Why pull a defender out of position when we need to defend a lead, pull wingers in they can do the shuffling across the field rather our three at the back doing it and being over run as their players push forwards as they needed to. [Post edited 15 Dec 13:09]

Yes not all doom and gloom and in my mind, deluded as it may be, I think we are building for the near future but we have a lack of experience in the team and seeing us make the same mistakes is hard. We were struggling before the substitutions which is why they were made. Someone pointed out that Sunderland shut do our outlets but surely that is what we should have done after going 2-0 up, I don't like the fact they ended with a winger unmarked out wide because Tymon was being held in inside by a play they had pushed further up. Tymon should have got in a better position to mark the winger and either Grimes or Darling pick up the extra player but bad descions were made. We needed to fiill the midfield to win the ball there, with wingers stopped similar to what many teams have done to us. We more than matched Sunderland early on and with better marking and descion making after going up we should be using quick even long balls to catch them on the counterattack not getting caught on the ball in our half. |

His free kick was spot on. Did call it at the time(no proof unless you ask Alan who's sits next to me and has to listen to my nonesense) the goalie left a big space to cover and the left footed strike curled in nicely away from him. [Post edited 15 Dec 13:00]

Only mentioned it as the two halves of football were similarly the polar opposites. I though the first half yesterday was excellent every one seemed to be working with an understanding of what was needed to stay relatively solid while causing them problems. Nobody could be singled out as playing badly all playing well, yes you could pick out instance or mistakes and errors but on the whole I was satisfied with being up and doing well in the game at half time But.... the second half was another story and not one we haven't seen before. There are signs of the team improving but there are issues that need to be sorted. [Post edited 15 Dec 11:10]

Yes just as good as Cardiff were when they similarly turned the game around against us earlier this season. We made forced and unforced errors, pressure applied or self inflicted will do that and how to stop or cope with it needs to be sorted. |

It is what they are asked to do, would you say Key is a big cumbersome centrehalfor one of our better skilful players and yet a similarly has been caught out, we all have asked to get the ball forward quicker and to an extent we have but we have to realise that if teams are going to commit to closing us down the ball has to be released quicker, be it to safety or down the pitch to feet or into space we stopped picking the right options yesterday. |

You forgot to mention a number of others who also got caught dribbling into congestion, once a number of players commit to closing down our player on the ball it means some of our players are spare and areas of the pitch have opened up but our aforementioned dribblers are so busy looking for the pass into feet when none is available instead they should be looking for spaces to turn the opposition defence also relieving pressure on ourselves. We did this in the first twenty with excellent results but we did it from a well set up defensive system that took into account how the opposition was set up. Once Sunderland went behind they had to change the way they played. Roll.on into the second half Sunderland set up changed they pushed players into the channels between our Centrehalves and our fullbacks we did not counter that, our marking was terrible, noteable on our left because that was the side closest to me in the East stand, Tymon had two players to mark with no help either from Grimes or Darling, he really didn't know who to mark and left the winger with time and space to run at hin and goals resulted from it. It has been mentioned in another thread that the old 4-4-2 formation would be ripped apart by possession based football but what formation did we adopt in that second half because we left ourselves wide open no point having attackers on the pitch if they are not ableor unwilling to get the ball to them. It would seem that we were set up in the second half to mark space not players. But they were a better team I see written, were Cardiff a better team when they similarly turned the second half around earlier this season, Williams really needs to look at our defensive set up and options taken as teams come out with the intention of attacking us, one size does not fit all, this problem has been seen this season at various times during games and we have to realise when to adapt. |

On the balance of play in the first half we fully deserved to b be in the lead. But They stretched the game in the second half putting men further forward as they needed to and we didn't get our marking right so that when the ball was won by Sunderland with one pass their players had time and space on the ball they didn't have in the first half. What did we in that first half when we won the ball,we moved the ball on from player to player quickly in the second we didn't instance of getting caught on thee ball and being out muscled just increased. There are times when our wingers need to tuck in to win the midfield while also allowing the midfield to mark players who have pressed up on our defence and also allowing Tymon to mark and stop the winger get the ball to feet. Again how we game managed that second half was poor, all be it against a good team that we had made look beatable in the first. At times we had players back but they seemed at a loss as to know who to mark. |

Vigouroux, Routledge youthful ill thought out exuberance spoiling their play, some players are more than happy to get and tale their second or third chance, others not knowing when they are in a good place always chasing better things, Paterson springs to mind along with a few others. |

He did come on at centre forward position once as a sub and seemed to do ok holding the ball up but we had dropped so deep he had no support. Do think we get out muscled in various parts of our game, Franco came on yesterday and seemed to be trying too hard chasing shadows very unusual for him which shows it is very hard to judge anyone until a settle team is found one that can command whole swaves of a game and do it consistently we are getting there but not just yet. As yet after the substitutions we do seem weaker defensively. All for the forwards operating a high press but that has to be done intelligently, how many times are we seeing our centre forwards running themselves ragged chasing down the ball with very little support. No wonder Cillen who did the closing down bit of the work our centre forwards are being asked to do but looks a lot better now he has dropped off not having to do the comical routine of being of chase the ball trying to catch out Championship defenders by himself. |

Does he add to the team at defensive set pieces, able to compete against tall players? Think we are generally light in the aerial combat area as a team. Luckily the player who caused the problem for their goal had to go off as he seemed to pull something in the process. |

Will be interesting to see who will start on Saturday maybe Eom and Ronald giving him a needed rest on the bench. |

Did Martin refuse to use him when he arrived or was he told to try and force him out although initially he would have been serving his ban for playoff sending off. Seems to have removed the intensity in his game much to his detriment but has hit a couple of nice goals in his time. |

Any info on who was included in the U21 squad and who wasn't or is there no apparent movement up through the ranks for opening to the first team squad? |

We have seen it done by Williams leaving Ronald up top in the middle who did cause the defenders problems given his size, I don't think a younger Lowe the first time with us would have held the ball up so well as he did for Key but experience gained made him a better player so will to give Ronald a bit of slack. As for MPH any slack I have given him is now stretched to breaking point,Is it just a case with both MPH and Abdulai don't seem to have the drive or desire needed to compete at this level in the positions they are pick for. Do we start with Bianchini tomorrow his movement seems better than Vipotnik meaning we could bring Vipotnik on later in the game as needed as we have seen lately the crosses into the box to recover game not being convert with ineffectual heading, having said that we haven't convert as many chances as we should have on the ground either. Just hope that winning formula can be found against some of these so called weaker teams. |
