One thing that stands out 22:25 - Dec 14 with 2029 viewsbuilthjack

When Cabango and Darling play as out and out centre halves, with Grimes 30 yards or so forward, we do well. The centre backs go one left, one right, and know what they are doing.
Recently Grimes has gone back to his old trick of dropping in amongst them. Our game changes, we struggle. For heavens sake get him from there.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

The manager needs to sort this and perhaps he’s trying to but Grimes is a law unto himself. This is what happens when a player is more or less told they are undroppable .

Cabango is limited but a solid enough defender. He is not comfortable or capable of being one who can bring the ball out a la Van Dijk.Darling is better at it.
We do not need Grimes coming back to collect the ball from them
This is basic
This can be stopped
Why isn’t it

Both Cabango and Darling were caught bringing the ball out yesterday they were shut down and forced into errors.

That’s my point ,mun.
I must have expressed myself badly.
Apologies for that
I repeat,Cabango is solid enough but limited and in no way a footballing CH .
Darling is better but often loses possession eventually

It is what they are asked to do, would you say Key is a big cumbersome centrehalfor one of our better skilful players and yet a similarly has been caught out, we all have asked to get the ball forward quicker and to an extent we have but we have to realise that if teams are going to commit to closing us down the ball has to be released quicker, be it to safety or down the pitch to feet or into space we stopped picking the right options yesterday.

That’s why the manager needs Grimes to drop in and collect the ball because he also realises it isn’t the strength of the central defenders and with respect to Cabango I wouldn’t want to rely on him to start our offensive play from deep. Most teams play exactly the same way; the full backs push up, centre backs split, holding midfielder drops in, Leon did it in years gone by so it’s certainly not new to us but he had better players in front of him so it made his game more effective for the team.

The big problem is, Grimes is no Leon and when he drops deep we often put ourselves under pressure and concede silly goals.

When we are pressed hard we need to play the percentage balls and our wide players need to be making runs for when the ball is sent long.

A good football team just doesn't stick rigidly to one style, they can play short and keep possession but will also play the long ball when needed. Even the big 6 sides use the long ball now and then.

We continue to create as many problems for ourselves as the opposition do.

Grimes is not on the same planet as Leon was
I surely should not have all our play sanctioned by one player
It's incredible really
As for Key , he is not a defender to rely on any more than Cabango
He runs into trouble instead of away from it
I think he has qualities but again is being badly coached
He could be far better
Frankly, right now , If put him as a wide midfielder and put Naughton or Christie at right back
Not ideal , I know

We couldn't play with a back five, Williams had recreated some of the problems by having Grimes so deep and pushing the full backs up the field.

I didn’t compare the ability of them as Leon wins hands down. He was playing with generally far better players and a lot of the play from defence was through him I’m saying the roles they are expected to play are very similar. We had players with speed and intelligence and forwards who could hold the ball up and bring others into the game and this pattern of play happened at speed so the ball could be played through the thirds or the ball could be sent long early making it difficult for the opposition defence to set up. We’ve got none of that with this team and haven’t for a while so the options are limited in how we set up our attacking play from deep which in my opinion makes it far harder for the defenders and Grimes to influence. We need speed and strength as a minimum in January if we’re serious about the play offs but they don’t come cheap.

Grimes drops in because Ben and Harry are drawn wide because our fullbacks are caught up field, both Tymon and Key aren't great defenders.

It has been said of Ronald that he has regressed as well.

Key is doing what is being asked of him and that is travelling with the ball at his feet to get passed flat foot midfielders once he has done that he runs into trouble as players recover an others converge on him, he should be releasing the ball long before that. We have seen Cooper, Tymon, Darling, Grimes and the much vaunted Liam Walsh under Martin end up in dead ends ends because they haven't released the ball quicker having already taking players out of the game letting them back in close them down.

Edited to clarify that Ronald had said to have regressed as well
and correct spelling so it reads "runs" into trouble not tuns into trouble.

Rich
Shouldn’t players stand up to the coach if they feel uneasy about their role
This is what Captains,in my experience do.

he doesn't release the ball because he runs with his head down like a 9 year old in the playground-needs to learn to play with his head up!

Yes but a number of players are doing the same thing, the only thing I suggest is being asked is "drive forward to get past players but the message to release the ball is not realised or does Williams want them to "drive into the heart of their defence but it is shut down before they get anywhere near the defence"
Have seen Cooper do it just before Eom's injury he drove hard and hedid released the ball to Eom who came short, all done well, but then seemed unwilling to carry on his run and the move died. Makes me think at times we are being over coached and because of a lack of experience not doing what is the right and natural thing to do.

Grimes really struggled to make the decision whether to mark the extra man on Tymon's side because it would have left the middle exposed and yet Darling was free in the middle, that indecision just seem to spread to Tymon and Darling.
We saw similar in the friendly against Rio, Franco came to our left as Grimes seemed reluctant to move out of his middle position and he shut down that avenue of attack which had been effective for them and their forward momentum petered out
Sunderland a better team yes but Grimes was left in no man's land.

Loads of our players are doing it and getting caught and doing it far too near our goals with no cover,
instead
of at the edge of the opposition's box, once you have controlled possession in the opposition's box you are almost untouchables anything can happen.

This is exactly what Grimes, along with other senior pros, did after the defeat at Cardiff (on the back of a horrendous run of performances and results) last season. Playing style changed significantly the next game.
