Southampton 8 Sunderland 0 - 2014 in Pictures Friday, 8th Mar 2024 11:45 At the start of the 2014 season, Saints were in turmoil after the departure of Mauricio Pochetino to Tottenham Hotspur along with other big names leaving, but Ronald Koeman soon turned things around. A four week period in the Autumn of 2014 was not good for clubs from the North East travelling to Southampton, on 13th September Newcastle arrived at St Mary's and were despatched 4-0, but a month later their big rivals Sunderland arrived and the scoreline was doubled. Saints were 3-0 up at half time with an own goal from Santiago Vergini opening the scoring after 12 minutes, Graziano Pelle on 18 minutes doubling the lead and then Jack Cork on 37 minutes. The second half started slowly before another own goal, this time from Liam Bridcutt made it 4-0 on 63 minutes and then the floodgates opened. Pelle made it 5-0 on 69 minutes, followed by Dusan Tadic on 78 minutes and Victor Wanyama scored a minute later and Saints were 7-0 up with 10 minutes to play. The crowd were baying for blood but there would be only one more goal and bizarrely it would be another own goal, this one on 86 minutes from Patrick Van Aanholt. Despite a lot of pressure Sunderland held on to ensure that there would be no double figure defeat for them, Saints fans knew then that they were watching something special building at St Mary's and for the next 3 seasons it was a great time to support Southampton FC. Here are some pictures from that great day. Photo: Action Images Please report offensive, libellous or inappropriate posts by using the links provided.
