Hornets on Sunday 19:31 - Feb 24 with 299530 views | EllDale | They’re tweeting that their “matchday operations” are being restricted for the home game against Barrow on Sunday for reasons that they don’t want to divulge at the moment. The bottom line is that the crowd capacity is limited to 920 and there will be no cash admissions on the day. Wonder what that’s all about?

Thanks to pioneer and rugbyleaguerecords.com it's possible to see the attendances reported and it does make poor reading for Mazey and Co. On 25 February 2022 this article appeared online: https://www.rochdaleonline.co.uk/news-features/4/sport-news/145009/reduced-capac Due to a change in operating procedure, only half of the main stand will be open during Sunday’s game between Rochdale Hornets and Barrow Raiders in the fourth round of the Betfred Challenge Cup. Main stand east (right of stand), blocks A, B and C will be accessible from turnstiles 1-3. The main stand west will be closed. Stadium capacity is limited to 920 including hospitality, press and guest areas. Fans of both clubs are advised to book early as the game could reach capacity and become sold out. Reviewing rugbyleaguerecords.com the actual attendances this season are as follows: 30/01/22 - vs Midlands Hurricanes - 688 27/02/22 - vs Barrow Raiders - 515 27/03/22 - vs North Wales Crusaders - 448 10/04/22 - vs Hunslet - 415 15/04/22 - vs Oldham - not published 07/05/22 - vs Midlands Hurricanes - 327 Average of the 5 games published - 478.6 Now, there are two very interesting questions that comes from that data. (1) Why were Hornets bleating on Twitter - which started the OP - about having their matchday operations disrupted when they have been nowhere near the available capacity of 920 and operating at just over half full? (2) Why hasn't the Oldham game on Good Friday attendance been published? The story driven out was a sold out game so 920? I'd have thought that would have been on there. Bizarre. Looking at the same website for 2019 attendances are well down.

Hornets on Sunday on 20:41 - May 11 with 5156 views | EllDale | Two things spring to my mind here after seeing the above figures. The first is why did so many (comparatively speaking) fans attend the first game against a development area team with a negligible away following? The second is that the first two games, against Midlands Hurricanes and Barrow, were Challenge Cup ties and as such the away team were entitled to their share of receipts after VAT and allowable expenses eg stewarding had been taken into account.

That’s another really impressive signing at League One level. He’s kept himself fit playing for GB Police in the off-season too so should hit the ground running.

If there’s no response to this signing on the rugby forum, there really is little hope. Granted, Mazey has rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way (including me with his ridiculous post belittling fan ownership) but him, the Hornets board and Matt Calland and the management team are doing their utmost to promote rugby league in the town but are essentially pissing in the wind. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He certainly has and he continues to make little digs via his Twitter account (an example being in reply to an Altrincham FC tweet). He’ll deny it of course. He’s comes across as very narcissistic and I can’t quite put my finger on where I’ve seen his type before…

Makes you wonder where all the money is coming from to keep signing these older players. Average crowd of say 500, £16 max of which 20% is VAT so £13.33 for the club. 12 games - 10 league, 2 cup. 500 x 13.33 x 12 = £80,000 per season. Take off the cost of 20+ players, travel to 10 games, rent, training costs, kit costs and there isn't much left. Less than £7k per game. The central funding cuts have crippled rugby. Makes you wonder how Hornets are funding all of these experienced players on such a shoestring.

Even worse than that kel - whilst bigging up these old, not catching players signed in a panic Mazey misses the heart of the community stuff that really matters to people who have followed Hornets for many years. For example, Glyn Shaw, a former player, passed away recently and the official Hornets comms doesn't even mention it, despite every one of his other former clubs doing so. https://www.wigantoday.net/sport/rugby-league/glyn-shaw-former-wigan-and-wales-p It's not even registered. Fans know though. They'll do an article on it tomorrow though; prompted by reading others mention it, just you watch. The row over the 100 year anniversary of Hornets winning the Challenge Cup was another example of him not even knowing that mattered. "The Hornet" could do to brush up on his or her history!

Yep those numbers are true. 10 league home games and remember season ticket holders paid no more than £135 incl VAT. So about £10 a game ex VAT. If ticket income is any higher than £70-£80k a year I'd be surprised. You can't run a club on that. I bet they are privately relieved to have good stadium facilities without any of the overhead
Hornets on Sunday on 15:22 - May 13 with 4513 views | EllDale | Another loan signing this afternoon, Phoenix Laulu-Togaga'e has arrived a two week loan from Hull KR. Predominantly a fullback I think.

Hornets on Sunday on 17:41 - May 13 with 4412 views | judd | They are strange loans of such a short period - perhaps football fans are just not used to it. Nevertheless, they are giving it a good go at getting out of this division and good luck to them. I see one fan on Facebook is claiming that the limit on attendance is not down to Hornets and this post has been liked by their chairman.

Hornets on Sunday on 17:45 - May 13 with 4399 views | EllDale | This is exactly why the EFL insisted on longer, fixed, loan periods to stop a club shipping in players for one or two games. It’s better than the ridiculous dual registration system which preceded it but only just. As you say fair play to them if it gets them promoted.

Hornets on Sunday on 19:06 - May 15 with 4017 views | RAFCBLUE | Hornets are now 0 from 2 against the proper teams in Betfred League 1 this season (Crusaders and Keighley) Attendance given out as 1,800 which must make Mazey and Co wince given their very limited efforts made as an out of town owner playing to crowds of 400. The three ringers only kept the score as it was; ridiculous penalty count is awful game management and having to take yellow cards to stop Keighley is not going to win the game. No sign of Mazey on Twitter either, typical "sing when you're winning" type.

The bad result today has almost made next week "must win" for Hornets if they have any genuine aspirations of a promotion to the Championship. That's because of the way the playoffs work mean that to go up if you don't win the League (very unlikely now for Hornets) then unless you finish 2nd or 3rd then you have to play at least one away game at a better team; the playoffs being rigged towards the stronger teams. The top 7 should be Crusaders, Keighley, Swinton, Doncaster, Hunslet, Oldham and Hornets. Hornets look like they are going to have to do that via the playoffs with two, possibly three games. The next run of fixtures will tell how strong they actually are as they are actually playing the top 7: Next week: Doncaster (h) Next 4 after that: Swinton (a), Hunslet (a), Midland Hurricanes (a), Oldham (a) If they are not in the top 4 after those games, then Mazey's expensive Dad's Army approach looks like the wrong one. Hornets playing on Saturday again too in another odd marketing ploy given that Rugby League is a Sunday game.

Hornets on Sunday on 20:58 - May 15 with 3823 views | EllDale | They’re good enough to beat all of those teams. I still reckon that they might need to win their remaining games to finish in the top two. No room for error at all though. And I agree with your comment about playing home games on Saturday afternoons. That must be through choice surely?

Must be. I don't know why though; most people have commitments on a Saturday which is the exact reason why most Rugby League is played on a Sunday! IMO there's no way that Hornets will finish in the top 2 now. The wheels came off today with the ill-discipline and vs a better team and they won't finish above Crusaders and Keighley now. Can they finish 3rd (which would be a home semi final)? They'll need to tighten up defensively. Swinton will go above Hornets if they win their game in hand. 4th or 5th means a home eliminator before a tricky away tie at either 2nd or 3rd. That's two ties to win back-to-back to be promoted. As Fylde found out today 2nd to 7th is a complete lottery.

and the trl board site is in overdrive with hatred of anything to do with Dale. Sadly its a small number of pathetic hangers on who do not represent the long standing hornets fans. Jonny come latelies blowing smoke up the orifice of the owner. One even revealing the name of another poster and requesting an opportunity to confront him or her. All against board rules but it seems the moderator doesnt do much moderating. Surprising what one defeat can do despite loading up with two week signings.
