Possession Based football. 09:40 - Dec 14 with 2288 views | onehunglow | Interesting article from Souness on how boring he sees this . He quotes RM on saying he’s embarrassed to only be on five points but won’t change his police . Possession stats mean nothing in reality. Most impressive passing stats involve the ball passed in the defending third and shows most passing to be backwards or sideways . It must be frustrating for a striker these days as they are not given the ball when they should . We are so typical of this . My opinion is that it is the primary reason so many home fans have walked . The fare is simply boring . Fans want goals, excitement in front of goals . Endless sideways passing really is boring . It’s time .

Yet when done correctly getting the ball forward quickly like Laudrup did made it both exciting and effective. Williams doesn’t have the tools nor know how unfortunately.

Williams should use what he has and deploy them using the ability they have . We can’t and shouldn’t play suicide football. We are led by a captain who is the embodiment of this madness ,recently winning a ta Kyle but then dribbling back to his own goal line only to conceded a corner. Utter madness . He doesn’t need to do this We don’t need this It needs to stop. It’s been this way too long

Possession Based football. on 19:35 - Dec 14 by onehunglow | We tried possession tiday in the form of Key and Grimes dribbling the ball into danger when nine was apparent . Gifting opponents kills fans spirits |
You forgot to mention a number of others who also got caught dribbling into congestion, once a number of players commit to closing down our player on the ball it means some of our players are spare and areas of the pitch have opened up but our aforementioned dribblers are so busy looking for the pass into feet when none is available instead they should be looking for spaces to turn the opposition defence also relieving pressure on ourselves. We did this in the first twenty with excellent results but we did it from a well set up defensive system that took into account how the opposition was set up. Once Sunderland went behind they had to change the way they played. Roll.on into the second half Sunderland set up changed they pushed players into the channels between our Centrehalves and our fullbacks we did not counter that, our marking was terrible, noteable on our left because that was the side closest to me in the East stand, Tymon had two players to mark with no help either from Grimes or Darling, he really didn't know who to mark and left the winger with time and space to run at hin and goals resulted from it. It has been mentioned in another thread that the old 4-4-2 formation would be ripped apart by possession based football but what formation did we adopt in that second half because we left ourselves wide open no point having attackers on the pitch if they are not ableor unwilling to get the ball to them. It would seem that we were set up in the second half to mark space not players. But they were a better team I see written, were Cardiff a better team when they similarly turned the second half around earlier this season, Williams really needs to look at our defensive set up and options taken as teams come out with the intention of attacking us, one size does not fit all, this problem has been seen this season at various times during games and we have to realise when to adapt.
Possession Based football. on 10:48 - Dec 15 with 607 views | Andyconky | The first thought is to play backwards. I get the possession thing but we appear so obsessed by it that it's the be all and end all. If you were a neutral you wouldn't know which way we were kicking sometimes. There are very few actual matches that are really any different from us. It's just sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If we won three on the trot I feel it wouldn't be turning a corner more just a case of sometimes it works for a while.

And yet again you are spot on. There is a time for possession football but the time always comes when you need a ball into space for a runner, a through ball or even a hoof upfield just to relieve pressure and reset the defence.

Indeed Basic isn’t it We have been in good positions I’m not going along with how incredible Sunderland were ,nor Leeds come to that . We showed we can complete against the “ best” but our coach ,IMO,and his ludicrous tactics, kill us . This is not the way to bring fans back. Yesterday many returned but would probably go back home seething

Exactly this. LW is wonderfully principled and probably a nice bloke but, it's not front foot football, it's not exciting, I'm bored and we make the same mistakes again and again AND it's not the 'Swansea way'

That is highlighted for me that Donald no longer receives the ball to run on to. Now he is getting possession facing his marker or markers. His ability to dribble or do something to create something I’m afraid is literally non existent. Same for MPH. Wingers being used who can’t do the job.

Possession Based football. on 21:47 - Dec 14 by SullutaCreturned | Possession alone doesn't win games as Russell Martin has so ably proved. You still need to get the ball forward, get into the oppo's third and at least shoot at goal. Having 70% possession but only 2-3 shots at goal (as did happen under Martin) is pathetic. You don't shoot you don't score. |
He got Southampton promoted to the Premier League in one season using possession based football. And thats what Swans are trying to do. You seem to be advocating against something that has already proven successful for our club. You might enjoy watching Cardiff City more …..

More complete nonsense from you. What did Martins "style" do fot our club? If anything he wasted a good chance for promotion by misusingthe squad when he'd proven it could get wins if used correctly. The Southamprton squad was always stronger than our squad, he took them up via the play offs but now that team are rooted to the bottom of the EPL and coming straight back down. This possession based style has seen thousands walk away from the Swans, I shouldn't be surprised you like it. What has it done for us that is positive? [Post edited 15 Dec 17:19]

It’s not successful and horrific to watch The thousands of empty seats are evidence as to what most think. Soton would have gone up with Rupert the Bear in charge with the quality of players they had. He will also take them down at the first shot and will be relegated with at least a month left . Trust me Is you have players to p,at this “ possession” game then fine,do it . We haven’t and shouldn’t .

Well we had less than 15791 with 2000 away fans there. On other days, with the usual away following we'd be around 14000. I don't agree it's horrific, the first half was decent yesterday but with no strength on the bench and players running out of steam, we had nothing left to give wghich is shocking. It's a combination of odeology over pragmatism and the running down of the squad by the previous owners. I really do think LW camn get results if he is allowed to sign 2 or 3 decent players. The sad thing right now is, we look like we need to be 3 up before we are safe.

We were more defensively minded and tighter earlier in the season and scoring few or no goals. We are playing more on the front foot now scoring goals but not tight at the back. All season we still haven't lost a game by more than one goal. Get the balance right and we will and we will be fine.

Martin's possession style isn't doing very well for him tonight, 4 nil down and not 30 mins in. Will he survive the night? BTW, when we had Dyer and Routs we often used Dyer's pace for an "out ball" putting it up the line for him to chase, his searing pace getting him to the ball and relieving the pressure. We did not and never had played the kind of possession game that Martin had us suffering under. We didn't, for example, play suicidal passes in our own box, the ball was sent not shuffled around our own area. You'd think you hadn't been watching us very long.

I’d say what Williams is doing is working. Despite the embarrassment that second half was. When you look at it objectively, we’ve got gaping holes in our squad and I’d imagine a bottom third budget. Some fans have unrealistic expectations and think we should be in and around the top six. The style he plays will deliver us a mid table finish, which would actually be punching above our weight.
