So, China.. 17:32 - Mar 29 with 8317 views | PozuelosSideys | When this mess eventually ends, whenever that may be, but it will. What will be done with China? Obviously its unlikely that there will be any aggressive measures and nor should there be. But should other countries look to put political pressure on their Government (or some other means) to try and get their population into the 21st centuryin terms of food hygiene, diet (for want of another word) and the medieval way in which they consume the types of protein which has put the world in this position. China are trying to put themselves forward as a modern, technologically advanced, and somewhat wealthy nation (not for the majority of the population to be fair, but those in decision making positions of influence are), yet Coronovirus is not the first ill to come from their nation. SARS is one, but other people probably know of others. Will China care? Can they be influenced? Can global public pressure influence anything if everyone just refused to buy their products? Will people just forget about this? You can argue this isnt Chinas issue, its a Global one, as some newspapers have started writing about today. But the direct link between the consumption of bats and Chinese food markets and the direct links to viral outbreaks were papered back in 2007. It was spooky that this was called out 12 years previously and came true. Are there others? What can be done?

So, China.. on 12:50 - Mar 30 by Thebus | Not necessarily. Maybe the Chinese have actually counted those who have actually died from the virus and not of those who have died who may also have had the virus. It’s the figures in this country and places like Italy & Spain that people should question. |
In either case the numbers are suspect.

Yes without doubt. The reality maybe that only a tiny percentage of people actually die from the virus. Also it’s quite possible that millions of people in this country may have already contracted the virus and had no symptoms whatsoever.

I don't believe the numbers that China have come out with one bit. A virus that went unchecked for a month in a City of 11 million people, which is part of a country whose total population is nearing 1.5 billion, couldn't possibly have such a low infection and death rate, and also bring the virus under control so quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if there has been 10's of thousands of deaths and is still on the increase. [Post edited 30 Mar 2020 20:04]

If I remember correctly the authorities are afraid that the wet markets will just go underground if "officially" closed/banned and then they can do no monitoring.

It’s speculation at this stage. The pangolin is seen as a strong possibility as there’s a genetically very similar disease (according to recent reports) but the early cases were not all linked to the markets in China (which is a change to what was initially reportEd). The markets seen in China, and many other countries for that matter, are genuinely sickening. For all sorts of reasons. But it’s too soon to say exactly how this virus took off.

Just pointing out that research by experts in the field indicates an extremely high likelihood of bats (the only true flying mammals) being at the origin of the transmission route. Seems both communism and rampant globalisation played a significant part. We surely need to live a simpler life if we want one at all. This is IMHO a very interesting, article about the Chinese Bat Woman a renowned specialist, who has spent much of her life investigating bats and their viruses. Plus another leading expert saying “It’s crystal clear that bats, once again, are the natural reservoir” https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-chinas-bat-woman-hunted-down-viru ‘The genomic sequence of the virus–now officially called SARS-CoV-2 because it is related to the SARS pathogen–was 96 percent identical to that of a coronavirus the researchers had identified in horseshoe bats in Yunnan, they reported in a paper published last month in Nature. “It’s crystal clear that bats, once again, are the natural reservoir,” says Daszak, who was not involved in the study’ (Dr Peter Daszak is a leading expert in this field) https://www.ecohealthalliance.org/personnel/dr-peter-daszak ––––––––––––––––––– ‘Full-length genome sequences were obtained from five patients at the early stage of the outbreak. They are almost identical to each other and share 79.5% sequence identify to SARS-CoV. Furthermore, it was found that nCoV-2019 is 96% identical at the whole genome level to a bat coronavirus. The pairwise protein sequence analysis of seven conserved non-structural proteins show that this virus belongs to the species of SARSr-CoV. The nCoV-2019 virus was then isolated from the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of a critically ill patient, which can be neutralized by sera from several patients. Importantly, we have confirmed that this novel CoV uses the same cell entry receptor, ACE2, as SARS-CoV.’ (Disease now named COVID-19 and causative virus named SARS-CoV-19 by WHO / International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses respectively)

I wasn’t disputing the bat bit. It’s the method of transmission from bats to us that’s in question. Bats harbour all sorts of diseases but they don’t get directly to us. It certainly didn’t pass to humans from someone eating a bat according to experts!

Yep that’s why I originally said ‘and thought to have possibly transitioned via snakes or pangolin‘ I am not sure if any viruses have ever been passed directly from bats to humans but from what I have read there’s usually seems to be an intermediary. Of course that doesn’t negate the future possibility of bats indirectly (or even directly) passing on even more dangerous viruses. This has of course long been warned of since the earlier transmissions of similar viruses. Sure there is nothing new except that our intensive way of living and treating animals has allowed to take hold and spread.
