This isn’t about Blair, he’s history.
Labour have made TUC leaders and a whole bunch of others Lords, the Conservatives have also made large numbers of their backers Lords. I don’t agree with the patronage process, but that’s the system we have. Personally, I’d bin the HOL and replace it with an elected chamber.
The issue I was pointing out is that Boris had overruled advice from the Appointments Commission to elevate Cruddas to the HOL, he’s the first ever PM to ignore /overrule advice of this nature. Shortly after Cruddas donated £500k to the Conservatives.
We have to have standards in government, if we don’t then we’ll end up like Zimbabwe, Belarus and numerous other dictatorships. |  | | |

I'm 100% with you Major. However, as I've said before, to change the systems and toughen up the rules we need the politicians to do it and they won't change the current "fully loaded trough" for a means tested trough! Neither will they make new laws that could see themselves locked up. They hated it enough when the expenses scandal broke. I still wonder what they gave the scapegoats who did go down? There must have been some kind of sweetenener because the unlucky few must have some very tasty secrets. | |
