Coleman has to be given time now 13:13 - Jan 24 with 3882 viewsStAnnesDale

Given we have had to pay substantial compensation to Eyre/Bunn and Accrington to get John Coleman making funds even tighter than normal, we need to give him a chance and not get too upset if he cannot turn things round immediately. He ticks the boxes in that he signs young players, has developed and sold a few players for money, knows the much underused non-league scene, and has worked with tight budgets, punching above his club's weight.

I think his main problem is that essentially the majority of players are not good enough for League 1. 5 players of League 1 standard or above (mainly above) left in the Summer, others like Buckley, Kennedy, Dagnall had already left. To my mind none of the players brought in post Hill have shown themselves to be League 1 standard individually (except Ball first time round) so it is not surprising that collectively we have been failing. OK Bogdanovic and Bunn had the odd good game and Darby could become League 1 in a stronger all round team.

Of our permanent players, to my mind Widdowson and Adams are League 1 players. Kennedy just maybe if he has pace alongside him. Jones was last season but has not maintained his form as the side has deteriorated this. Tutte and Grimes may have potential if end product and workrate can be improved respectively. The postive side is that except for Widdowson, they are all under contract for next season along with Holness (League 2 player without someone of Dawson's calibre alongside him), and Jordan (good footballer and passer but too slow for full back and too prone to mistakes for my liking), so the others can all be replaced.

Yes some balance, organisation, motivation, fighting spirit and constistant team selection and tactics will help and make all players look better, but as we are generally a small side with no pace it will only go so far. Better players will be required. It was here that Eyre essentially failed in my view along with not signing a target man (I am not sure what Bergkhamp was), to replace OGrady.

Coleman will probably need the Summer to clear out the players and bring in new ones. Beech was saddled with a large squad (for Dale) not up to standard, but did play 5 poor or out of form sides out of 6 and could only muster 3 draws. with the 3 defeats being shocking performances Coleman has to cope with playing against better sides more often now. It will be a magnificent performance if he avoids relegation but it will not be his fault if we do not.

Good post.
Totally agree that Coleman has to be given time regardless of results this season. I'm not expecting him to keep us up, and will be absolutely amazed if he can.
For me it is now far more important that he is allowed to build for next season and put the club back on a secure footing on the playing front so that next season isn't a struggle like this one. Long term I think he is exactly the man we need to bring stability back to the club.

dale have wasted loads of cash on compensation so financially it must be a bit tight, youve got the right men in coleman and bellend ( you all know thats what jimmy is), he has established accy in div 4 and will do the same for you lot

Agree with O/P. I dread seeing 'Coleman Out' threads if we haven't won after two or three matches. Rome wasn't built in a day - he needs tome to sort things out and begin to stamp his own style on the club.

if he doesnt get a win in his first 5 games, then it really is coleman out time. We then need to look towards someone of jose the special ones calibre.

I think the majority of our fans are relatively patient when it comes to our managers. I personally will be looking for improvement on the dross we have had to endure, which shouldn't be hard. If Coleman can instill a fight til then end of the season that sees better performances and hopefully results, whether we go down or not, matters not. Its a good appointment because it prepares us for both senarios, but we should see improvement.. And you just never know..

Coleman outs aren't going to happen, there's a recognition that he's experienced and knows what he's doing unlike eyre or beech whose experience had been limited to youth team football

What a fantastic post. It's great to see positivtiy without being to naive. I also, do not expect Coleman to keep us up, he's 5 games too late. If we was appointed when Beech was then, the chances would of been a lot bigger. But, we can't expect a boring end to the season - Coleman has always kept Accy going to the end, and it respectively paid off when they was in the Play Offs was it, last season? Or the one before.

Whatever happens, Coleman is the man. & i'm lead to believe he's going to be the man for quite some time now as there isn't a chance of bringing in a new manager due to funds etc. He's got my 100% backing; & i'll be showing my dedication on Saturday. He's a top bloke with ambitious objectives. I'd love to hear what his first words are with the lads and I can guarantee the whole squad will be in for a shock tomorrow morning.

What a debut game to go into. It's got all the credentials of a perfect start. Bury at home, more than just a game of Saturday football. He's walking in on one of the most passionate days a Dale fan will attend.

Good luck with everything John!

Gotta love his quotes at the end of his last interview for Accy when being asked about the Dale rumours. I know they are only words, but it's the kind of mentality we need in a manager, especially for the slog that the next few months are going to be.

"If the sum of your ambitions is to manage in League Two with a club who are on a small budget, I think our club wouldn't benefit from it."

"If our club didn't realise I was ambitious we'd possibly still be in the UniBond."

I know we aren't suppose to mention the past and past managers, but they sound almost H**l-esque. Which you can't help but admire

I've always compared Coleman with Hill. They seem to have the same approach to the game but also to the media - very calm, but speak their mind.

Totally agree on giving John time. The season is far from over though yet and League One status is still an aim that can be succeeded. Whether that means guaranteed safety on the last day, then so be it and as others have said on here it's certain to be a bumpy ride. I'm also fully backing Coleman and what he can do. It's evident; he's brought Accrington from a UniBond outfit, to a stable Football League team. Not only does he have to be given time based on results, he's come into a new set up and he may find he doesn't like all the players in our squad, so waiting until summer might have to be a sacrifice. One thing I can say which is linked to the PDiddy thread is out of the three management teams we have had here at Spotland this season, Coleman is by far the best man for the job & I'm pretty sure people was backing him for the role when Hill left.

Wishing the best for John and whoever he brings in with him. But most of all, lets start making a name for ourselves again. Time to kick on!

I'm sure I must be missing something here, but isn't managing in League Two with a club on a small budget precisely what he's just contracted himself to!

Not quite, but it might prove to be. Hopefully, he can avoid part of the scenario you describe.
