Car tax 14:31 - Sep 8 with 2579 viewssdm1508

Hi all.

Wondering if anyone can help. Just got a new car. On the forecourt now. Can't tax it as DVLA down for maintenance. Even phone line down. Is there any sort of president where you can still drive back without the tax as its out of our control? I know best thing would be not to crash the car but it is the other half's car so can't promise lol. So if anything did happen or you got stopped for whatever reason, you wouldn't get in trouble as we can show date of purchase and their system being down and therefore not our fault?

Use the paper slip from the V5 to transfer and then tax it tomorrow. That way DVLA doesn't know you've bought the car yet so it's still taxed.

I thought the dealer did that prior to you collecting it, it’s usually part of the deal that you have to pay the first year before you pick it up.

Purchased from a garage and ownership has transferred already so not sure how that would work

Then I guess the choices are risk it or pick it up tomorrow.

No normally as part of final purchase you tax whilst there. Don't tax ahead in case something does wrong because then a car is taxed in someone else's name if you don't end up buying

I usually had classic cars which were tax-exempt. Is that still the case ?

Yes - as long as they're built before Ist Jan 84 (ie 40 years old)

My ol' dad used to say “son, if you're going to view a used car, don't go when it's raining”
Why not dad ?
“Well, you get all wet”

If the car is new then the dealership has to tax it prior to collection. That’s why you get the car price and then the on the road price

That’s what I meant but haven’t got the capacity to express myself properly!
