Match Thread Gateshead
at 22:21 4 Mar 2025

To control the controlables that’s all we can do. To that end job done tonight. Oldham are in a slump at the moment. There is still so much to play for and there will be plenty of twists and turns yet. We have lacked consistency for so much of the season. Now would be a good time to put that right. We have the squad to put a strong run together, do we have the gnarl and grunt? I would like to think we do.

Wow, JM has at least proved flexible in his team selection. Just surprised that after our first win in a while that this number of changes have been made. Interesting

Good professional performance yesterday from the whole team. We must, must go again with the same intensity again against Gateshead. If there is a sniff of playing a competing game at Wembley that should be enough to motivate the players to find depths of stamina game in game out. The only player who seems to be underperforming against his usual standard is Beckwith, who to be fair has dance virtually every dance this season.

Pete Hannam RIP
at 16:58 25 Feb 2025

Sadden to rely the passing of Pete Hannam. He first walked up to Spotland for a match at the age of 8, and was a fixture at home and many away games thereafter. His final game being just on Saturday. Laterly being the organiser of the Comrades Club box at the ground.
He drove for Nutalls for donkeys years and also captained Castleton darts team.
Condolences to all the family.

Not at all, I wouldn’t lay odds against us reaching the play off, and would probably back us at a shade of odds on. The FA Tropy should not really get in the way of that. Interesting that 7th placed Altricham are the side we play in the next round of the Trophy. Will both teams go at it full bore. I hope they do.
I am at least consistent in saying we are inconsistent. Despite the two recent draws it is no easy task to predict which version of of Dale will turn up for any game.

There was a comment about physicality, and I agree a player like Jimmy Ryan, when fit, would be a real asset in this team.

Were you at the game? If so did you watch or were you just looking at your phone.
Hogan was the calming influence who got his head on most of the stuff coming in. Sorry, but there is no justification for you comment about Hogan on today’s performance. I know we all see games differently but suggesting Hogan was a liability is so wide of the mark.

One another topic I thought BJ’s comments about the first half were odd. I thought we needed the half time whistle because we were on the back foot at the time.

Southend made little use of the possession we afforded them. Thought Beckwith had a poor game by his high standards. Neither keeper was worked hard enough for either side to deserve the victory.
Hogan had a sound game and didn’t deserve the OG against him. Mitchell also put in a shift, but Gilmour would be our MoM for me.
We are so inconsistent we are struggling to have an identity. Still think we will get a play off place because the stats show we win more than we loose.

Well said. I was very disappointed with that effort and it hurts more because it’s a derby. But let’s not start wringing hands or bed wetting about the play offs on the strength of that.
We have been around the play offs for months and I can’t see that changing on the balance of the season to date. We are a very frustrating team to watch. The fans, including me think the team could be better placed than we are, but that should not mask the reality of what we actually are in the context of this league.

Oldham game
at 14:33 4 Feb 2025

Might seem on an Oldham Game thread but I am going to talk about the match.

I see this as our biggest, most, important game since we exited the EFL. We seem to be in fine fettle so no excuses for not putting in a big performance tonight. Unless Oldham play a low block, which I can’t see happening or being tolerated by their fans. If we play to our strengths and get the crowd engaged early I think we will have too much for them.
A month ago I wouldn’t probably have been able to say that, so the rearranged fixture might have worked in our favour. Like everyone I prefer points on the board to games in hand. Tonight begins the task of turning those games into a positive move up the table.
If the players want it as much as the fans do tonight can really be the catalyst to spark a surge up the table.
Give it some welly.

The highlights shone a light on how profligate we were in front of goal. Burger was stuffed by the Ref, getting booked for diving when it was a clear penalty..
This is getting interesting now, and the money is an added bonus. Can we target this competition and keep a play off place? I think we can at least in the short term.
Could we give any player a mini break. Beckwith doesn’t get much rest bite, or Gordon on the other side. If East needs rest we have decent options of the bench in there.
Tuesday is massive (not least for the ground staff) beat them, and Ebbsfleet and we could even be nudging 3000 gates at Spotland again.

Again of the highlights (1 point from twelve when I have seen Dale live this season).
That was good. Three forwards on the scoresheet. 1st penalty of the season. A headed goal from a corner. We filled the surprises bingo card yesterday.
The point I saw Dale get was at Ebbsfleet and Ayinde was influential in that. Yesterday he looked really good. We have a squad many would envy with Ferguson, Burger, Allerakia, and McBride not being starters, and Hendo waiting in the wings. Nothing beats strong competition in a squad and we certainly have that at the moment. I’m hopeful the squad can absorb the schedule ahead. A shout out to Rodders he has really got his mojo working this last couple of games.
I think this result brings more pressure on Tuesday. It would be criminal for this performance to be followed by less than 3 against Boston (no disrespect to them).

Of the highlights I was pleased with what I saw. Having played such little league football I thought we may be of pace, but we gave it a go. Played a few balls in front of Rodney and Mitchell, which is where I think both are at their best. Rodders look much more of a handful than in any game I have seen him in this season. I doubt FRG have had many tougher home games this season.
Still plenty to look forward to this season. A game at Spotland would be nice.

A match thread anyone? Stockton v Rochdale FA trophy

I like the relaxed commentary style, which was very even handed and acknowledged the gulf between the teams. I am just glad the player got a game into their legs. They have not had a lot of football lately, and we don’t have many games scheduled in January either.
This is a venerable old competition and while it’s not the priority I would like to see us progress. Provided the squad doesn’t become stretched by the backlog of games, which may mount further in the next couple of weeks.

Plenty of positives from that. We have broken the win then loose streak. Mitchell is back among the goals, and he does seem to get on goal scoring streaks so here’s hoping for another. Barlow is looking settled at the club now after a difficult start. Didn’t think he would feature much, but he has staked his claim well. These 2 combined beautifully for the 3rd.
January looks tough, but we are looking reasonably solid in the play off spots at the moment.
Happy.

Strangely enough after my post on the D&R match thread I didn’t bother with the long journey to Spotland for this. So can’t really comment on the game. However it is easy to say the sending off changed the game, they always do. frequently the team down to 10, like ourselves at Gateshead gain more resilience and it can be hard to make the most of the numerical advantage. So credit to the team for comprehensively taking advantage last night.
Where do we go from here, well we are all kept guessing with this team lately.
I was pleased to see Rodders on the scoresheet. Feel MIitchell’s time will come if only the team can create a couple of chances for him.
