Slavery reparation 18:38 - Oct 24 with 2612 viewsjohnlangy

It's all the rage at the moment so I have a thought.

The idea would be that the UK government would fund this in whatever way it was agreed whether that be simply loads of money or development investment in those countries or whatever.

It's fair to say that very few people in the UK benefited from the slave trade when it existed. A small number of families made absolute fortunes while the vast bulk of the population got nothing out of it.

But then the government agreed to provide compensation to those slave owners to make up for their 'loss of earnings' from the vile trade when it was abolished.

So they borrowed £20 million to provide that compo and we have been paying back that debt for the last 200 years (until 2015). That £20 million, allowing for inflation, would now equate to £16/17 billion.

So rather than saying we should all pay reparation why not make those families pay it all back. Let's say £50 billion. Sounds a nice number to me.

And if it was argued that in some small way we all benefited from the trade then it could be said that we've already paid our dues because the £16/17 billion came out of ordinary peoples taxes.

Listening to Andrew Neil debating with a professor Kuhdi Andrew from Birmingham University I couldn't help laugh when the Proffesor said that the Arab slave trade wasn't considered as important as that of the Atlantic slave trade. Interesting conversation all the same

The root of the problems which highlight the current state of the UK is down to 14 years Tory rule - they need vilifying.

“ ordinary “ British people definitely did not benefit .
Take a look at living conditions at the time
Giving them reparations means more drugs coming our way

I thought "Surely they won't U-turn on this?". But then I read the papers today.

"PM rules out payments but could back non-cash slavery reparations Plan may involve debt relief and financial reform – but no apology ... Keir Starmer has opened the door..."

Clive Lewis seems to be the cheer leader, but yes, all the usual suspects are on board - Abbott and the same ones named in the Kaba thread. They cannot cast off their feelings of victimhood, even when they succeed in rising to very well-rewarded positions. I am reminded of the story of feeding the crocodile - whatever we give will never be enough.

I do wish we’d left those festering sores of countries alone .
However ,that would have meant the massive fortunes of the likes of meets Tate and Lyle wouldn’t have been made

Can you imagine where the money would go if we did pay trillions in reparation.

I'd bet the ordinary Caribbean citzen would see very little of it, whilst the usual trough feeders would have an absolute ball spending it.

Here’s a novel thought. Why can’t the money be alternatively spent on stopping actual slavery that is happening right now to real life living and suffering people in our country.

More people live in slavery today in 2024 than at any point of human history. Dawn Butler and Dianne Abbott don’t seem to give a flying rats arse about them.

Probably that wouldn't fit well with Diane's hierarchy of racism. It wouldn't just be black PoC.

It absolutely baffles me how someone can study history at one of the most prestigious universities in the world with all the greatest teachers and facilities money can buy and still know f all about history when she came out the other side.

A few things puzzle me, why are these people always going after the UK? Or have I just not heard them going after other colonial powers of 200 years ago?

Why do they think people today who bear absolutely no guilt for or made any profit from that slave trade should be made to pay?

If this becomes a legal battle should we be asking Italy and the Scandi countries for reparations for what the Romans and Vikings did? What about France and the Normans? It's all quite ridiculous, it really is, if my great, great, great grandfather had robbed a bank and was never caught, should I be made to oay the money back today? There's also the problem of exactly how much, how do you place a value on the thousands who were taken and how much work they did?
Are the reparations mob going after the African tribes who took other African tribes prisoner and sold them into slavery,, what about Mansa Musa's descendants, are they going after them?

None of this money went to the victims of slavery.

Reparations is a valid debate to be had.

Are you personally responsible for any of the slavery that happened 200 years ago? If the answer is no then why should you, why should any of us today have to pay for it?

Those whose fortunes were built on slavery, they should be the ones paying.
