Never a straight Red Card 09:16 - Sep 29 with 10147 viewsParkRoyalR

Varane was trying to flick the ball away with the outside of his foot no way planting his foot on their player,

Both players went in equally strong and the Blackburn player hammed it up but the theatrics of their no 27 was a disgrace, worst I've seen, hope he gets dogs abuse in return fixture at ours,

Their players especially the no 27 conned the Ref and he naively bought it.

I've just seen a challenge by United's Masrouai that's three times as bad as Varane's, not a red, nor any discussion about it. I don't know if there's an angle others have seen that I haven't, but I just can't see it as a red, and wouldn't be shouting about it if it was against us either. He doesn't look out of control and it's not high. Irrelevant really, I guess. But for those saying 'why give the ref a choice? I think that's the point: imagine fans if he had just pulled out. He had momentum and tried to win it.

Bare bones.

This one really has divided opinion, hasn't it?

Have to admit, I'm far from sure. There was a time when I was confident in what was a yellow, a red, a peno etc. These days, the strongest phrase I ever use is "I think". I wonder if that's because I haven't played in so long. Or is it just because the rules or interpretation of them keep changing.

Who'd be a ref?

Red really needs to be a card of last resort for serious foul play or law-breaking to keep all the players on the field as far as possible. Varane committed a non-serious foul at worst, but ref bought it, and, added to the Smyth goal decision, reffed like he was paid in a brown envelope.

Agree - ref hesitated for ages, then gave into pressure from being surrounded (although, true to form, no-one except Frey on our side seemed to try to persuade him otherwise).

Refs are taught to take a second and breathe rather than rushing. Pawson did that and came to the correct decision of red.

Thread worth starting just for Bosh67's very funny line about Travis signalling for the Air Ambulance,

Travis really should have been yellow carded for his theatrics and its behaviour like that which makes it so easy for so called professional footballers to be criticized,

In the good old days (I'm not that old) Travis would have thought twice about behaving like that if he had to try and avoid any retaliation for another 45 minutes from the likes of a Fenwick or McDonald.

It's a strong Yellow, soft Red for me, but its their players reactions which make it really hard to take.

Just re watched it again and my opinion has changed slightly .
During the game I thought it was a bit of a desperate lunge with the ball running away from him.
But re watching it , Varanes boot is sliding along the grass at point of impact . It’s a yellow at worst as others have said and borders on another awful awful decision by the referee .

No doubt at all that the Blackburn players got him sent off especially Travis who I hope gets utter dogs abuse at LR later this season.

Watching it live, Frey’s reaction to the challenge suggested he thought it was a Red and I thought if I’m honest Cook as captain could have looked after his player a little better instead of turning his back on him immediately.

Splitting hairs but I thought Cook could have protested and been at the referee a lot more yesteday as Travis did .

I think if he gives a yellow no one says a word about it but you dive in like that you give the referee a decision to make and he can have no complaints

As this thread has shown, it's a subjective decision. This is why VAR was always destined to fail - three fans, ex players, managers can all sit and watch the same incident and not agree on whether it's a red, a penalty, a handball etc.

I think a couple of things influenced the referee: Santos was incredibly lucky not to be sent off about ten seconds before; and Travis' ridiculous histrionics made it look like Varane had killed the bloke.

But we need to control what we can control. It's ten seconds to half time, it's a neutral area of the pitch, do we need to be making that challenge? Roy Keane says this a lot about the red cards he got in his career - did I give the referee a decision to make? You can slow it down, you can argue the toss, but Varane has given the referee a decision to make.

It was a stupid thing to do.

Watching on Sky, I immediately said it's a sending off. The second angle they showed had me in the caution camp & the third angle was back to a red card. 10 seconds from half time & losing control of the ball, was not the time to make any tackle though.

I think it was worse than the challenge Fernandes was sent off for today, but not as bad as the Martinez one that only received a caution!

Exactly. It was stupid. I think it’s a yellow on some days and a red on others. But the point is, don’t make such a stupid challenge.

Varane needs to seriously up his level of performance. His passing wasn’t brave on Saturday and, off the ball, his positioning and tracking of runners is bad, a real concern.

It's all on the reaction from Travis. Both players lunge towards the ball and Varane makes contact with the defenders ankle. Yellow not red.

As mentioned in the thread, there was a far worse challenge on Anderson late in the 2nd half but because our players didn't react in the same way, the ref only gave a yellow.

Shocking that a experienced ref is swayed by players reactions or lack of reaction, and didn't judge the challenges on what actually happened.

Unfortunately, cheats prosper in modern day football.

30 yards further up the pitch with the attacker driving at the defence its a yellow. We've had refs this year who would not have shown a card at all. But to Clives point its needless and Varane needs to be coached out of going to ground as much as he does

Totally agree.
The ref took his time, quite rightly, but it looked a red all season long. Especially if you watch it from the camera that faces Varane. I cannot imagine any neutral quibbling about the colour.
If it had been a Blackburn challenge on Steve Cook, we'd have been screaming for a red.

Sure, Travis was screaming at the ref but Pawson was experienced enough not to to be influenced. As far as I could see, Baath was clutching his leg, well above the ankle.

Correct decision for me. The one I thought he got wrong, was Smyth's goal that was disallowed. Never a foul.

I'd like to get PinnerPaul's take? But he seems to have disappeared.

He was clutching his leg higher up because it ended up between Varane's legs and JV may have twisted as the opponent came in from the side.

Red for me

I’m just gutted that it was Travis (shite player, shite band) and Baath (who Varane apparently killed) who got their inevitable two goals

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Agree about Cook, and where the hell was he for Smyth's goal, which was as bad if not worse than the red card decision? Scratching his arris, apparently.

Agree completely. Ref had a shocker. Not a red card for Varane, Smyth foul was not a foul, even yellow card for whiney weiman was not a yellow card. Refs who get demoted from the Premier league are generally crap in the championship.

Fernandes' challenge was worse - higher and more desperate - though it still could have been a (very thick) yellow.

I'm glad you're not a ref then - or not ours anyway!

To use your own terms, this was worse: the ref takes a breath, cools his jets (not), then sends him off anyway. Which makes Varane a bit idiotic at worst and him a c*nt with an agenda.

Agree he gave the ref a decision to make, but in the Championship I want our players to be doing that, but in a planned way, if the team know what each other will do, they can work together to back each other up and influence decisions, do it well and the oppo will think twice and bottle a few.

This wasn’t a red for me, it was just a late tackle, it wasn’t dangerous, you have to look at the situation, he over ran the ball and dived in, he didn’t run 30 yards to recklessly lunge someone. If that’s a red by the book, the book needs to be rewritten in my opinion. I’d be appealing it.

No way Smyth’s was a foul before the goal, the ref’s been bought and sold by the Blackburn players yesterday. Bad day all round.

It's a silly phrase, really - many things in a game, bg and small, 'give the referee a decsion to make', from the heavens opening to a player sitting down to tie his laces. His job is to make good decisions rather than undermine the game or, as happened yesterday, help one team to win.

Hopefully, he and Blackburn'll get some kind of comeuppance, and I hope the return fixture at LR will be as tasty as we ought to make it for them if we've grown some balls by then.
