Driving in France π«π· 18:21 - Feb 25 with 3159 views | GaryHaddock | Taking a trip there soon, but have heard horror stories of UK drivers getting nicked and fined over there for not having triangles, breathalysers, and brie knives (joke). I know we have a few Gallic based Rs here, can anyone provide some advice or send a good link to guidance on what I need to carry?

There is a Halfords at Le Tunnel if you go that way for anything last minute you forgot! The roads are so much better than the UK, but be aware that speed limits change for the weather, as they should, so if its raining or foggy then its a different limit. Tolls can be expensive and the motorway services can be spread out. I've driven top to bottom a few times, and once on electric only with no problems. Only sh!t myself once when everything froze and lorries were skidding over. did about 10mph after that with white knuckles...

In all seriousness be careful when driving through small villages . They have little narrow raised kerbs to drive through which can catch you out if your clip them.
Driving in France π«π· on 12:45 - Feb 26 with 625 views | qprninja | Nah, their roads are fantastic, a million times better than ours. We drove north to south and back last summer, never hit one traffic jam or issue the whole time. Worst bits of the trip were exclusively UK side. Our roads are broken. A good way to avoid being stopped for driving like a tool and fined for not having the required items is to not drive like a tool and have the required items. :)

Agreed . The roads in central London are embarrassing. I usually drive across Marlybone road on route to Camden (Albany road ) . Itβs full of potholes and incredibly uneven . Ive seen better dirt track roads in My neck of the woods in Ireland .

Agree. I also mean that the road system is broken. Unsafe, inefficient and clearly geared towards extracting fines from motorists rather than safety.

Not as if pavements are much to write home about either. The street that I grew up in and the ones around it are so wonky, I find walking on the roads safer.

Driving in France π«π· on 07:01 - Feb 26 by Rsole | I also have what used to be called the Coyote App for RADAR = cameras. There are plenty of signs for fixed cameras but not for mobile and when you get tired, you donβt always remember to adjust after the signs so having a reminder like snooze on your alarm can be useful. The free version has a few ads to navigate but itβs a good safety blanket when activated and just running in the background. Think itβs called RadarBot these days. Has a sideline in identifying players unsuited to the championship regardless of their data. Agree completely about fuel prices - never fill up on the autoroute if you have a choice. Supermarket fuel is usually the best value and it gives you an opportunity to get a better bite to eat if you find a decent relais routier or similar. As with skiing, we always drive/ski through the 12-2pm period when most French people stop for what feels like a mandatory 3 course meal with wine (if itβs hot). |
Filling up on the autoroutes is more expensive. I've just come back from France and calculated an almost full tank costs about 7 euros (Β£5.80) more compared to a supermarket. But it's usually worth it for the convenience on a long trip. I think Reg document and Insurance Cert are compulsory. I always take them. And as many have said it's just embarrassing getting back onto the M20 at Folkestone after beautifully smooth French roads.
