I think we are being too hard on the team for the first half. Oxford absolutely flew out of the blocks at the start which was not surprising after not playing for 11 days. They were literally running around like headless chickens. True, we didn't play well but I think after Norwich, who were the polar opposite of Oxford in terms of pace, it was more difficult. No one had any time on the ball. That said, one or two players looked unable to cope with the pace of the game, including Madsen who was dispossesed on a regular basis. I was quite surprised with the booing at half time. It was obvious that Oxford were going to make it difficult for us to play and it was a matter of time before they would run out of steam and we would be able to play our game. I thought Marti did well at half-time, keeping the same players on but getting them to play higher up the pitch and spread Oxford as much as possible so that they would tire more quickly. Good management, as usual, from Marti. [Post edited 12 Dec 4:48]

I thought we were fcuked also The players are coming much better but for me it's the organisation and belief which has been installed by the manager that has turned this around. |

I agree re Dembele. He has the attributes to replace Chair. It's what we do, train them up and sell them on. I don't know if anyone read the latest Development Squad report but it sounds like there is a 15 year old coming through who is alreay cutting the mustard with the 18 year olds. |

I thought they were serial pressers, in which case we won't have so much possession and time on the ball. I know it goes completely against the grain but I just wonder whether Frey, if fit, would be good starting. Kolli will no doubt be very closely marked tonight and if it is from the off then it might stifle him for the duration. A fit Frey careering around and charging into their centre backs from kick-off could open up more cracks. [Post edited 11 Dec 13:40]

Good spot. Yes, three players definitely posted on the edge of the area ready to go right, left or centre when they played it out from the back. It worked well and I think we will catch teams out this way because at some stage they will misplace a pass. On-the-ball tactics also seem to have changed a bit with more emphasis on building attacks down the flanks rather than trying to weave a path through the middle of the final third. That's why I wonder if Chair will get back in. We are definitely trying to get in around the full backs. |

Ref was a strange one. Seemed more intent on getting throw-ins taken form the right place rather than blowing up for cynical fans. However one thing that he did get right (although no-one around me would agree) was booking Nardi for twice trying to take a free-kick from the wrong place a minute before half-time. |

I agree with all the above. He's a good player but I'm not sure he is going to dominate his position in the team. We probably need to sit down with him in Jan and have that conversation about his contract. |
| Forum Reply | Sam Field or no Sam Field? at 14:38 8 Dec 2024
Field has been a little bit more attacking in recent games - when the state of the game has allowed. Yes, Morgan plays a little higher and he can pick a pass but Field is absolutely indispensable in those away games when we look to absorb pressure and hit teams on the break. Absolutely indispensable. I'd bring Field back in on Wednesday. Fresh legs and invaluable experience against a team who will run themselves into the ground to get something out of the game. |

Because he doesn't quite fit what we are trying to do at the moment |

Interesting game from Morgan. I thought his best one so far. Matched up to the Norwich midfielders really well. Yes, one or two misplaced passes but that will come with experience. He is going to be our next Sam Field. When he fills out he's gonna boss it ! |

I think it's true. Our most expensive signings have not yet brought a lot of added value and Marti has had a bum hand to play with. I think the last few results have been in spite of and not because of Nourry. Needs to be left to play with his computer games while others get on with the football business. |

Going to have to work hard to get back in the side. Not going to get in ahead of Saito or Smyth for work-rate, and potentially productivity. By the time he is back might not get in ahead of Kolli for final product. Nice dilemma to have ! [Post edited 7 Dec 19:08]

Has to play This boy is the pick of the bunch. He has so many attributes - technique, footballing intelligence, speed of mind and body, pace, balance etc etc. He has to play |

Is he still wearing his cowboy gear ? You never know when a bunch of Indians might descend upon an EFL match. |

Posted this before and it's kind of 2000 - 2010 material but people (usually girls/women) who say 'like' every other sentence. Actually I don't have so much of a problem with girls saying it because it's part of the bonding exercise but mid-20/30 year olds saying it every 5 seconds. Come on !!! You're English, use the language properly and try to get to the end of a sentence without sounding like a teenager. Still it's one of the best things about travelling - when you get on the plane and you know that you won't be hearing 'I was like ....' for 2 weeks |

Agree 100% with the last two posts. Thought we looked much more purposeful and the game-planning and implementation was effective. Can't get my head around Marti's subs (bringing on a slow left back against a quick right winger, taking off a quick right winger and replacing with a no. 2 etc etc). I always like to see a rapid striker introduced with 10 to go. Shame we haven't got one. [Post edited 30 Nov 16:27]

Good point. Finally beginning to look like we have 11 players who can contribute and effect things. Shame we will miss Sam v Norwich but we have a week to prepare for that. |
