Article in programme - Simon Barker 10:41 - Nov 3 with 6077 views | Antti_Heinola | Anyone else see that article in the programme yesterday that basically took the p!ss out of Simon Barker? I suppose it was meant to be affectionately fun, but it came across as a bit out of order to me. I know Barker wasn't everyone's favourite, but the guy played for us for years, always put a shift in, scored some important goals and was a great club man and a very decent midfielder. I'll never forget the time he scored at the Loft for Port Vale against us and refused to celebrate, showing a lot of respect for us. Had it been an internet article it probably wouldn't have bothered me, but being in the match programme it jarred I think. You'd never get Clive digging out a player like that in his article. Very poor from Ian Taylor IMO to let this pass through.

Article in programme - Simon Barker on 15:41 - Nov 3 by ted_hendrix | Simon Barker was an o.k. footballer for us nothing more nothing less, like others I haven't bought a programme since I don't know when so that's that then. As I see it Barker being at the club for at least 10 Years should have earnt him some form of respect? not what sounds like a piss take-if the article is in the QPR programme then its been written in the clubs name. I met Simon Barker at a huge charity thing after he left us and he was a good bloke and we chatted for a good while. Thank God Bob Malcolm signed for QPR years later, up until that point Simon Barker must have been the slowest player I ever saw wearing a Rangers shirt. |
I think that's right. He wasn't some sort of legend, sometimes he was outclassed by much more expensive players at much richer clubs, but he was a good honest pro and did perfectly OK for us in what was at the time a pretty decent top-flight team. He was outstanding in that Liverpool cup game and I think won a lot of people over then. He was also one of the last generation of top-flight players who weren't earning so much as to be able to retire at the end of his football career

He was Ok remember him scoringa cracking chip poss against weds, mainly remember him for always staying out last and clapping fans at end of the game. In an era of real quality not in the same league but a bit like olly a good servant of the club so warrants respect.

Article in programme - Simon Barker on 16:24 - Nov 3 by smegma | Just read the article and cant see what all the fuss is about or what Ian Taylor has done wrong when it was written by a sky sports presenter and lifelong fan (allegedly). |
Smegma, as I said, it's nothing terrible, but to me it reads as being disrespectful - 'he was called Mavis because he dithered on the ball, Mavis in Corrie could never make a decision' and lines about how unlikely it was for him to score a goal (he got one in 10 for us, not terrible for a midfielder). I did say some people might not really agree with me, and that's fair enough, maybe I'm being over-sensitive. As I said, had it been an article online, I wouldn't have been too bothered - but it seemed out of place to me in a official publication and you would never catch Clive digging a player out like that in the programme. To me it comes across as condescending towards Barker who was a good player for us, and a loyal servant to the club. I don't know mate, maybe it's fine, I just found it disrespectful. Put it this way: If Barker was to read it, I think his reaction would be partly a smile, but also partly, 'who the f*ck does this guy think he is?'. Ian Taylor is the editor of the programme, so I assume everything that goes in it has been read and approved by him first. The silly factual error about the 'Mavis' thing is at best sloppy editing of some extremely sloppy research by the writer.

Article in programme - Simon Barker on 22:04 - Nov 3 with 1068 views | eastside_r | Not seen the article, so I an not going to go all Daily Mail and condemn it. But here is my take on Simon Barker. He was a very good box to box midfielder in the early nineties team Unfortunately when he lost a bit of pace and the ability to forge forward his game went downhill. Just a fact of the ageing process. He was probably not good enough for the top flight in his last season or so. However, he was a good servant and always gave 100%. He also came out with a nice show of support when we were in admin and relegated to the third tier. Strangely he was one of those players who was always a target of the boo-boys. I liked him as a player and I've heard from those who have met him that he is a good bloke.

Article in programme - Simon Barker on 16:03 - Nov 3 by Westy75 | Good for him. Remember Rowlands getting stick for doing the same in front of ellerslie a few years ago. Fair enough to slag off players that don't make an effort, but makes me laugh when fans are happy to dish it out but get all offended when it comes back at them. |
I thought Rowlands was out of order that time, I've gotta say, and I lost a lot of respect for him. I liked Barker and thought he was a good servant to the Club. Remember he scored a great goal at the School End on the volley after a corner was cleared, can't remember who it was against though. Weren't Spurs after him before they ended up getting Gazza?
