End of season do - £65!! 17:59 - Mar 19 with 50786 viewsChaffRAFC

https://www.rochdaleafc.co.uk/news/2018/march/event-gala-dinner--awards-night/

Utterly ludicrous in my book. Bollocks to a meal and all that stuff.

Very good chance this will be the end of season do after a relegation from League One!

Genuinely hope nobody goes in the hope that the club finally take a step back and look at the decisions they make!

And they wonder why I think "Team Rochdale" is dead.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

How is sixty five quid pricing normal working class people out of the do? Im working class and I could afford that for me and my partner if We desired to go. This is an over reaction by people who think they have a status and standing at the club as a sort of superfan which only exists among a dozen or so people and in their own heads. Like I said there is a catalogue of shite to complain about this season but people keep quiet, and criticise others for having a go at management and directors in nearly every other aspect of what’s going on at the moment with regards to what’s happening on the pitch.. What’s the reaction to this on the supporters Facebook page? I bet it hasn’t even been mentioned. This forum is not a litmus test of what your average Dale fan thinks.

Anyone who was in the Dale Bar tonight would have seen what the average Dale fan thinks. As does the statement from the Trust.

I don’t think my opinion matters, I believe the thoughts of any fan matters. If they have an issue that doesn’t interest/affect me, their thoughts and concerns are no less valid and should be addressed if possible.

Of all the shite we have endured as fans this season from Hill blaming us for defeats to directors telling fans to fook off (not to mention all the dogshitteam performances) the one thing the trust decide to take hindrance to and issue a statement on is the fact that the club are making the awards bash a bit swankier.

This one is part of the attitude to which you allude occurs in other incidents.

A position of Us and Them will turn into Them and Them if things carry on as they are.

Said weeks ago the Chairman needs to reign in the Director causing all the issues.
The Club has survived due to strong link between Supporters in the Stands and Supporters in the Board room.
The Trust did all they could to advise the club not to proceed with the plans for the function and were again ignored.

The relationship between a business and its customers is almost at breaking point.
This can't be allowed to continue.

I've pondered this issue long and hard over the last couple of days.
I used to work in a similar capacity to Russ at another sporting club of a similar size to Dale and you're always looking to maximise what these days are called "income streams".
I have no doubt that the club has a lot of new names in it's contact book following the goodwill surrounding the Spurs game and wants to expand it's corporate business as a result.
However......
In my experience £65 is a bit steep. If you get 300 guests in a room (normally 30 tables of ten people) you can make loads of money from a decent raffle, a keenly contested auction plus one other fund raiser like stand-up bingo. You won't make much from the food so make as much as you can from a captive audience, especially when they've had a drink. £10k should be a reasonable target.
What I would have done is have a series of events, all decently spaced out and reasonably priced, say £35 per head.
We've room at Spotland so there's no room hire and existing caterers who can produce a neat three course meal.
I would have kept the awards night in the same format. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I would then have had three dinners:
1. To celebrate our cup run but incorporate it with a celebration of ten years since our first appearance at Wembley. Get as many of that team back as possible as a reunion.
2. Have a pre-season launch. Use Jeff Stelling then and save money on his fee by offering to donate 10% of the proceeds to Prostate Cancer. You'll get businesses taking tables of ten then to help a charity.
3. Have another dinner in 2019 to celebrate 50 years since promotion. Make it a reunion again, although the likes of Chris Harker, Joe Asworth and big Reg won't be there I would pay to mingle with the likes of Billy Rudd and Steve Melledew once more.
I reckon that you'll make money from all those than one overpriced function at a venue which won't lend itself to the occasion.

Beautifully spun.

If only it were about making it "a bit swankier".

The new format (for one year only, yeah?) EXCLUDES families and children in particular.

The Rochdale end of season awards night is unique and has been accessible, affordable and hugely enjoyable in its' current format for many years.

Photos I post on Facebook each year with my now 10 year old son with his favourite players attract envious comments from fans of many other teams.

I told my son last night that he could not go to this seasons' awards night and he wanted to know what he had done wrong. I told him he had chosen to support a club that now appears to have allowed an egotist to run amok on all things commercial and piss off a myriad of supporters, some of whom were now being invited to stump up a grand to sponsor their own award. Makes it swankier, see?

I listened to a member of SMAC at half time last night give the most passionate, heartfelt speech on what he thought of the awards situation. I wish I could have recorded it and played it on here. It was brilliant.

There was an outbreak of "You can stick your gala dinner up your arse" ( © Sandyman) when Fleetwood netted their second last night. People joined in and a good number laughed. That's a kind of litmus test. I suspect it will get a louder rendition at the next match.

With regards other issues that have occurred this season, this is a forum where people will agree and disagree. Someone's view of a director smirking was balanced by another fans argument that the questioning was naff. Another fans view of a director swearing was that he was responding to personal abuse.

In Swankygate, we have an assault on a huge number of fans and awards givers without any prior consultation and with complete and contemptuous disregard for the fine Trust board members who stood up to the railroading of an ego trip.

I hope it's a fookin' disaster and the club rids itself of the bad smell emanating from the actions of a fool.

This is a fantastic post.

To those who say £65 isn't that much, fair enough, up to yourselves and if you can afford it then fair play. I'm working class and I can't afford it, not even close and I suspect the vast majority will feel it's too much and not bother to go because of that.

The fact that when I walked into the Dale Bar yesterday, I walked straight into what was effectively a Trust representative surrounded by aggrieved supporters so it's not a small deal, not at all.

I remember going to a fantastic do at what was then nemesis when In the season we lost out to rushden in the play offs.

Sit down meal with 2 players at your table, then just informal getting pissed with the players and just having a good chat, pictures taken and autographs. I remember chatting to Neil Edwards, Graeme Atkinson, lee mcevilly, Kevin townson etc and it was a great informal night.

I honestly can’t remember the cost but seem to think it was about £30 which was fair enough for a good night out. I could afford £65 for a one off event but no way would I attend this pretentious garbage. Carriages ffs!!!

Club have scored more own goals this season than Tony Brown managed in his whole career!!!!

I too went into the Dale Bar. I counted 5 Trust people, spread throughout the room.

Each one was surrounded by a group of angry supporters, all complaining like mad about the Gala dinner.

If the Director who has pushed this stupid stupid idea could only have seen the passion and ill feeling amongst genuine long term Dale fans, .

Instead, he was probably massaging his huge ego in the Boardroom. what an idiot we have allowed into our midst.

I’m not spinning this in favour of the club. I think the club and the management this season have been arseholes and the fans have copped for some right shit. That said I don’t think this should be the straw that broke the camels back. Hill telling the fans not to turn up should have been or a director telling fans to fook off should have been. And the club should put on a kids day rather then having kids running about the Radcliffe. My pet hate people that bring their kids in the boozer awards do or not.

Exactly

A series of events to cater for all types of supporter, price points etc

As per your point and mine earlier - Leave the original last game awards do as is because all fans ( adults Kids families, loners!! etc) can go and it covers all income groups because it is free. Then make any other event (s) an add on where you will get different groups e.g adults only & cater for different pockets ( perhaps have some at 2- 30 quid and the odd one at 65)

Golden rule of business - Look after your existing/loyal customers base first before "branching out". The 65 quid only option does not seem to be doing this

Some good posts about income streams. If it's a matter of trying to maximise income that's not a bad thing in itself, but the income would be greater if the event was held at the COA, so it can't just be about that

The underlying issue seems to be one of excluding people. And that's the thing about people who aren't part of the black tie brigade, they can sometimes ask awkward questions. Some might say, naff questions

I think having a adults only and business focused and 'posh' end of season do is a good idea. But for the life of my why can't they do the regular awards party for the plebs and then do some sort of "season review" at the town hall. Get directors, staff and players to do speeches. Auction some stuff, Have some corporate awards where their bosses can make a speech and give an award away, then get Jeffery Stelling on before pumpkins at midnight. Lots of people here have suggested something like this, so it's not rocket science.

I personally have no issue with the club looking to 'improve' the quality of the awards night. As somebody who was behind the event at Nemesis (I've never been as ill as I was the morning after that night and blame Steve Parkin 100%), I can see the club's line of thinking in wanting to go to the next level but by announcing this event, they have just highlighted how out of touch they are with the fan on the terraces.

By all means try and jazz it up a little, but the key issues are:

1) Price Point - Frankly ridiculous! The meal and formal event I approve of, however needless expenses has led to the cost being what it is.
2) Excluding Kids - I have a 7 and 9 year-old who are season-ticket holders. I fight tooth and nail to stop them wanting to support 'bigger' clubs and as any father will tell you, that is bl00dy difficult. We've been to the end of season event for the last 3 years and the kids love meeting the players and feeling part of the club. This helps in my quest for them to be 100% Dale, so what is the benefit of excluding the club's future supporters?

In what has been a very testing season all round, we somehow manage to score own goal after own goal. To consult The Trust and then just completely disregard what they fed back, is astonishingly poor. I would be astounded if the event went ahead in its new revamped format. I'd expect 'we've listened to the fans etc' before the end of March but we all know they haven't listened to the fans otherwise they wouldn't be plugging an event at £65 a head!
