Snowing on 08:39 - Jan 5 with 1942 views | stevec | It’s like one long comedy sketch watching the BBC telling us how terrible the snow is. Reporter in Leeds seemed to be inside someone’s garden trying to find something you could at least make a footprint in. Desperately trying to find something to say he then warned that as the temperature rise there’s then the inevitable risk of flooding, somehow, from the inch of snow that has landed. When did everything turn so pathetic.

24/7 news on multiple outlets has caused competition so anything and everything is deemed newsworthy (most isn’t) and has to be sensationalised to get your attention. It’s actually dumbing everything down and becoming very juvenile.

You wonder what level of hysteria these numpties would have reached if they’d been around during the Winter of 1962-63? It would have been at least the beginning of a new Ice Age or possibly the end of the World.

I think the obsession with snow is mainly due to a couple of factors: - News about bad weather is supposedly the most compelling news going - Shifting baseline syndrome. To quote from Wikipedia: "This effect may occur with each human generational advancement when knowledge of changes to nature that have occurred before their personal perceptions, is forgotten or lost and an inaccurate baseline is adopted". Another example of this is lapwings being regarded as farmland birds when their frequenting of farms is a relatively recent thing; traditionally, they prefer marshland. Or something

Lapwings, lovely looking birds. Used to frequently see them on the grass beside the runways at Northolt Airport when we were driving past on the A40 but they haven’t been there for a long time now.

Wonderful creatures - also known as the peewit in imitation of their display calls, their common name describes their wavering flight. Their black-and-white colouring and round-winged shape in flight make them distinctive, but its the splendid crest that make them particularly stand out. Unfortunately they've suffered significant declines recently (largely due to intensive farming methods, loss of wetlands etc) and is now a Red List species. [Post edited 5 Jan 11:54]

You're the same age as me, and likewise, I have absolutely no recollection of this at all.... did it actually happen?? Although I have to admit my memory of what I was up to at that age is a bit fuzzy, well, certainly regarding weather, although I do remember my having a bloody fantastic summer!
