Wish him all the best, great keeper and remember his debut well.

Awful news. One of the Dale legends in my view. Never let Dale down from the minute he made his unexpected debut and went on to have a good career between the sticks..

All the best Keith and I hope you come through it sooner, rather than later.

Will always remember him for that brilliant display at Palace which should have earned us a replay.

Awful news.

I interviewed him for TVOS when we played Bristol City two years ago and although he is only two months older than me, I was so nervous chatting on the phone to someone who I regarded as a hero and a legend when I was a teenager.

I have his contact details, so I might copy all the messages off here and send them to Keith to give him a boost on the road to recovery.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

There's a very good argument that we wouldn't have a team to support today without Welch. His introduction to the team was one of the catalysts that led to us escaping relegation in 1987.

If we'd gone down that season it's doubtful we'd ever have recovered.

Best wishes to him.

Plus the money we got from his sale helped the club no end.

Him, Rose and Hodge bring back some reet goalkeeping memories.

£200,000 in those days must be the equivalent of a million pounds transfer today.

I too add my best wishes, and remember fondly his many excellent displays for us, including Palace away. Without doubt one of our very best goalies, indeed players, in my opinion.

Is there anyway of sending a good luck message from this message board?

Aside from the Palace game, that Sherpa Vans Trophy game against Middlesboro stands out. Think they were high fliers at the top end of the then Division 3, and we took them all the way to extra time and penalties. I know we've been spoiled in recent years with keepers but Welch was the best for around 20 years.

That would be excellent, if you could do that TVOS. Thanks.

One of my all time heroes. Gutted when he went to Brizzle but no getting away from the fact that the money really helped the club. Get well soon Keith, we still remember you fondly.

So sad to hear this news.

Get well soon Keith.

In an era when we were spectacularly bad, Keith was the one shard of hope - even when he was Man of the Match in an 8-0 defeat at Orient!

He was a reason to keep going to games. When he took up position in the net, you'd think, "we might have a chance here today".

The performance at Palace is still widely regarded as the best individual performance of any Dale player in one match - I've not seen a better one since.

And, I recall the look of disbelief in the face of Tommy Tynan when Keith rushed off his line to nick the ball from Tynan's boot when the striker looked certain to score. This said it all in a 0-0 draw at home to Torquay. Tynan scored 249 goals in 646 games for younger readers!

Get well soon Keith. We all remember you well. Keep the faith - just like we did.
