzing about it or who simply know:-
1. Any good Apps for iPhone anyone come across? (Preferably free)
2. Can anyone recommend a Fantasy Competition for the tournament? I’ve been asked to run one at work; think the Sun used to do a simple one; no idea if they are as I haven’t bought a newspaper this decade.
3. Any players people recommend sticking in above / hidden jems????
4. What fixtures do we think are ones to make an effort to watch out of the current group stages? May have to organise work schedule and ensure a regular spot in The Leicester Arms on Warwick Street for any midweek afternoon games
5. What nation picks up the Jules Rimet this year for you? I’m thinking probably Germany but the last time they tried to conquer all the Russia issue didn’t work out well for them

I share your lack of interest Lblock. I will watch when it comes around but I still don't think we should be going to Russia or Qatar and think we should withdraw from FIFA until it reforms.
On a point of accuracy, it hasn't been the Jules Rimet since 1970. It was awarded to Brazil, permanently after three wins. It has since disappeared, I believe it was stolen and has never been recovered. The new 'trophy' doesn't have a name and is just referred to as the FIFA world cup.
Personally, I think the original trophy was a thing of beauty, "only 12 inches high and it's made of solid gold". Pleased it was that one which Bobby paraded around the old Wembley. Never felt the same with the new one and it's boring name.

We are playing France in the first match so expecting to get rogered. Socceroos coach is Bert Van Marwijk who coached Holland to the final in 2010 so I’m hoping we will be at least hard to beat.
If Luongo has a good Cup I reckon he’ll get snapped up so let’s hope he scores to raise the price a bit.
France are my pick to win this time and I think England might surprise as the expectations seem a lot lower than usual. England doing well is good for the game in general so I hope you go well.
It will be interesting to see how Brazil fare in the tournament. They ran away with the South America qualification group but several football writers from the region have said the standard of football has dropped and they were flattered by the final standings. If Belgium's outstanding individuals click as a team they can win the World Cup, similarly if France don't implode in the dressing room.

yours truly is going to the Belgium game , cant wait tbh I don't see a clear winner in this years world cup, all of the top teams have flaws , if we can get organised and hard to beat and nick a few games I can se us getting to the Qtr /Semi , as for Belgium they don't worry me at all , to many of the players play for themselves , and they have flattered to deceive the last few tournaments also Martinez cannot coach a backline to save his life , if you look at France, Argentina , Brazil ,they to have issues at the back , Germany will be what they normally are efficient and Spain are always decent , the hosts will scam their way to a QTR final and I expect a huge kick off with them and the jam rolls after what happened in 2012 (it could be England and Poland teaming up against the Russians if they meet in the last 16 ) dark horses for me are Nigeria & Egypt
And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

Got the old rose tinted specs on again, when it comes to a World Cup, but we really should have a relative stroll through this group and last 16 doesn't look difficult.
As such, we just need to galvanise ourselves for one big QF. Get past that and Southgate is going to come back a hero.

I can't wait personally, love the World Cup and even if it's a shithole like Russia I am still excited. The big names look good on paper with the likes of Belgium in the maybe pile, not including the teams that pop up and surprise you.
Even with all the players are so well known these days you still get the odd breakout star. Some of the kits are delicious too - the Germany away one I especially like.

So any Apps or Fantasy Leagues?
One or two eyebrows raised Roger Moore style at other nations squads - especially some of the Spanish omissions plus the Argies omission of Icardi
I will confess to a slight build in interest
No Icardi is mental. I know why - what with the Lopez stuff and the implications that arise cos Messi doesn't like him. But come on, he's the best striker they have.

But, as a counter argument, Icardi is almost entirely a 'Penalty box forward' in that he doesn't do anything except score (i know how stupid that reads back, but think inzaghi etc.)
Messi, Aguero, Dybala and Higuain are all more rounded and complete forwards.
Plus, as mentioned, they haven't fallen out with Messi, which helps.
Nainggolan not making the Belgium squad is insane, but him Radja and Martinez fell out years ago because Nainggolan smokes and parties a bit too hard. Absolute nonsense that it's tactical though, he's one of the best box to box midfielders in the world!

Then you have the argument that Radja's partying and smoking makes him a divisive character in the squad, and likely to upset the harmony, but from everything I've read he is a really popular member of that team. Plus it's not as if he is a Taarabt on the pitch - he works his bollocks off. Stinks of Martinez cutting off his nose to spite his face.
