I’d be going for a Warnock type survival specialist if I was them. Does Steve Cooper count as that? I can’t see Potter risking his reputation with the state they are in. |

Vipotnik, I have to say, had easily his best game for us. Not just the goal, he positioned himself much better and was far more involved. Still a long way off a championship striker, but aside from the free kick, probably our only positive yesterday. |
| Forum Reply | Very bad start for Russ. at 20:05 15 Dec 2024
Of course it would. We’d be starting with Vipotnik and bringing Abdullai on for the last 10 minutes. We’d get crucified in the premier league with a prime Alex Ferguson in charge. |

I’d say what Williams is doing is working. Despite the embarrassment that second half was. When you look at it objectively, we’ve got gaping holes in our squad and I’d imagine a bottom third budget. Some fans have unrealistic expectations and think we should be in and around the top six. The style he plays will deliver us a mid table finish, which would actually be punching above our weight. |

Best thing that could happen. Surely he won’t survive this. It’ll stop half of January turning into a Williams v Martin circus |

Well I haven’t missed a game if you count ones I didn’t go to Seriously though, I get what you’re saying and there’s merit to it, but it was much easier for people to go to games decades ago when football teams were community hubs and there was far less to do. It’s hard to really blame youngsters who never experienced that kind of camaraderie and can watch every game from home. |

Streaming is an extension of that and it’s hurting clubs everywhere. Far easier to watch from your lounge than make the effort. I’m guilty of it. Home games are easy for me, but I go away less than I did before I could watch every game. |
| Forum Reply | Possession Based football. at 10:47 14 Dec 2024
I don’t find the way we play boring. We average close to fifteen shots a game. We don’t pass it aimlessly between centre backs any more. When we do that, it’s to create a numerical advantage on one side and it invariably works. I could understand that criticism under Russell Martin where it was often possession without purpose. Reality is, any team playing 80s 442 with two wingers and two centre forwards would get ripped to shreds every week. Football is more cerebral now. |

You’ve taken ‘he’s proved he’s not in the summer’ and applied the part about it being involved in the summer yourself. What it actually refers to is the fact he proved he’s not the type of manager to throw his toys out the pram in the summer. You made the bit about not being involved in transfers up. I don’t know if he was involved in the summer or not. It’s quite plausible he was told he could have Eom and Franco but it was contingent on getting Yates and Kykharevych off the books. From memory, I think Keith said something along those lines. I very much doubt he’d have been happy with not bringing a capable striker in but that’s just my opinion. Signing young players with potential isn’t a new methodology. Over the last few years, Darling, Whittaker, Downes, Piroe, Key off the top of my head would have fitted that description. Vipotnik isn’t a bad signing per se. I actually think he has quite a high ceiling. The difference is we’ve never signed a striker who is nowhere near first team ready and thrown him straight in at the deep end before. |

Aside from you misunderstanding which but you were making up, we’re saying more or less the same thing. There was open discord between the previous regime and the three managers you have mentioned. The relationship between Williams and the Coleman group seems far more harmonious. Williams however, didn’t complain when he had what in my opinion was our worst transfer window since the Potter season. I completely believe what he says, as if he was the type to moan about being let down in that area, he would have done so in the summer. |

They have been a disaster and it’s going to take us a long time to get back to the position we were in when they took over, if we ever manage it. Unsuccessful isn’t an incorrect description, but it’s a massive understatement. Pre-Jenkins position is irrelevant. Everything that Jenkins and co built was in situ when they arrived. |

Possibly. It would be a surprise if we don’t get at least four points out of both though. We’re not a Page team anymore. |

To be honest, I’m quite happy with that. We may sneak it but should easily reach the playoffs. We’ve got a decent chance there too if all the top seeds win their groups. Do the highest ranked nations league teams get home advantage in the playoff semis? |

I get what you’re saying, but my guess is every single person making the trip to Portsmouth would rather the new owners give Darling and Cabango something to think about or bring Luke Williams a competent #9 either in January or the summer. This sort of initiative/thank you is fantastic and something to be applauded, but I think it’s the kind of thing the trust should be doing. They have and credit to them for it. |

I saw the press conference. He implied he’s got more say in transfer business now than he’s had in the past. Maybe it was a bit subtle for you. I fully believe him. I don’t know why you think I don’t. Again, please stop making things up. The rest of your post I completely agree with and it’s what I’ve said above. If he was the type to moan about transfer windows, which Cooper and Martin undoubtedly, though justifiably were, we’d have seen it in the summer. That’s what I’ve said above. Which part do you disagree with? The summer window being abysmal or Williams not moaning about it? |

Abbey wasn’t here at the start of the season and he’s not a good prospect, he’s played less than 30 times in 5 seasons. You’ve answered your own point re. Pedersen. Maybe I should have phrased it ‘two centre backs who are ever available’ for your benefit. I’m confident everyone else would have understood. The fact he played Cyrus Christie there when Darling went off speaks for itself. He isn’t always right, but my point is in this instance. You just don’t like it because it quite correctly paints Levein and Kaplan in a bad light. Edit - as a point of order I didn’t say he definitely wasn’t involved in those decisions - you made that up, but can you really imagine any manager wanting to start a season with two fit centre backs and Cullen and Vipotnik as his only striking options? Overall point I’m making is that if he was one of those managers to complain about the quality of his squad (like his predecessors) he would have done so already. [Post edited 13 Dec 0:48]

He already proved he’s not in the Summer. Can you imagine how the other three would have reacted if they’d had to start the season with two senior centre backs and an incredibly raw centre forward who hadn’t yet learned English? Williams just cracked on with the cards he was dealt. Let’s hope he gets a bit more support now we have new owners. |
