Nice to hear Gary Johnson praising Shephard on his league one debut for Yeovil.
It is great to see as Shephard has been with the academy for a number of years and not a player we have bought in, we need to keep this steady conveyor belt of players coming through, always nice to see the local products doing well and gives confidence in our youth system.

Liam Shephard is from Pentre in the Rhondda where he still lives.
His father is Gary Shephard, who played for Newport and Merthyr for many years ,and was the Merthyr manager up until last year.
Liam is on an apprentice loan to Yeovil for one month-and played his first league game last night at Preston.
He plays at right full back and is twenty years old.
He is captain of our under 21side this year after being captain of our under 19 side last year.He was also under 19 player of the year last year
He is highly thought of by Gary Monk and has been on the bench as substitute a few times this year | |

There are major differences between youth or apprentice loans and normal loans.
Usually players are loaned to save wages costs or and with the possibility of the player being bought at the end of the loan.
The cost of wages is normally paid by the lending club in respect of youth loans.They are made on the presumption that the borrowing club will give the players game time.
They are intended to give the player a taste of what life is like in the lower divisions,and to play in front of crowds which they would not normally get in under 21 football.also to play in 'real'games where their fellow players and opponents are playing for their 'bread and butter'
In a way it's a method of hardening up a promising player.
The week before he went on loan Liam Shephard was awarded a two and a half year contract,so the club obviously see him as a player of the future. | |

I would be interested to know how many of you oldies ;-) there are in Merthyr. I was at an away game last season and there were a group of about 30 from Merthyr. All young uns. Are the oldies the same ? Cardiff would have you believe its all blue ( or red ) | |
