Swansea City suffer Jonjo Shelvey blow ahead of Cardiff City clash

JONJO Shelvey is a major doubt for Saturday's South Wales derby after aggravating his hamstring problem in Swansea City's bleak defeat at West Ham.
But Swansea have fingers crossed that Michu, Michel Vorm and Jose Canas could all play some part in a potentially critical clash with Cardiff City.
Swansea return to training this morning having had two days off since an awful display at Upton Park.
And the news that Shelvey, one of the few scrappers in Michael Laudrup's squad, looks set to miss the Cardiff game will do nothing to lighten the mood.
Shelvey has been struggling with hamstring issues for a number of weeks.
He missed the FA Cup win at Birmingham ten days ago and then limped out of the West Ham reverse.
Swansea are still assessing the extent of Shelvey's injury, but the initial feeling is that he has little chance of featuring against the Bluebirds.
And that is a heavy blow given that the £5 million former Liverpool man has been one of their better performers during their recent barren run.
Shelvey's probable absence may increase the temptation to plunge Michu straight back into action – although Laudrup has insisted he will not rush the Spanish international back.
Michu is due to return to full training this week having undergone ankle surgery.
The return of last season's 22-goal top-scorer could be key for Swansea as they bid to pull clear of relegation danger.
But Laudrup has stressed that Swansea need to be careful with Michu – and suggested last week that there was no chance of the 27-year-old being fit to start against Cardiff.
However, just having Michu back in the matchday 18 would be a huge lift for a Swansea squad who are still licking their wounds after a passionless performance against West Ham.
Like Michu, Vorm has not played since the 1-1 draw at Norwich in mid-December having had an operation.
His return would also be a significant boost for Swansea, for the Dutch international keeper is a big presence between the posts.
Canas's possible comeback may be regarded as less significant – although it would be timely given Shelvey's situation.
The holding midfielder has not played since the league defeat at Manchester United on January 11 after damaging ankle ligaments, but is on course for Cardiff having returned to full training at the end of last week. |

Looks like Kyle Bartley wasn't brought back to be sold elsewhere.
But with Monk injured for god knows how long and and the staff not even sure if he will ever return, it's not surprising Bartley was recalled with only 3 other fit centre backs in the squad.
Without Monk, centre back was the position with least cover of any with only 3 players for 2 spots. |

Rory Donnelly returns to Swansea City after just one training session with Coventry City

RORY Donnelly has returned to Swansea City in mysterious circumstances after just one day at Coventry City.
Donnelly joined the Sky Blues on loan for the rest of the season ahead of last Friday’s transfer deadline.
But it has now emerged that he came back to Wales after only one training session for what the two clubs are calling personal reasons.
The 21-year-old had been tipped to make his Coventry debut in Tuesday night’s clash with Bristol City, but there is now no chance of that happening.
Instead, as things stand, Donnelly is expected to report for training with Swansea.
However, if he returns to the Liberty on a full-time basis, he will not even be able to play for Swansea’s under-21s before next season because he is officially a Coventry player until May.
Swansea are now speaking to Coventry in the hope that Donnelly will return to the League One side.
“Both clubs are working on a solution to the situation but he’ll certainly not be available for tomorrow night,” said Coventry boss Steven Pressley.
“It’s a disappointment because we obviously worked hard to get in a couple of strikers ahead of the window closing but that’s football and that’s what we’re faced with.” |

Coventry City’s latest loan striker Rory Donnelly has returned to Swansea before he’s even kicked a ball in anger for the Sky Blues.
The 21-year-old was in line to make his debut alongside fellow transfer window recruit Nathan Delfouneso against Bristol City tomorrow night but has gone back to his parent club for personal reasons.
However, Coventry boss Steven Pressley remains hopeful the situation can be resolved, saying: “Both clubs are working on a solution to the situation but he’ll certainly not be available for tomorrow night.
“It’s a disappointment because we obviously worked hard to get in a couple of strikers ahead of the window closing but that’s football and that’s what we’re faced with.”
His absence means Franck Moussa is set to retain his place as a supporting striker when City travel to Ashton Gate.
Meanwhile, John Fleck and another new recruit, Dylan McGeouch — a wide midfielder from Celtic — sat out training today with a sickness bug, but Pressley remains hopeful they will recover in time to travel.

Swansea City chairman rejects Michael Laudrup rumours
Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has rejected claims the club have discussed manager Michael Laudrup's future.
Rumours have been circulating about Laudrup's future after the Swans lost 2-0 at West Ham on Saturday.
It was their sixth defeat in eight Premier League games, leaving them only two points off the relegation places.
"I haven't heard anything in reference to Michael and neither have we met, or discussed, or done anything about Michael," said Jenkins.
"A couple of us did actually meet up on Sunday morning to have a cup of coffee like we normally do. That's as simple as it was. That's where the first rumour came from.
"It's difficult for me to say anything because there isn't anything to discuss."
The Swans have slipped to 12th in the table but are only three points ahead of rivals Cardiff, who are second from bottom.
The two clubs meet at the Liberty Stadium in a crucial south-Wales derby on Saturday.
"The bigger picture as always is winning a Premier League match and it so happens this week we are playing Cardiff," he said. "Winning the match, I can assure you, is the most important thing for both teams."
Added Jenkins: "When you end up losing matches, when everything is so tight at the bottom of the Premier League, you get rumours and you get stories. We have had them for many weeks.
"If we win everything is fine. If we lose it's not."

The Cornelius transfer back to FC Copenhagen from Cardiff was confirmed by FC Copenhagen 1 minute before deadline. They have signed a 5-year deal.
Transfer delayed because FIFA's transfer system had crashed.
I wonder what happens if deals can't get done in time because of a crashed FIFA system?
