I thought we won the second half on Saturday but couldn't score. No points for that though.

Was it a case of Blackburn were happy to defend the lead and sat deeper? Didn't catch much of that game my feed for the coverage was absymal

Only caught second half of Sheffield Wednesday game otherwise occupied and it all looked a bit scappy it seemed as if Sheffield in their pursuit of a goal left move room for us to exploit, once we got to grips a bit better with the expected early second half pressure but to no avail.

Do think we seem to be a bit unbalanced in our ability to compete in the box at set pieces, last night we seem to have a decent amount of height on the pitch but by the end we didn't with the introduction of smaller players, similar to Saturdays starting line up, where we conceded at a set piece. Similar putting high floated crosses into the opposition box with very little height in a team seems bizarre. Any cross into the box should be whipped in making it differcult for defenders giving more chances to smaller more mobile players.
Play with taller players can seem languid while smaller players seem to be busier, think our mixture of players picked and the tactics of play choosen does not match hence at times we cannot do what is required to win games.

Agree imo a corner should be whipped in at pace with low trajectory, ours and many others seem to be floated in giving everyone a chance of readjusting positions .Although I did see a perfect one last Saturday in a Welsh League game which beat everyone except for the player at the back post which was neatly tucked away.

Yesterday as on Saturday we had a lot of balls bobbling around in the opposition box, we just didn't have a natural striker on the pitch to put them away. I don't think hight is the issue at set plays, our defenders go up and there is plenty of hight there we lack a decent ball in. Plus we have one of the best defences in the league and hight isn't an issue defending set plays.

We have tried the ones to the back post but with Ronald and Eom coming onto them the timings their runs seemed off in open play and similarly at corners between Cabango and Darling there seems little understanding between them who attacks the ball and goes to back post.
Don't think either Ronald and Eom are renowned for their heading abilities.

People are always entitled to their opinion whether they attend or not. I've lapsed going down over the years on at least another 2 occasions since the 70s. That would have been more for financial reasons. I'm not in that position anymore so this a choice.
What would I bring back? I'm not really sure as the game in general appears to be going that way. The stats thing drives me up the wall. Listening to swans tv when the commentator seemed to claim a victory with us having twice as much possession as Blackburn. I thought now's the time to exercise the dog.
I watched Potters season when we lost 3-2 at home to Ipswich and thinking although we lost. I enjoyed that game.
Ok one thing to bring back would be entertainment.

Have to agree with the poor quality of the crosses and as for the ball bouncing around in the box someone really needs to them quicker even if not able to get them under control just make it difficult for the opposition to deal with, change the direction of the ball with any part the body which is legal surprising what stupid things defenders do while under pressure.
We do look under pressure at set plays and have conceded at them

We have only conceded 7 goals from 11 matches, only Burnley and Sheffield United have conceded less and that is from 10 matches. Our defence is not an issue as we all know, if we had a minimum of one decent striker we would be top six if we had two we would be pushing for automatic promotion. I wonder what opinions of the coach would be then, look at our squad and matches with and an open mind and things look differently.

The comments with regard to defending set pieces are not having a go at Darling and Cabango as you say our defence doing well there are one or two things that I thunk needs to change to enable our progression out of the defence quicker enabling the forwards , space, time and support which the centreforward has not been getting.

While it's hard to argue with the absolutes here, and I have to agree Darling and Cabango have been very good so far, I still thing we are over-egging our defensive strength and performance.

WBA for example, if they had their shooting boots on, it would have been a cricket score. We seem to have got much worse at preventing crosses into our box. And the stats show a high number of opposition touches in our penalty area. I do worry about when the time comes we turn up against a team that is not so profligate in their finishing.

Vigs has also been a revelation and is a big part of the equation...

Vig has been all we wanted . He is rock solid and should be with us for years to come .He is also steady yet he seems underrated munderoraised. Incredible really
Cabango is a young warrior and a wonderful young pro who again is one we should have tied down ages ago.
Darling more of a drama queen but he’s pretty skilful, skilful enough not to have his captain take over his position and shift him out of his space .

We have a solid back three ..

Which makes it more galling that the Club still haven't sorted out contract issues( for what ever reasons) with our first choice centre halves, we seem to have found a gem in the goalkeeping department , Key is developing well and Tymon is more tan capable. build from the back used to be the mantra and we seem to have done that pretty well so far this season .

ATM give Williams some slack, IMO whoever is responsible for us struggling striker/forward wise is the problem.
TBH I think he deserves some credit for what he has done with who we have!

When you’re weak up front, the best thing you can do is tighten up at the back.

We’ve gained 13 points and conceded 7 goals in 11 games. That’s the least outside the playoff places.

We’re desperately missing a goalscorer, we’re missing a Paterson type as well. Yes it’s frustrating, even boring at times. It’s the result of having no goals in the squad.

We don't have a striker capable of 15-20 goals. We don't have acreative midfiekder capable of making opportunities through the middle or wide players capable of decent crosses. We also don't have a midfielder capable of 5-10 goals.

Those are things a succesful team would have. That we cannot score a lot and don't concede a lot could make for a very boring season. We may only have conceded 7 but we only scored 8 in a W3D4L4 start.

I think a string of bets to either win or lose 1 nil this season could make a profit.

There again (and we were at WBA, Coventry and Blackburn) and I feel quite safe in saying the first 2 we rode our luck and the third, Blackburn scored then sat off. If they had gone at us it may have been different. Our defensive record is decent on paper but it didn't look quite so good in the watching of those games.
And most certainly our failure to really trouble oppo keepers is a genuine cause for concern.

Williams needs a bit more backing, I think with a decent striker (well 2 really) we could look up the table with some confidence but if we are relying on Cullen and Vipotnik all season it will be yet another drudge.

Fair comment. We’re not unbreachable.

I just don’t think he can do a lot else with the players at his disposal. Easily the weakest strike force in the Championship, would probably be close to it in league one as well.

Boring - absolutely. We’ve got a season of it to look forward to. This squad aren’t going to score many goals whoever is in charge.

He had (relative) backing at Notts County. They played attractive, successful football and scored lots of goals. No reason he couldn’t repeat that here given the same opportunity.

From what I saw last night I'd say one or two strikers wouldn't make us top six, not seen anything of Saturdays game, but what I saw last night was poor very poor on times, Peart-Harris looked better though, but still.

Correct.
Two strikers would still see the ball ballooned well over their heads from corners, crosses and pitted passes of hope.

Attacking in good positions, we then go sideways . We are not seeing things. It’s real

It stinks

I believe spending more money on striker won't help. Four have already been dispatched on loan including two 20-22 year olds. Two are at the club with another academy prospect in the wings now recovered from injury.

That makes seven. The club might go for a loan in January and hope one of the players on loan find their mojo.

Williams stated yesterday he was happy with his squad. He has to find a way. There is no quick fix. Most fans believe the problem is Williams s playing style. I believe Grimes has to be pushed forward to attacking midfield ( Kevin De Brunye role) and instructed to take risk s.This will mean more goal perhaps but a much worse pass accuracy statistic.

All managers declare he is the most talented player. Use him where it counts.

Of course he can improve them
He’s the co@ch
That’s what they do
Ronald should be collared and made to practise crosses for an hour non stop with sit ups as a punishment for getting them wrong .
A start

Grimes could practise corners so he can find our attacking players . Constant practise .
Practise is hard word but it improves everything we do.

It’s why proper musicians practise for hours at a time. They know what to do, but they have to practise to actually do it automatically. I see no sign our players practise anything

Finally, have grimes and Tymon work an hour a day in using their right foot . Tymon,in particular is pitifully one footed .

He can’t turn Cullen and Vipotnik into 20 goal a season strikers and he can’t pluck a creative midfielder who’s going to open defences from this group of players.

He can’t do a lot else means that’s the way he’s got to play. As boring as it is.

He can improve players I agree. Darling, Cabango and Cooper are all better this season than they have been in the past. He hasn’t had the same success with others, but even if he turns them all into better versions of themselves, we haven’t got a squad capable of playing free flowing, successful football like he managed at his last club.
1
Luke Williams ? on 17:58 - Oct 23 with 672 viewsDr_Winston

Williams deserves some credit for getting consistent performances out of Cooper, Darling and Cabango but he hasn't improved any of them in any meaningful sense.

For example, Cooper burst onto the scene as a technically limited but hard pressing midfielder who had the odd goal in him. Struggled for a year but is basically back to where he was when he first broke through.

Cabango and Darling are benefitting from being part of a settled defence for which LW is certainly due credit, but are they better players now or just better organised? Cabango's continued iffiness in possession would seem to suggest the latter.

To be honest there isn't really any one player who you can point at and state decisively that Williams has improved them. Quite a few have regressed in their performances from the start of last season. Tymon, Key & Ronald in particular.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

While I tend yo mostly agree, telling Grimes to be more adventurous in itself won't change anything. We still need a striker who can at least hit the target from 10 yards, Cullen is just not good enough and if Vipotnik is good enough he has yet to show it.

Pushing Grimes forward may help but he'd still have to do things much more quickly. I've said it before, he is not instinctive, he thinks too much and that thinking time costs us dear. It slows everything down.
Williams playing style is possession based, don't take too many risks and as a team we are yet again risk averse. It's boring and predictable
Teams allow us possession and when we finally get to the edge of their box they press us and we usually end up passing backwards 30 yards. If they continue that press we look vulnerable.
Now Grimes is a technically good player, with his left foot. It always irritates me when a good player won't even try using his "weaker" foot. There are/were local league footballers who can do that. To say he's our most talented worries me because it's like having a Ferrari and putting tractor wheels on.
