Barnet Game Being Streamed Live on 22:07 - Mar 5 by 49thseason
Dreadful form since Jan 1st Pl 10 L 7 D 1 W 2
For 11 Against 18
7 points...
Sleepwalking to relegation.
I know the club has bigger fish to fry at the moment but we can’t forget about the mess on the pitch.
If we have a club to support at the end of the season, serious changes need to be made over the Summer, it’s that simple. This squad is more than good enough to be challenging at the right end of the table

That could have been any score in the second half. They were camped in our penalty area. How we can look completely different to a week ago is a major worry.
It’s been said a million times, but until we start concentrating on what we are good at as opposed to what we aren’t, this could end disastrously. Minimum four points required from two home games.
I think Jim is the problem, not the answer. He lacks to learn from his errors and continues to think his preferred style of football, is more important then winning games, we are seeing the same problem in McNulty, we did in BBM and Stockdale.
I like McNulty as a person, but have given up on him as a manager, I cannot see us achieving success under his leadership. I wonder sometimes, if he thinks he is managing City. Other posters have pointed, if Premership players struggle to play possession football and playing out of out the back, how does McNulty expect our players to do it. I am convinced that McNulty's perseverance with possession football as cost us this season, despite us having a squad better then many in the national league.

Not sure the starting XI from tonight is.
Seen nothing in Brooks to make me think he should be a professional goalkeeper. Gordon, very middle of the road at this level, EEL whilst steady has too many mistakes in him, Sassi not the answer, Armstrong we've extended his loan surely out of numbers necessity.
We really really missed Gilmour and Clayton tonight, there was absolutely nothing between the defence and our anonymous forward line.

I get the "love in" last week with Big Jim. Lovely person, genuinely committed to the club and its supporters. He's been solid through difficult times behind the scenes. Very likeable man, for all the right reasons.
After watching that rubbish tonight, you have to reflect. We were torn apart down our right hand side first half. No tactical change by the manager to address it. We were torn apart down our right hand side second half. No tactical change by the manager to address it. Big Jim has forgotton more that I'll ever know about professional football, but not to spot what was going on. Bewildering.
We've won 1 of the last 8 games. We've lost 6 of the last 8 games. Apart from two spells of good football v Chesterfield and Wealdstone, the rest has been woeful.
Time for an honest man to recognise it and sort it.
Decent turn out at "Our Spot". Didn't hear a positive word about the team's performance.

At the risk of stating the obvious. The 21 games where we have got points on the board Jim McNulty has been the Head Coach for those matches as well. So how can we replicate what we have got right and avoid repeating that which causes fans so much frustration?

You've changed your tune, only a few weeks ago you were criticising me for dissing a team performance and lauding it over McNulty to anyone who would listen....has the worm turned?
For all the effort that many folk have/are doing to save the Club we need a Team and Management set up that's worthy of support at least. Summat to pitch up at the COA to watch, not this tripe.

No, I haven’t. Go back and read through my posts where I’ve consistently criticised our inability to not mix up play effectively. I’ve also been critical of selections since the turn of the year. Those factors have put real pressure on the manager in the last two months.
Difference is i’m fair and can recognise what we are good at and where the manager has to do better in ensuring that happens. Part of that includes pointing out that people are wrong to say we only play one way and it’s “tripe” when we “pitch up at the COA”. Because it wasn’t seven days ago, was it?
So no, I haven’t changed my tune, I just choose to post after each game and say what I see. Not only those where we lose to score points.

Absolutely. I must admit my support in Jim is wavering. I gave him a pass earlier in the season with our terrible injury list but lately we’ve been closer to full fitness and we’ve got a lot worse. We’ve played very well at times, and I don’t think the football is as boring as many say it is, but this squad is more than good enough to be challenging for the top 7.
I don’t personally see the new investors getting rid of him though. I believe they were watching the fans’ forum last week. They would’ve seen how much adulation he received from those present, and Gauge was clear to point out that he’d be mentioning that to the new investors too. No new owners are going to jeopardise any nascent relationship with fans by getting rid of someone they believe the fanbase adores.

The difference with Wealdstone last week was they had no plan, they didn’t prevent us passing through, they were uncommitted in their first ball pass and Hayes predominantly enjoyed the space.
We look good when the opposition plays like that. More to do with the opposition than us.
Ebbsfleet with limited resources beat us twice this season, because they had a plan, kept their shape and took their chances. Barnet with better players and a similar plan just set up camp in our half.
The problem is Jim is under no pressure. The fans forum love in was nauseating to listen to for me. The chairman said if he wasn’t chairman he’d just have a season ticket sit back and “enjoy the football Jim’s producing”. Really? In what walk of life is such failure and mediocrity celebrated? It goes to the post match interviews. Anodyne passive questions which give McNulty the opportunity to ramble on, explains what a great character Ebanks is for apologising for his mistake, letting him muse maybe the long journey affected the performance.
How would McNulty respond to some real questioning? Eg Consistently bottom five form since the turn of the year, four points from the drop. What are you going to do about it?
As a club, fans, board, commercially we are too accepting of failure. McNulty and Gauge are too quick to jump on the excuses bandwagon.
Looks like we have a must win v Oxford City on Saturday. Let that sink in.

Happen JM knows his days are numbered?
Might explain the "body language" thing too...
The team traveled down to Barnet to play on the same day. Because you never even played playground football at school, you've completely over-looked this factor in explaining this defeat.

I've been seduced by Jim and his slick media training for too long. That performance last night was like a lackluster Jim Bentley one. Are the players playing for the manager ? Doesn't feel like it.

You're still in the school playground, mentally, being bullied

And, they stayed over before Ebbsfleet, a game we also lost possibly even more inept given the difference in quality of Ebbsfleet and Barnet. Or did you overlook that detail.

Just on the 'Ebbsfleet limited resources' point.
They are under the ownership of Kuwaiti investors and lost £33,000 a week in season 2021/22, paying £314 in wages for every £100 of income, so they are certainly throwing money at the 'project'.
I'm not defending last night in any way at all, by the way, and agree it was the worst I've seen us this season while in possession of a strong squad, but it's important to get the narrative right about our opponents at this level.

Thanks - which also helps make the point it’s not just about investment. Ebbsfleet have been bang average this season, but can easily work us out. It’s about a winning mentality, with a coherent plan. Let’s hope the Americans understand that.

Nice guys dont win prizes.. no matter that they had been on the train to London, these are supposed to be fit young men ... its a good job, this lot were not told to cross to Normandy in 6 foot waves and fight their way up the beach..... McNulty isnt capable,of locking the dressing room door and verbally battering his team, something every manager has to have the capacity to do or at least have an assistant to do. The acceptance of defeat comes too easily if there are no consequences for poor performances beyond a few platitudes...... This tippy tappy, to me,to you, football has to have a backbone of grit and determination to fall back on when the tippy tappy isnt working... plan B ... if you cant win, don't fkin lose!

Surely someone will work it out eventually that this type of football will take us further down the pyramid and drive the crowds away. When Keith was in charge playing his type of football even when we didn’t play well there was always a chance we would win because we created chances and he was prepared to gamble in order to try and get something out of the game. Without being entertained people simply won’t come to watch Dale it’s already slipped down the list for a lot of people due to economic pressures so it’s going to take something special for people to justify stumping up their hard earned cash to watch Dale. I think the Americans will make a change as I’m sure they will engage with the fans and be left in no doubt what people think about the product on offer.
On balance, I still love Jim to bits, feel very positive about his future with us, and enjoyed almost everything about his part in last week's fans forum.
Listen back to it at 48 mins though and I think there was an insight into the culture that's maybe seeping onto the pitch in recent weeks - 'what a platform to start from, that's what this season is'.
I understood where that sentiment came from, but I thought it would have been a more appropriate comment to make in May not with 12 games to play.
In terms of culture development, off pitch empathy, aligned values to who we are - Jim's perfect for me. But one thing I'd be keen for him and the team to develop next season is a more ruthless intensity, game in and game out. That balance seems to be one the best managers all possess.
We seem a bit like Arsenal of the last decade or so until the penny has started to drop for them recently - likeable and easy on the eye but lacking a killer instinct and winners mentality. Next season when we have the likes of Wealdstone on the back foot I want us to walk off the pitch having scored 6, like Arsenal did on Monday night and probably wouldn't have done in recent seasons.
Missing Clayton for so many games probably hasn't helped, he clearly drives high standards. And I expect if the takeover goes through that might see greater accountability start to come from the boardroom towards performance and results.
So overall, whilst I reckon 45 points from 36 games is a good few less than we might have expected given the qualities of this manager and playing squad, I also think it will come (maybe as soon as the next fortnight given the upcoming fixture list) and the future looks bright. I just want Jim to evolve ever so slightly into a manager I'd less like to go for a pint with than I do right now!

BJ is underperforming and the squad is also underperforming given our status as full time professional club.
His body language post match was worryingly matter of fact rather than bitter at defeat. He admitted we were hopeless with the ball and simply praised EEL and the defenders for doing their defensive jobs!
The vibe at the club (home games) has not translated into performance or entertainment and this is now putting the manager and players under pressure with a must win home game against bottom of the table Oxford City.
I think the Americans will scrutinise all of this and more which can only be good for the fans in the longer term. We still have to worry about this season.
As an aside, unfortunately it sounds like Devante is possibly finished as a professional footballer which is another hammer blow.

All this talk of 'The Americans'. There were more than a few dissenting voices last night, watching the Barnet game, from seasoned Dale fans. There are a good few people with serious reservations about the manner in which this is being presented to us and the expression' gun to the head' was heard more than once.
I wouldn't be taking anything for granted just yet. Many a slip twixt cup and lip.
