Stay In Manchester Rooney & Break Sir Bobby's Record Says Le God

In his latest blog, Matt Le Tissier urges Wayne Rooney to chase immortality at Old Trafford rather than become just another Chelsea big money signing.

Wayne Rooney should stay at Manchester United and break Sir Bobby Charlton’s club goal scoring record.

I know Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is desperate to get his hands on the England striker and has made a second £25 million plus bid for the player.

Personally, I can’t see United wanting to sell him to one of their Premier League rivals and I wouldn’t want to see Wayne playing abroad.

But I would like to see Wayne stay at Old Trafford and get that record which would be a lasting achievement on his career CV especially when you think of all the quality strikers they have had over the years.

He needs 52 goals to match Sir Bobby’s record of 249 and is already only the fourth United player to reach double figures.

Winning medals is one thing but it’s one heck of a carrot dangling in front of Rooney to leave the football club with that kind of legacy.

If he thinks about this deeply he might feel that it is something well worth achieving when it comes to the end of his playing days.

For a few years at Southampton I was always chasing Mick Channon’s club scoring record which was always at the back of my mind.

Unfortunately I didn’t quite reach it and fell 18 goals short in the end which was a bit of a blow to me.

I would like to think Wayne has enough money in the bank and feels there are other things to achieve in his career like breaking that record.

There’s a lot of talk now that he is close to slapping in a transfer request after United rejected Chelsea’s latest offer.

It’s been reported he was upset missing out on a few big games last season and that he doesn’t like the thought of playing second fiddle to Robin van Persie.

He may have missed some games but he must also realise the main reason for that was because he wasn’t playing his best.

Now, if Wayne Rooney is at his best he wouldn’t be missing out on the big nights and sitting on the bench.

As a player you sometimes have to take a step back and look at the situation realistically and maybe say that the manager hasn’t been playing me bacause I haven’t been performing.

David Moyes has taken on a tough job but he’s so far stood firm with all the questions that have been thrown at him over Rooney.

People have been asking whether the two men have fallen out and if they can work together?

I am sure this would not have been happening had they not been involved in that court case a few years ago after the player left Everton.

Dealing with Rooney’s future could turn out to be the manager’s biggest test he will ever face at Old Trafford.

Hopefully it will all work out well in the end for United and Moyes in that Rooney stays and goes on to net Sir Bobby’s wonderful record.
