Fair points re: his lack of diplomacy about the French league and so on. But while my first response was to join the mickey-taking re: the accent, I suddenly remembered the way I spoke a sort of simplified English (and why I did it) when living abroad for a few years. Now I'm more inclined to think that bit does him some credit:

He has actually realised it sounds odd. But, he did say they wouldn't understand Scouse.
It would be no surprise if he picked up a bit of a French accent,as he's learning the language and interacting with the French speaking players.

Just heard it and cannot hear any hint of french accent in there. I don't know what people are on about.
This said when I moved to the UK, when I came back home people were telling me I had a bit of an english accent when speaking french, I couldnt tell, and certainly wasnt putting anything on, and no doubt nobody in england could tell either.
So in light of this, I dont think he is being a tw@t in this particular case. Au contraire, it shows he is making an effort to learn the local linguo, which is good in my opinion |  | | |

When I asked directions for Elysee Monmartre in French one of the couples I asked then asked me if I could speak English
