Squad depth 22:52 - Feb 14 with 1981 viewsnumptydumpty

With a great performance tonight.

We still currently have Clarke Salter, Kolli, Dembele, Celar and Anderson, all currently injured as well, it's the amount of players, we have that we can call on, that is massive...

For many seasons, if Willock or Chair got injured, we were done for.

We have even temporarily added seemingly another couple of quality loans in Edwards and Yang also.

Suddenly we are competitive and can cope even if we lose half a team, heady days indeed !!

Yes the recruitment has been very good and well balanced, especially with all the injuries. Damn that evil Nourry fellow. Boo.

Never knowingly right.

Most of the subs last night were to give squad players some game time. Good management.

I am feeling really sorry for Liam Morrison though. He started the season so well before his injury and now can't break back into the team because of a loan player who won't be with us next season.

We have a very decent rounded squad........one of the best in the league.

We do, however, need a good CF and we would be a good, very good, team. What we have are OK.

I thought Lloyd was excellent when he came on last night,

Obviously his primary task was to press and stop their defenders stepping up with the ball which he did excellently,

But he also wins headers, lays the ball off well and his 1st touch & control was also excellent last night,

Also showed some real skill to beat a couple of defenders too,

A way to go, but last night showed real potential.

He’s been unlucky but whilst we are still in playoff contention then Edwards should play as he’s better. In the unlikely event we have nothing to play for then I’d drop the loan players and also any player who is definitely not going to be here next season and play those who will be here in August.

I think the squad will be fine for the rest of the season but come the summer, quite major upheaval will be needed. We potentially lose some excellent first teamers after June (JD, Saito, Edwards etc), there are a few who are in their limelight (Colback, Fox, Andersen) and a few who don't suit us (Madsen, Celar, Ashby).

I think one or two more of the Development Squad might be able to step up to be squad players but we will definitely need to get some new players in.

I wouldn't be too concerned as Morrison came on last night. After two injuries this season he needs to be bedded in gradually. If he can stay fit, he'll be a mainstay next season.

Agreed PRR, he puts big defenders under a lot of pressure, not consistent technically but is strong and keeps the CBs fully occupied. A bit like, and I don't like to compare from many years ago, Andy McCullock who incidentally I played with his brother Ross (He was also a CF and 'put it about').

I am repeating myself from another thread but we are massively sharing the responsibility with 17 players having scored this season, definition of squad depth methinks when you don’t have that forward. Apologies for repeating.

Frey is the only one we can't afford to lose to injury. We can shuffle the pack to cover anyone else, but no one else gives us what he does.

In terms of Edwards v Morrison then assume Marti will keep starting Edwards while there's still have an outside chance of making the playoffs. Same with Yang.

When the playoffs become out of reach then hope/assume he'll go with Morrison instead.

I might be in the minority but I really fail to see what it is he brings that we don't have elsewhere within the squad bar maybe being lucky,

Can't jump, wins very few headers, can't press as is just too slow, although for me brings Sylla levels of confusion & who knows what he's going to do next from falling over to swazzing a 30 yarder just pass the post,

I get Lloyd is acclimatising to this level as is Celar to the physicality, but I can't think of a single thing Frey brings other than maybe backing into his Centre Half rather than jumping to win the ball,

Hope I'm wrong but he's more Sylla than Hughill for me.

Think that "major upheaval" is a little exaggerated.

There will be squad churn. There always is. But the major surgery was last season. Dont think it will be Novemeber before the team starts firing (thats got the potentiall to bite me though).

The churn will mostly be squad players not first XI. I also expect Saito to stay.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

Agree to disagree. Frey is awkward but very effective and scores goals. And has skill. You can't judge a book...! I get he is not a clinical finisher, but there are very few of those around. And he DOES press which a lot of times is getting somewhat near defenders to up pressure from the front, rather than being uber-athletic whippet Greyhound.

Ah we were wondering who was going to replace Dykes in your heart to be showered with praise to the detriment of others who play in his position and it looks like you’ve picked Lloyd: lucky lad 😂

At the moment Frey is miles ahead of Lloyd in terms of what he offers and deservedly should start every game. Lloyd offers a decent alternative to come on late and hopefully will develop further over the next few seasons.

It depends what they do about the players who are OOC, between now and June 30.

I suspect they'll want to keep JD, Cook, Frey. Also turn Saito's loan into a perm deal. If so, it cuts down the churn to something less disruptive
